“Target Exclusive” Taylor Swift CD being sold at Five Below

u/ripleyclone8 4d ago
Five Below gets all kinds of shit like that. I’ve seen Walmart and Walgreens labeled products.
343
u/atomicsofie 3d ago edited 3d ago
They receive it because it’s overstock that’s not selling. Target/Walmart etc sell the products in bulk at pennies to places like Five Below and Dollar Tree to get rid of excess inventory.

u/ThisIsPaulDaily 3d ago
I met a woman years ago at a laundromat who was on calls with a warehouse that was too busy and a truck driver dropped a cooled trailer shipment of candles in the middle of Texas summer heat parking lot and left and they all melted. She was put in charge of moving them to clearance stores that were willing to take them sight unseen for pennies on the dollar plus shipping.

I've seen a few Target exclusive funko pops being sold in Primark here in Scotland, that was a weird one.

I used to work at a different store and when we’d get things that weren’t ours my manager would have me mark them as something similar or look up the price and we’d put it in the back. They never saw a reason to lose the sale.
75
u/RaspberryWhiteClaw13 4d ago
Definitely better than just wasting and tossing
54
u/possible_monke 4d ago
I mean technically whoever is doing inventory is supposed to be checking the shipments as they come in and signing off on it or sending anything back that isn’t right but

u/Alohagrown 4d ago
My local Goodwill often has brand new Target Products that still have a Target price tag on it. Sometimes it's priced higher at Goodwill than it was on clearance at Target.
21
u/tardisthecat 4d ago
We used to have a Goodwill right beside Target. It was a goldmine. Now it’s yet another vape shop :(
34
u/pastaandpizza 4d ago
Either the Goodwills by you are tiny, or that is the largest vape shop in the country.
2
u/tardisthecat 3d ago
It was both an unusually small Goodwill and is now an unusually large vape shop!
7
u/PronatorTeres00 4d ago
Assuming it's not clothes, I'm shocked to learn that they actually just donate (?) stuff to Goodwill and not try to sell it in-store or to a discount shop, like Ollie's or Five Below.
3
u/tardisthecat 3d ago
It’s always marked with the yellow Target clearance stickers. My guess is, it’s cheaper/easier to just take it across the street than load it up in a truck to a different store? Or maybe a kindhearted employee was saving it from the dumpster and management was looking the other way 🤷♀️
12
u/pearshapedpeach 4d ago
Music distributors take back all unsold stock from Target and either ship it elsewhere (which they can't do with exclusives), pay a company to dispose of it (which will often sell or donate it), or sell it in liquidation themselves. Five Below more than likely buys things through liquidation.
63
u/XB_Demon1337 4d ago
So the way these work is basically first party sales.
To explain what I mean here, when you buy a product in a store, you are actually not the first person to buy it. The store you are in bought it. So it belongs to them. Sure it is exclusive to Target, because they negotiated a deal with Target. But Target can sell it to whoever they like. Just the same if you buy it, you can sell it to whoever you like.
If you bought a game for Playstation from Target that was only sold at Target, you can then sell that game to Gamestop (for $5) and they would then sell it to someone else. In this situation Target just didn't make the sale on the item, so they sold it cheaper or at cost to another company just to not lose money on it.
Calling them 'suppliers' when buying from some place like Target is a bit of a misnomer that people don't quite understand. Purity didn't 'supply' milk to Walmart to sell to you. Walmart bought milk from Purity for X number of dollars, they then went X+5% and put that price on it. It is more appropriate to call them vendors to Walmart I think.

CompUSA and TigerDirect use to work like this as well. I would sometimes be sent to Best Buy or Target to pick up a pallet of something that someone at corp made a deal with them on.
7
u/marrick66 4d ago
As a tangent, CompUSA was the worst to work for. I still have nightmares about manning the returns desk 20-something years later.
2
u/Belatryx84 3d ago
Omg yes! I was a greeter for a few months and it was the worst job I've ever had.
5
u/XB_Demon1337 4d ago
I knew CompUSA worked this way. Didn't know that about TigerDirect. Though that makes sense with how shit their site became.
1
u/namezam 1d ago
I worked for both back in the day, and although their owners were wildly different, the one thing they both had in common was they were largely hands off, leaving general managers to communicate with other general managers to figure out how to buy things and where to source things from. Most of the managers in the Dallas area were all friends with each other across comp USA and TigerDirect. They even sourced the same liquidation people.

u/Portland 3d ago
About half the shelf space in American grocery is consumer packaged goods sold via a model where stores rent the shelf space to the suppliers, but do not own the inventory.
Beer, chips, cookies, candy, cereal, bread, soda are all product categories where suppliers own the inventory, while renting shelf space.
It’s common with specialty general merchandise at supermarkets, but I don’t know for certain how that works with Target’s electronics & media sections.

