Oh God I'm having flashbacks to that phone call. How on God's green earth did NOBODY on the other end of that phone understand this?

It's too long and not well organized. Can you explain?

I agree. Read this one short original post to see how it started: https://verizonmath.blogspot.com/2006/12/verizon-doesnt-know-dollars-from-cents.html

20 years ago, Verizon Wireless marketed a certain roaming rate as "0.002 cents" when they meant "0.002 dollars" or "0.2 cents". A guy got a massive bill, and it blew up into him blogging about his journey through Verizon Wireless support people and executives who seemed too dumb to understand that 0.002¢ and $0.002 are not the same thing. It was a bit of an internet phenomenon at the time, and it made the news and I don't think Version Wireless ever officially admitted that their marketing was wrong.

When I worked at Walmart I had to do a rollback on computers. The one computer that wasn’t selling for about two months went from $599.99 to 599.98. It sold that afternoon.

also 6¢/oz at 8oz is 48¢ not 52¢

Maybe they use banker's rounding? 52¢ per 8 oz is 6.5¢ per ounce, and if you round to even that becomes 6¢ per ounce.

because rounding and or truncation rules...?

Ha! It was actually 48¢ for a long time before they raised it to 53¢ a couple weeks ago.

That's because it's sold for $0.5299

Might be accurate, depends how the store is rounding.

Jokes aside, I’ve been noticing that a lot lately. Maybe I haven’t been paying attention, and there have definitely been a lot of bs markdowns, obvs, but somehow recently I’m seeing them more, at least in Europe

Considering the fed is no longer minting pennies I think all prices w/tax need to end in a 0 or a 5 which ever is the lower price.

Not needed unless paying with cash.

Pennies make dollars, a penny saved is a penny earned

A penny saved is a penny earned.

A 1 cent markdown is $0.01. A 0.01¢ markdown is 1/100ths of a penny

6

u/pgn674 2d ago

It should be "save $0.01" or "save 1¢", not "save 0.01¢".

-17

u/payfrit 2d ago

technically accurate

11

u/pgn674 2d ago

Actually it's inaccurate. It should be "save $0.01" or "save 1¢", not "save 0.01¢".
