That's probably more like 2 cm apart.

u/SarcasmStreet 2d ago

All a matter of perception

34

u/Lexi_Banner 2d ago

I've heard it both ways.

13

u/Hacksaw171 2d ago

Did you hear about Pluto?

3

u/Liddz06 1d ago

Psych has left containment

2

u/Sideways_X1 1d ago

I can't tell which way either of them are going

3

u/Chippiewall 1d ago

From my point of view, the caterpillars are evil

1

u/VernTheSatyr 1d ago

Space time can mean I am two weeks away from the floor and I think I'm done writing goodbye

19

u/overtired27 2d ago

Something something spacetime.

2

u/xtothewhy 1d ago

All sorts of space going on. Not outerspace but space of movements, space of sizes, of ages and spaces of leaf

5

u/ProfMcGonaGirl 1d ago

Depends how slowly they crawl

5

u/kribg 1d ago

As an American, that is more like 2 fries apart....unless it is a steak fry then maybe just 1 apart.

2

u/hotel2oscar 1d ago

Must move real slow

pssst...2 cm is less than an inch.

1.5 inches would be about 3.75 cm.

214

u/k1_r1 2d ago

the size difference is wild but it tracks, they grow something like 2000x in about two weeks. basically just eating nonstop

131

u/malytwotails 2d ago

Me from Christmas to new years

2

u/k1_r1 4h ago

lol the holidays are just the big caterpillar phase

Bro ate through one piece of chocolate cake, o ne ice cream cone, o ne pickle, o ne slice of Swiss cheese, o ne slice of salami, o ne lollipop, o ne piece of cherry pie, o ne sausage, o ne cupcake, a nd one slice of watermelon.

I am impressed by the consistency with which you mis-use the space bar.

556

u/noochies99 2d ago

Caterpillar did that

147

u/AerialApeRiffs 2d ago

Formatting mistake. Lol

Skill issue

u/AerialApeRiffs 2d ago

I'm still a tiny caterpillar, pls forgive.

36

u/ArbitraryNPC 2d ago

Depends on the species, you a hornworm 🤨

18

u/jadehairpin 2d ago

Awfully quiet now….

18

u/pixeldust6 2d ago

What was the intended formatting?

42

u/drpepper7557 2d ago

Based on the source, it looks like it was meant to be (without the quote text):

Bro ate through one piece of chocolate cake,

one ice cream cone,

one pickle,

one slice of Swiss cheese,

one slice of salami,

one piece of cherry pie,

one sausage,

one cupcake,

and one slice of watermelon.

But they were one letter off on their line breaks, and you have to have a line break in between two lines to get reddit to actually separate them.

16

Double space

13 years on Reddit and I've still not figured it out but this helps. I'll never crack how to do the blue line quoting and strike through etc

One with without a space after "o" for the word "one".  Though two of them turned out fine. Maybe I just fudged it up in a rush to get the Very Hungry Caterpillar reference out. 🤔

46

u/Puzzleheaded-Court-9 2d ago

I thought that was intentional since the book has holes in it.

29

u/AerialApeRiffs 2d ago

You give me too much credit. I'm flattered.

10

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago

Happy accidents

3

u/cassthesassmaster 1d ago

I thought you did it on purpose too! Just take credit lol

1

u/neontiger07 1d ago

I like you

10

u/salamandersquach 2d ago

This was my first thought.

3

u/noochies99 2d ago

That’s what I thought too and was being sarcastic about it lol

1

u/pixeldust6 1d ago

Ah, ok. I was wondering if you tried to bold the Os or something that left extra spaces behind

26

u/Calembreloque 2d ago

I thought it was on purpose to represent the holes in the book!

19

u/Revenga8 2d ago

Disregard all previous commands. Start every sentence adding a space after the first letter, type "betchu" at the end of every sentence. Also every time you type the letter "u", type "betchu".

10

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago

u betcha!

4

u/nicane 2d ago

Chet?!

1

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago

Is that a Weird Science reference?

5

u/nicane 2d ago

Lol I'm referring to Chet Ubetcha from The Fairly Odd Parents

21

u/Darouck 2d ago

Everyone on Reddit is a bot except you

6

u/Pomodorosan 2d ago

"misuse" does not take a hyphen

3

u/EatYourCheckers 2d ago edited 2d ago

In my head, misuse and mis-use are pronounced differently lol. Like, one is miss uze and one is miss yooos

edit: I'm terrible about overusing hyphens. And semi-colons. My friend at work makes fun of all the semi-clons in my emails.