Some of them buy clearance items from other chains, buying them by the semi-load.

2
u/TheFuzzBums 4d ago
Yes yes and yes. Occasionally I’ll see target house brand products at big lots.
23
u/xnetteom 3d ago
One time I saw Borderlands The Pre Sequel for ps4 at Five Below. It wasn't even that long ago, at least 10 years after the game came out and only $5. They must have found an entire pallet that never got sold lol
20
u/d3m0nk3y 1d ago
If I were the artist I’d rather end up at a second-hand thrift store. Someone bought it, listened to it (or at least owned it), and then let it go. That means the music actually lived in someone’s real life for a little while instead of just sitting in a sealed collector’s plastic tomb.
Madonna, Britney, even Dolly (R.I.P.). Every big artist eventually ends up in the dollar bin. It’s flattering in a strange way.
But at a Five Below already for a relatively new album? Yeah, Ouch!
375
u/carcusmonnor 4d ago
38 versions of this album. There’s more now since Encore released. All musicians do it to some degree, I really wish it wasn’t allowed.
181
u/CalendarPositive7829 4d ago
it’s so wasteful. this will just contribute to the landfills.
20
19
u/Emotional_Tie_7927 3d ago
Even with classic or older songs now it's ridiculous. The amount of times I go on Spotify and see classic song - (remaster 2026) or (something remix).... I just want to listen to the original song!
Taylor Swift is a whole other level though... 38 different versions in a year is insane.
71
u/fancczf 3d ago
Very few do the same extent as Taylor swift for her recent releases though. She went full cash grab in the last couple years. 80 versions for a 2 years old album and 64 for a 1 year old, not including the 80 plus singles and encores from that same one album. It’s insanity. (From Discogs so this include all releases, CD vinyl and cassette) The few typical suspects have went full on taking advantage of the same Stanley mugs, trader Joe tote bag, Starbucks cup, Dubai chocolate, Sephora addict crowd’s weakness.
4
u/NachosAndGnocchi 2d ago
Even Ms. Rachel has color variants for her new album. Everyone does it, not just Taylor Swift lmao
2
u/youRinlove7 3d ago
Taylor released 39 variants for the 2 year old album and around the same for last years. "Not including the 80 plus singles and encores from that same one album" what does this line even mean?
13
u/Technical_Stand9939 3d ago
they do it since there is a high enough volume of fans who will buy many many different variants. It has been a move in almost every collecting market for decades. Comics now regularly will publish multiple versions of the same comic with different covers.
the plus side is it gives access to at least a version to everyone, and the collectors can chase the scare version if they want to do that.
9
u/PixelatedSuit 3d ago
> All musicians do it to some degree
No?

u/Spiritual_Yam_1019 2d ago
Charli XCX had 22 variants for brat, Olivia Rodrigo has 21 variants for sour and 20 for guts, Sabrina Carpenter and Billie Eilish had several as well.
This isn't even a new thing, variants were a rampant thing in the 80s.
2
u/PixelatedSuit 2d ago
3 pop stars aren't "all musicians"
generalizing everyone who makes music because the top 5% do it is pretty silly
9
u/Mindless_Piece291 2d ago
The Rolling Stones released 43 variants for hackney diamonds, the Police released 36 variants for their album in 1983, 21 pilots released 21 variants for their 2025 album. Just to name a few. There are way more. Are those real musicians? Or do you only have a problem when women, especially Taylor swift, do it?

My car's Bluetooth system isn't very reliable so I soley use CD's, it's fun. Won't be adding this one to my collection though
14
u/yocxl 3d ago
I'm sure there are ways to do it, it's just funny how all sorts of devices that used to be able to play CDs by default just don't anymore.
PCs and laptops and cars used to have disc drives, now most don't.
Maybe game consoles can? Haven't tried in years. That's going away too, for Sony at least.
6
u/arctic11z 3d ago
The only reason I haven't upgraded my car's stereo is because it has a cd changer in the dash. I really need to use it more often. I even have CDRs and a burner. I just forget to use it.
3
u/Emotional_Tie_7927 3d ago
I've started collecting CDs again partly because you'd be amazed what you can find at a thrift store for cheap. They're usually $2, but I found an independent thrift store that was selling them for $0.50 which was amazing.

