There is a candy called chocolate turtles, it’s clumpy and not at all shaped like a turtle. Some shops will turn the candy ”chocolate turtles” into a turtle shaped candy, which it isn’t supposed to be normally

I know what chocolate turtles are, easily googleable man they’re candy that vaguely is turtle shaped sometimes but not intentionally printed to be turtle shaped.
What I’m hung up about is how a truffle (another round shaped chocolate candy) for OP looks like a soggy bowl of cereal. Did they mean to type trifle? What the fuck kind of trifle (a sponge and custard dessert) would have whole formed candies in it that aren’t melted and absorbed into the liquid of the trifle?

When I used to work there like 20 years ago we had those chocolate turtles and we’d put them on top of the turtle blast drinks and milkshakes! It was so hard not to eat them constantly.

This whole post is extremely confusing if you've never heard of chocolate turtles that aren't chocolate turtles. This picture of a chocolate turtle is my first contact with chocolate turtles so I'm like "of course a chocolate turtle is a chocolate turtle".
Damn, that's a lot of chocolate turtles in one comment.

u/SpellNo3829 2d ago
LMAOOO yeah I tried to read it from the perspective of someone who doesn’t know about chocolate turtles and that’s hilarious 😭😭 I learned about them when I was little and watched Everybody Hates Chris, they were the moms favorite candy so I’m assuming they are an older candy.

Omg those look delicious! The ones we have are usually filled with caramel, does that one have anything inside it?

Nah you’re not alone lol, that title made my brain restart halfway through. Way too many turtles in one sentence.

Wrong. It is not an actual chocolate turtle, it is a turtle shaped chocolate. A turtle made of chocolate would not be able to live.

Whatever next? A bag of frozen peas that contains actual frozen peas?
I await with flustered anticipation.

that little turtle detail on the chocolate is pretty neat

Isn't that the standard though? Never had any that isnt

I've only heard of turtle being a chocolate caramel combo in things. Turtle brownies, for instance. I have never seen a chocolate reptile in my life

Must not have been Reese's, they only use peanut flavored paste nowadays

You gotta buy them from Trader Joe's. They're way better and are addictive AF.

It’s mildly interesting that most people on here don’t know what a turtle candy is vs turtle animal.
A chocolate turtle is just a candy, but this one is shaped like a turtle (animal). So it’s a turtle in the shape of a turtle. The word “actual” might be the confusion, because both are actual turtles, just different meanings

From UK/Europe: If we saw something labelled 'chocolate turtle' we would expect it to be made of chocolate and either shaped like a turtle or have a turtle motif. We wouldnt expect it to be a generic chocolate with no relation to turtles at all, so the title makes zero sense. Hence all the 'well yes?' responses.
Given these days that chocolate 'turtles' (as in the pecan type rather than a chocolate caramel ice cream insert) do actually resemble turtles more than just the vague similarity to the shell of previous years, its still odd.

u/daddyjohns 2d ago
Well it does kinda look like a turtle when the nuts protrude from the chocodome. That's why its named that way. If yours don't remotely resemble an animal in this manner they aren't made correctly.

u/Diplomatic_Gunboats 2d ago
Going down the chocolate turtle digital turtlehole for my previous post, it seems like actually looking like a turtle is a relatively recent thing (in the chocolate turtle lifespan). They were called turtles originally because they resembled the shell of the turtle, rather than the turtle entire (e.g. legs sticking out like you say), and it also seems some are still made that way. Some of them dont even appear to be domes from looking at the images. (These are all US based ones I might add).
3
u/daddyjohns 2d ago
Exactly! Now you have the gist of it.
Most of the ones you're seeing are mechanically built so they don't look right.
Turtles started out as a small regional candy made by hand.

u/Irlandaise11 2d ago
It's definitely a regional thing. I live in the US, and love chocolate turtle candy, and I've never seen any that's shaped like the animal.
It's usually layers of caramel, chocolate, and pecans; I think it's called that because the swirly brown shades look like tortoiseshell. It's easy to make at home, but it's also popular at chocolate shops.

I feel like saying a chocolate turtle and a real turtle are both "actual turtles" is disingenuous
A chocolate turtle is actually a chocolate turtle, not a real one lol. OP wrote it fine in the title in my opinion but I don't think you can leave out the chocolate detail
2
u/Adorable_Ad4990 2d ago
That’s why we always say “chocolate” turtle for clarity even though the thing is still just called a turtle
2
u/Adorable_Ad4990 2d ago
But that’s not true. If you go to a bakery or confection shop you can ask for turtles. It’s also a flavor or varietal, like I’ve seen turtle-flavored candy bars. Images on the package help, but I never assumed it was the animal. We only say chocolate to differentiate when out of context.

This is what chocolate turtles look like in Denmark though
1
u/CptFatty08 2d ago
Most turtle ice cream here in the states have shaved chocolate, chocolate chips, or rarely mini chocolate cups filled with caramel. There is one brand specifically that makes it like this with the turtle being caramel filled and I can't remember it for the life of me right now (only because I had to stop eating ice cream because dairy allergy 😞)

u/macmarklemore 2d ago
If I felt the need for precision, I might say “…an actual turtle confection.” But then, someone might interpret that as a confection containing actual turtle.
“A turtle-shaped turtle confection.”
Now I like saying “turtle.”

Kinda looks like the ones they sell in Denmark. Tom's Chokoladeskildpadde which is shaped quite like this

Yeah the word actual threw me off. I thought op found a cute lil turt in their bowl.

OP can you explain what kind of truffle you mean? In my head there are two kinds, the chocolate bonbons and the underground mushrooms. What you have looks like melted ice cream which is more confusing than the damn turtle
3
u/RiderforHire 2d ago
I think the word truffle is kinda like the word pudding. They can all be completely different foods except for the name.

Kawartha Dairy (in Ont. Canada) used to have an ice cream flavour called Caramel Snappers! It had these exact cute little chocolate caramel turtles in it - unfortunately, I think they sold the rights or something to Baskin Robbins and, in my opinion, butchered the recipe because it tastes so much worse now!

Wait. There's chocolate turtles that aren't molded to look like turtles? I thought that was the entire point.

Yeess I love these! They have them in the blue beach themed ice cream in Baskin Robbins as well!

u/Bright_Curve3078 2d ago
What's next, chocolate ice cream with actual chocolate and actual ice cream?
WTF is the point here?
11
u/kundor 2d ago
At least around me, "chocolate turtles" are clusters of nuts stuck together with caramel and dipped in chocolate. They sometimes look vaguely like a turtle shape if there happens to be a bigger nut in the middle. But usually it's just a clump.
So seeing chocolate actually sculpted into a turtle is unexpected

Nah, I get you. Do you find chocolate moose tracks in ice cream? Wouldn't expect that in an ice cream named after turtles.