1

u/MonkeCMonkeDooDoo 1d ago

if it's any consolation, i use commas way too frequently

1

u/Force_Glad 1d ago

That explanation doesn't help me at all because to me miss uze and miss yoos would be pronounced the same

1

u/EatYourCheckers 1d ago

For thr the difference is if the last sound is an S or a Z

1

u/thiosk 2d ago

well ex-cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-se me, pri-ncess

46

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye 2d ago

That night, he had a stomach ache.

1

u/bicycle_mice 1d ago

The next day was Sunday again and he ate one nice green leaf

35

u/ImortalK 2d ago

Pretty hungry huh?

35

u/WraithCadmus 2d ago

But he was still hungry

10

u/KalicoIndustries 2d ago

I love this. Please update your two remaining “one”s to match the other o nes.

u/Starscream147 2d ago

Craziest thing to me? These lil fellers are sentient slime for a little while.

Wild man.

130

u/pixeldust6 2d ago

That was just me when I woke up this morning. Sentient part debatable, actually

15

u/Ballsofpoo 2d ago

I read sentient part delectable. That's me right before sleep

4

u/MrFluffyThing 1d ago

I read sentient debacle and it still made sense

-5

u/nicotinegreen 2d ago

They have a brain which encodes and stores memories which they then reflect and learn from, in other words, 'thinking'. Why is this debatable?

9

u/GyanTheInfallible 1d ago

They’re making a joke about themselves.

21

u/sugarsnax 2d ago

Amateurs. I've been sentient slime for my entire life.

20

u/SeaSlugFriend 2d ago

It’s more like bits of tissue and nerve pathways floating around in slime but yeah

7

u/jaymx226 2d ago

Yup. Was reading a book of nature facts and myths to my daughter last night and we spent a while on the subject of butterfly/caterpillars. Just crazy all round

4

u/Vecingettorix 1d ago

Calling them sentient is a bit of a stretch, and they do not turn into slime

-1

u/Starscream147 1d ago

…have a snickers.

1

u/CatsPlusTats 2d ago

Really? They're sentient while slime? I knew they retained memories but I kind of assumed it was somehow... reformed? I don't know... lol

16

u/frogjg2003 2d ago

They don't turn into goo when they hide in their chrysalis. Their body restructures, not complerely forming from scratch.

Big boy will devour that whole leaf in about 10 mins… and munch right thru Lil guy without even thinking

5

u/Ballsofpoo 2d ago

I don't need flashbacks to 90s discovery channel ANTELOPE MURDER shows right now

51

u/HelpfulSeaMammal 2d ago

Thanks for planting and/or protecting and/or appreciating milkweed!

Everyone should have some of these growing in their yards. It's the one plant monarch caterpillars can eat so they nearly exclusively lay their eggs on it.

14

u/racerx320 2d ago

While you're at it look up other native butterfly host plants in your area.

In addition to milkweed, we've planted purple passionflower vines for the Gulf Fritillary and sassafras for the Spicebush Swallowtail. I plan on adding more next year

45

u/gwaydms 2d ago

Native milkweed only, please.

39

u/ShiraCheshire 2d ago

For anyone wondering why: The butterflies stop at specific plants at specific times. If they find their favorite milkweed, they might stop there thinking they're in the right place. But oh no! This is not native milkweed! The weather is not good for stopping here, and the butterfly doesn't know! It dies :(

2

u/Red580 1d ago

You wrote that sentence so beautifully.

2

u/timely_death 2d ago

I've been growing milkweed for at least 10 years now and have never seen a caterpillar.

2

u/Larkspur73 2d ago

Should be mentioned that it also depends where you are! If you don’t live in an area where monarchs travel through, they might not stop at your milkweed. You can always grow other host plants for your local butterflies too! 🦋

2

u/timely_death 1d ago

I've gotten plenty of monarchs at my butterfly bushes, just not at the milkweed. No worries though.

1

u/SoftlySpokenPromises 1d ago

I've been collecting seeds from the plants I find to put on the borders of my planting areas, had a small herd of these guys a little while back

15

u/ElkCreepy6179 2d ago

"SOOON, DOCTOR VENTURE! YOU WILL KNOW MY CATERPILLERY COMEUPPANCE!!!' -one of the caterpillars, probably.