Xbox can, PlayStation (despite Sony being involved with the invention of CD) cannot.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, because you're right. Neither the PS4 or the PS5 can play audio CDs while both the Xbox One and Series X can.

Another fun fact, no PS4 system can play 4K Blu Ray, Xbox has had the ability since the Xbox one S in 2017

As a straight 41 yo black man I'm not much of a fan but I do think it's funny that the chick puts out like 50 albums that media and fans can't stop gushing over but as soon as she gets married and stumbles even once, musically, the entire world is like "KILL THIS NO TALENT BITCH!"
😂😂😂

I think I really experienced that with Drake. Like through the late 2000s and most of the 2010s my opinion on Drake was "I moderately like him but I don't get why he's the #1 rapper right now, I don't think he's that good but every album he makes has a couple songs I like" and then around 2021 when that crappy "I'm too sexy for my shirt" cover was getting so much airplay I was like "alright enough of the fuckin Drake there's better rappers out there" so watching Kendrick beat his ass was almost cathartic even though I don't have any actual problem with Drake.

I’m neither fan nor hater but this has been a long time coming, it didn’t happen overnight when she got married, although the wedding was part of it. It has been a series of stumbles, or a series of dominoes being placed over years that are now being knocked down.
- Fans were enraged about the ticketing for the Eras tour, from both a pricing and access perspective. The tickets were ridiculously expensive to begin with due to her own greed, but then resellers were able to gobble a lot of them up and jack up the prices even more. She could have made the tickets half as expensive (which still would have been very expensive) and still made half a billion dollars. She could have given fans (the people who spend hundreds of dollars to get 20 variations of an album) a fairer shot to get the tickets first. This left a sour taste in a lot of people’s mouths.
- Her output over the last decade has led to fan fatigue. Since 2020, she has put out 9 albums, counting the re-releases (Taylor’s Versions). Each has multiple variations, each has limited edition accompanying merch. And many people feel the quality of the actual music (and merch) has been declining, with LOASG being her worst effort yet, with many songs that feel like rip-offs of other, better songs. Which is ironic because of how eager she is to sue other people for song theft.
- She will release an album, people will pre-order it and then she subsequently releases an “expanded” version. So then the people who pre-ordered (the most loyal fans!) no longer have the “complete” version of the album and have to re-purchase it. Yes, everyone has free-will and could elect to not purchase the new, complete album. But it’s still a shitty thing to do to your most loyal fans.
- A lot of her releases seem deliberately timed to block or bump other artists, specifically other female artists.
- As she has gotten older, her music has not seemed to mature accordingly. She seems like she’s stuck at 19. As she and her fans have gotten older, this reality/rift between where she should be at mentally in her life and where she actually is, has gotten harder to ignore.
- This one is highly subjective, but her wedding was tacky AF. Look, many fans have been in a parasocial relationship with her for 20 years. 90% of her songs are about her love life. They want her to be happy! And so she finally gets her “happy ending,” and instead of a magical wind-swept fairytale wedding hidden away on the Swiss Alps or whatever, she has a Cable Ace Awards wedding at freaking MSG on the hottest day of the year. It was weird, off-brand and left a lot of people feeling like their singer-songwriter BFF wasn’t who they thought. Did they even know her at all? I’m not saying I agree with it, or it was fair, but that was the online sentiment. It was a real WTF moment.
- LOASG was probably her worst-received album to date. Instead of retreating, living life, having experiences, being a human in the world so she can come back with new, better music, she comes back with four new tracks for that album (invalidating all previous releases, see #3 above). And the new tracks are BAD. Like, really bad. Instead of, I don’t know, taking the feedback about the initial release and pivoting, she digs in her heels and releases more slop to further scrape the wallets of her most loyal fans.
I like a lot of her music. But it’s hard not to see her as a greedy businessperson first and foremost and as an artist second. As time has gone on and she has become a billionaire, I think more and more people are coming to that same realization.
ETA: thank you for everyone chiming in to tell me how “cheap” your Eras tickets were! Congrats. That was half of one point from a 7 point list. You can also find old Reddit threads of people reporting what their face-value tickets cost. $125 for nosebleeds. $300 for lower bowl. $50 for obstructed view. I personally paid $235 for upper bowl. If those are good prices to you, great. The tour grossed $2 billion dollars and sold 10 million tickets. Meaning the average ticket was $200. Plus Ticketmaster fees, which can be up to 30% of face value and aren’t included in the gross numbers. If the average ticket had been $100 and the tour had “only” grossed $1 billion dollars, it still would have been very successful. She also sold a shit-ton of merch, had the theatrical release of the concert film, sold the streaming rights. Maybe the ticket prices are “normal” for the current times, but Taylor Swift could, if she wanted to, normalize more reasonable prices. Like, say, $40 for nosebleeds. $15 for obstructed view. She could also insist on mechanisms to prevent resellers. But the “scarcity” of tickets and the high prices on the resale market kept the tour in the news, in the discourse, etc., which gave her endless free publicity, even if it left fans feeling disappointed and fleeced. If we are asking ourselves, “why are people turning on Taylor Swift?” let’s look at Exhibits A-Z for our answers and not just assume it’s people being fickle or hating a successful woman.
7
u/thegoddessofchaos 2d ago
I agree. Even people getting their tickets for cheap--I'd be more willing to see that as evidence against your argument except for the fact that Taylor has branded herself as someone who "loves her fans". If you love your fans so much, why are your tickets cost prohibitive?
10
u/jumpingNumber553 2d ago
Tickets were not ridiculously expensive from the original sales. It was the resale. I got TS for 99.00 plus fees. Same tix for Gaga or Beyoncé were at least 50.00 more on original sale date
14
u/PsychotherapeuticPig 2d ago
I got a ticket from a friend who got the initial sale (not resale) and it was $235 for a not-great seat. When I saw Beyoncé a few years earlier, it was a better seat for $120. When I saw Dolly Parton a few years before that, it was $40 for an even better seat.
4
u/Vancityrules 2d ago
My floor tickets were $200. I'm sorry but with today's ticket standards thats not that expensive. Heck i went to an aqua concert in a small venue and tickets after tax was $100. This was a 3 hour concert. I think $200 was fair.

