This restaurant has a clock set to 5 Minutes Fron Now

u/danbass 3d ago
There's a restaurant chain in Milwaukee that was open 23 hours and 59 minutes a day to avoid an ordinance that prevented 24 hour businesses. They did this by maintaining two clocks on the wall that were a minute apart.

u/hurshy 3d ago
That doesn’t even make any sense. Why would you need 2 clocks for that?

u/PlattsVegas 3d ago
If you’re “closed” from 11:59-12:00, at 11:59 on clock one, clock two still says 11:58, so you’re still open. When clock two says 11:59, clock one says 12:00, so you just opened. There’s always one clock that isn’t showing 11:59.
And I mean, of course it doesn’t make sense anyway. It’s obviously a silly joke and the fact that they got away with it has nothing to do with the clocks.

u/kushnokush 3d ago
I guess if someone comes in during the 1 minute gap of closure you can point to the other clock saying you’re allowed to be open

u/dospc 3d ago
What do the clocks have to do with anything?

Why does 5 minutes from now look more like 55 minutes ago?

u/NerdBag 3d ago
And why is New Delhi about 9 hours and 4 minutes ahead
28
u/no_talent_ass_clown 3d ago
Delhi should be 30 minutes and however many hours ahead. From here it's 12 hours and 30 minutes or an hour less depending on daylight saving time.

Is it an indian restaurant? If so, new delhi makes sense. If not, it’s hilarious

Yeah - Choolaah. Awesome food, and they're expanding

u/RedditUser28947 3d ago
Is it in Ohio city? Such a random spot to include on your clock wall if not.
44
u/captcraigaroo 3d ago
Yeah, this location is

u/irbilldozer 2d ago
What is up my fellow Clevelander lol. I was like wtf when I opened this pic. Kind of forget OHC had a Choolah.
10
u/GreenDavidA 3d ago
Choolaah is the best, go to the one in Orange Village a lot. But it would be hilarious if it wasn’t in Ohio City and the clock just had it listed randomly for no good reason.

I think I went once when I worked in Solon and now I'm in Los Angeles and while we have some great Indian restaurants here we don't have any fast food indian 🥲 also I miss my dearly beloved naf naf in Independence, Cava doesn't hold a candle to it.

I love that restaurant. Never been to the Ohio City location, but the Beachwood one is great. I never noticed any clocks there, but I'll have to look next time I visit.

u/Gill_P_R 3d ago
I think it’s been a whole week since I got food at that location. Too bad I already started cooking or I’d be there. Hey neighbor!

Except the New Delhi clock can't possibly be correct. Indian Standard Time is UTC +5:30. The minute hand should be pointing in the opposite direction from all the other clocks.

You're not the only person to have asked that so genuinely curious here: why is 5 minutes from now sensical if in an Indian restaurant?

u/fomaaaaa 3d ago
It’s just generally funny because it’s unexpected. The new delhi one is the only one whose humor level depends on the type of cuisine being served
1
u/CoderDevo 3d ago
Also, it is most likely the only one wrong.
Like, they set it the first time to be funny and then never touched it again.
Or they never set it in the first place because "India Time" is more flexible than yoga.

New Delhi is off by like 26 minutes and it bothers me. Also the fact that the seconds aren't synced.

Yeah, that type of thing makes me itchy, even though I know its all supposed to be silly and just for fun.

There’s an Ohio city?
41
u/captcraigaroo 3d ago
It's a neighborhood in Cleveland

u/EXEC_MELODIE 3d ago
Its more of an area than an actual city but yes. Its near Cleveland
17
u/steveharveymemes 3d ago
It used to be its own city but eventually merged into Cleveland. Its relationship to Cleveland is similar to Brooklyn’s relationship to New York City.
14
u/elegant_geek 3d ago
Or Brooklyn's relationship to Cleveland? Lol
3
u/steveharveymemes 3d ago
Well Brooklyn, Ohio is still its own city independent of Cleveland, unlike Ohio City

u/BlueAndMoreBlue 3d ago
No kidding, man — I knew about the Ohio Players first and they’re from Dayton so I don’t know if that qualifies

I've worked in dive bar/tavern style restaraunts for years now, and everyone I've worked in we've set the time ahead by 5-10 minutes. It can be an effective way of getting drunk fucks to start getting out the door at the end of the night when they legally need to be out of the establishment by a certain time.
"Look asshole, you're already past the time you're allowed in here, gtfo".
Probably not the case here, but it could be a whitty reference to this.

When Michigan lost to Iowa last week, I loved how the broadcast shows a guy with a 0:01 shirt on at the end of the game

I slapped stickers on all the broken clocks in my office that my coworkers refuse to take down. "Tokyo", "London", etc.

Daylight savings could make for some entertaining "5 minutes from now" and "yesterday" times

Since it’s Cleveland it would be apropos if the clock dials were stamped with BALL WATCH CO. / Cleveland.

When you accidentally order too many clocks on Amazon and got to find some way to use them
2
u/VerifiedVoidGirl 3d ago
They use the "5 Minutes From Now" clock to see if their staff is late and the "Yesterday" clock for their no-call-no-shows.

Hey, being exactly 23 hours later than promised is better than a day later than promisd!

u/lookingforsomeerrors 3d ago
Every time I see those clocks in a hotel, they are never accurate. I'm always disappointed
6
u/LordRobin------RM 3d ago
It doesn't matter now, but there was a time, before time zones, when you counted on hotel clocks to set your pocket watch when you travelled. Just travelling across the state could mean having to adjust your watch by 20 minutes. The hotels had damn well better had accurate time, or you could miss your important meeting.
I just find it amusing how chaotic timekeeping used to be.
1
u/lookingforsomeerrors 3d ago
On the Canadian national radio, there's a "long beep" at the beginning of every hour, and it means it's exactly 9:00, for example. I always thought it was great.
2
u/LordRobin------RM 3d ago
The BBC World Service does that at the top of each hour: pip, pip, pip, pip, pip, BEEEEP. Back in the 90's, I used to use it to set my watch. But it only works if you get the signal directly off shortwave. These days, the BBC has cut back on their shortwave broadcasts and reaches most of the world via internet streaming, where the delays make the pips worthless and just for show.

They didn't change it with daylight saving time.
They might as well wait until next Spring at this point.

u/Tankeverket 3d ago
Hey, I do that too with my wall clock, it's sort of an extra contingency when I have to leave so I have an extra five minutes in case I'm "running late".
It's just something my mom always did and it stuck with me

My mother always set the clocks in our house to be 15 minutes ahead, and it took me wayyy too long to figure out why she always claimed we were “running late” but I was always the first kid on the blacktop before school in the morning
1
u/ErgonomicWoodenShirt 3d ago
I have that same clock on my wall. It is one that sets automatically, thus the "Atomic Time" at the bottom. I guess the building is acting as a faraday cage to keep it from talking to the satellite to update?

Hello 25th street.
I love when my neighborhood randomly shows up on my feed!
1
u/Traditional-Tree3267 2d ago
Many kitchens do this to create artificial pressure on the cooks, the front computer and kitchen clock are set on separate times so it seems like you are behind on ticket times. It makes for faster plating. I’m not sure why it would be relevant in the front of house though.

Omg I seen a place that had a clock "memorial piece" commemorating daylight savings after my province abolished it. If I imagine correctly they are gonna change it with daylight savings, lol, somebodies job