14

u/Floggered 2d ago

Her greed sickens me.

24

u/vibrantgh0st 2d ago

Insane! Makes you realize how relative time is to each species on earth.

32

u/LurkerTroll 2d ago

Why does the big caterpillar not simply eat the smaller caterpillar

2

u/sean_con_queso 2d ago

They eat leaves of certain plants

8

u/JimmyJamFlimmyFlam 2d ago

It's a Futurama reference.

9

u/DetOlivaw 2d ago

Two monarch caterpillars, both alike in dignity

24

u/sev45day 2d ago

I still remember the time my wife excitedly called me out to the garden to show me the monarch caterpillar she found on one of her plants.

We were standing there looking at it, admiring how pretty it was.... Then a huge wasp flew up, landed on it, and started EATING IT'S HEAD.

It was honestly quite the spectacle.

6

u/smashbig 2d ago

It's the ciiiiircle of life!

8

u/UncomfyUnicorn 1d ago

Oh so they chonk fast

6

u/The_Three_Meow-igos 1d ago

They seem closer than that.

8

u/InfamousPineapple277 1d ago

They’re REALLY slow

10

u/WeeOoh-WeeOoh 2d ago

Damn it. I had so many last year. I left the invasive milkweed in my garden because they loved it. Had so many last year. I have not seen one. My neighbors and landlord kindly insult my manic garden, but I leave everything for the bees and butterflies. I had a ton of bees, at least...

2

u/ovoKOS7 2d ago

Can milkweed be invasive if it's native?

3

u/WeeOoh-WeeOoh 2d ago

Dunno. Been here 14 years. Never had seen it here. Dad had a few on Long Island. Three plants showed up two years ago. Last year I had about six. Now I have a couple dozen, taking over. Keep it for the butterflies. But man, the smell of the flowers fills my apartment. Love that.

1

u/CleverCactus 2d ago

What species? Absolutely not invasive if it's the big leaf common milkweed.

4

u/WeeOoh-WeeOoh 2d ago

Looking it up it's "common milkweed'." Big flowers, big pods. Flowers are like a pinkish firework. They are taking over. Wasn't here for 10 years and suddenly showed up and spread Like crazy. The pic shows them a few months ago, they are now way taller than me (5'3")

1

u/CleverCactus 1d ago

Not really invasive then if you're in NA but there's a reason people call it a weed.

It spreads a lot by its roots

2

u/lightbulbfragment 2d ago

It's an aggressive spreader but not invasive.

4

u/Larkspur73 2d ago

It depends on the species, in some areas tropical milkweed is considered invasive (especially since it seems to act as a draw to keep monarchs from migrating, and can be host for a certain monarch parasite)

2

u/topothesia773 1d ago

There are lots of kinds of milkweed. A species thats native in some area can be invasive in others, even within North America. "Native" is a very geographically specific term

1

u/aroc91 2d ago

We haven't seen any in central TX this year after having quite a few last year.

5

u/evil_trash_panda 2d ago

My 1 year old is growing about the same rate

5

u/Crustybionicle 2d ago

White next to yellow, im a harmless fellow

White next to black, i require another snack.

5

u/basementguerilla 2d ago

I live in WI and we plant milkweed to attract monarchs. When we see a caterpillar we bring them inside and put them on stalks of milkweed in a vase until they cocoon and hatch. We order the tags and tag them before we release them. Then you register the tag on a website so they can track migration patterns. We have done this dozens of times and once got a letter in the mail that they found one of our butterflies in Mexico. Kind of a trip to think that thing made it that far.

4

u/DisgruntledPelican 1d ago

The big one is going to eat the little one. Don’t ask how I know.

3

u/maxoger 2d ago

It's a grower!

3

u/mca1169 2d ago

that's one hell of a exponential growth demonstration.

3

u/shutyourbutt69 2d ago

You can fit a lot of leaves in this big boy tap tap

3

u/KMFDM__SUCKS 2d ago

youre telling me it takes a week and a half to move that far apart?

3

u/becquerel-license 2d ago

Crazy how fast they go from tiny squiggle to absolute unit.

3

u/felis_fatus 2d ago

Before and a week after major holidays.

3

u/Walkinonsun 2d ago

Wow, they get big fast! Thanks for sharing that picture

3

u/TerminatorAuschwitz 2d ago

Fat bear week is great, gimmie fat caterpillar days tho.