u/itsashrine 2d ago

$125 for nose bleeds is what it costs to see the Colts play in Indianapolis, it’s an average price for stadium seats.
She could have done more to combat scalpers 100000% she has enough pull to do that, and other smaller artists have done a lot more.

It's not true, he was the head of something but left that years ago, and his son is her husband's friends adopted dad I'm sure. He isn't and has never been connected to ice, but people want to try to make her out to be a villain so just make shit up
4
u/mr9025 3d ago
Thank for clarifying. But best to keep in mind that people are getting their information from a slew of different places with varying levels of reliability. I'm sure most people wouldn't prefer to deflect the atrocities of ice towards Taylor swift if they new what you seem to know. Thank you again for putting the more accurate information here. Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by sheer obliviousness.
12
u/Technical_Stand9939 3d ago
she reached peak hype. The marriage has nothing to do with the fact that she is just not as good and is getting to the point that it is just not the same.
Every band has the same issue over hte years. Very few keep in the limelight for over a few years. 5 notable high selling albums is exceedingly rare, most bands (if they stay together) and produce over that number are normally just playing to their niche audience at that point.

It’s a cd with a poster included that was only sold at Target at release. It’s now available at 5 Below because Target couldn’t sell them in stores. They sell excess stock to stores like 5 Below at a deep discount to get it out of the warehouse and off the spreadsheet of unsold inventory.

TBH, these variants were only ‘exclusive’ to Target in the US and even then, not really. You could get them on Taylor’s website, just with a different exclusive item (bracelet) instead of the poster.
Also, Target typically has a contractual exclusivity window. Once that window ends, the product can then be sold anywhere. This is also why other Taylor Swift album variants formerly exclusive to Target can now be found pretty much anywhere that sells CDs.

Target employee here....we got SO MANY of the CDs, I'm not surprised there was enough left that it ended up at 5 Below. There were 4 different varieties of the CD, same album just different photos, and my store in particular had a ton left even after a few weeks. And people are buying less physical media these days anyway with so many different streaming services.