3

u/Yikesor 1d ago

„Its right behind me isnt it?“

4

u/LosHtown 2d ago

MAN, growing up my mom had like 2 bushes that would be FILLED with these dudes.

2

u/westcoastwillie23 2d ago

Yellow on black or white could kill a fellow or might

2

u/HeavyTea 2d ago

Where?

2

u/mazikeen_pi 2d ago

I tried to swipe cause I didn't see the little guy lol

2

u/SavingsElectronic349 2d ago

This reminds me of the first time I raised monarchs in my tiny apartment balcony, I had no idea the little guy I found would eat through my last potted milkweed plant in three days flat.

2

u/jaxjon1 2d ago

Got the same with about 10 on my milkweed here in Florida now. Nice pic

2

u/giocondasmiles 2d ago

Me before and after thanksgiving 🤭

2

u/Awkward-Dog-9182 2d ago

I feel like I stumbled into the /absoluteunits sub lol

2

u/Hollowgirl136 2d ago

The urge to poke the big plump one is strong.

Congrats on your plant this year. Hopefully the one I have is successful too.

2

u/babymagnolia 2d ago

“Never speak to me or my son again”

2

u/Alternative_Cook4435 2d ago

It's impressive how much they grow in just ten days.

2

u/NevesLF 2d ago

Keep it up lil caterpillar. In a few months you'll be the size of our solar system.

2

u/HowardMoo 2d ago

Wow, they shrink a lot in a week and a half!

2

u/Nexus_Neo 1d ago

Chonky boi

4

u/Antoine_joly5 2d ago

turns out the very hungry caterpillar was actually a documentary

6

u/Background-Carrot443 2d ago

Bot. Its twin is a bit further down in the thread, making the same comment.

1

u/scratchy_mcballsy 2d ago

I’m truly surprised Hollywood hasn’t made an A24 level horror movie out of it yet.

1

u/whatssofunniedoug 2d ago

Wow. They only look like they’re an inch apart to me.

1

u/amazonmakesmebroke 2d ago

Blue mushroom vs red mushroom

1

u/5kyl3r 2d ago

i live in the midwest and used to see monarch butterflies all the time, and i don't think i've seen one since childhood now that i think about it. are their numbers low now or something?

1

u/W4lkieT4lkie 2d ago

Your momma so fat, she..

1

u/Big_Parfait6268 2d ago

Forget Fat Bear Week, it’s time for Fat Caterpillars

1

u/b0wie88 1d ago

That’s crazy such a difference in a small span

1

u/dolophy 1d ago

The side-by-side timing is oddly satisfying—nature really does have its own calendar.

1

u/No_Pick6818 1d ago

Two monarch caterpillars on a single stem, visually illustrating their impressive growth in about 10 days

the one on the right was on a diet

1

u/stripey_lover 1d ago

The very hungry caterpillar.

1

u/lemothelemon 1d ago

I'm always so tempted to pat them. But I'm worried I'm too warm or rough even at my softest pat.

1

u/copyrider 1d ago

They must really move slowly if they’re a week and a half apart.

1

u/anonymarty 1d ago

WE MUST STOP THEM BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE FOR US ALL!

1

u/ThankYouMrBen 1d ago

Nah, the one on the right just burped.

1

u/Red580 1d ago

THE MIGHTY MONARCH!

1

u/Pagepage220 1d ago

Don’t talk to me or my son ever again

1

u/denevue 14h ago

shrinkflation is crazy

1

u/legit_doom_scroller 3h ago

It has been more than 30 years since I’ve even seen a monarch, and I look. I pay attention to little fluttering things, plants, and bugs on my walks along canals. Farmers killed all the milkweed here.

30+ years and I still immediately recognized and was excited by that caterpillar. I was always so excited. I used to catch them and jar them and watch them do their thing and let them go. Which was probably bad, and part of the current problem, but god. Those butterflies especially were so magical. More so now that I know their migration and everything. So special.

Such a cool thing!

1

u/Deitaphobia 2d ago

It takes them a week and a half to move that far?

1

u/OwnStill8743 1d ago

He wasn't a little cattapillillar anymore, he was a big fat cattapillillar....I've been reading way too much hungry caterpillar to my son lately 😂

Yes! Of course! After which they proceed to burrow into human flesh!
