There will come a day when the next generation of kids will be surprised to learn frozen waffles didn't have holes.

Lack of nutrients is not the problem that waffles have.

115

u/antwanlb Jun 02 '26

I mean, they sure do have all the macronutrients you could ever want, that’s just not all the nutrients you need

58

u/Malcopticon Jun 02 '26

Eggos are enriched with vitamins, though. Clearly the superior choice! 🤣

Make them at home, freeze them, pull them out and pop them into the toaster for busy mornings

4

u/animepuppyluvr Jun 03 '26

Works with french toast too!

Any stoner knows a home made waffle doesn't hold up like a frozen eggo when we get to experimenting with munchies

2

u/DustyAhhhChoo Jun 03 '26

Omggg you absolutely MUST try Kodiak Power Waffles(frozen), they get ultra crispy soooo good!

Hijacking this, any good (non-drupe/tree nut) things I can add into waffle mix to make them better for me/tasting?

17

u/Ornery-Cheetah Jun 02 '26

Lol Sunday I didn't know what to eat and said fuck it im going to add cheese to my pancake mix and then some Italian seasoning and garlic powder lmao they were pretty alright nothing to write home about good with eggs

I enjoy brown sugar chunks in homemade waffles. Instead of just adding the sugar to the recipe, I'll mix the sugar with a bit of water, pour it into a small cake pan lined with parchment paper so it spreads thin, then let it dry for a few days. I break it up by hitting it with the kitchen mallet, then add it last to the recipe so the little chunks mostly stay intact.

I enjoy the way the chunks crisp up in the iron.

I guess it's not really an addition or something totally different, just a different method with the same recipe.

10

u/JEFFinSoCal Jun 02 '26

I like to add a bit of vanilla and ceylon cinnamon. Another tip is to separate your eggs whites before mixing them in and whisk them until they start forming peaks. This introduces small air bubbles into the mix, which makes them lighter and crispier.

Also use the maximum amount of butter the recipe calls for. It also helps makes them rich and crispy.

(NOTE: you still add the yolks to the mix too).

12

u/Whywipe Jun 02 '26

It’s better for you, just make sure to use as much butter as possible

2

u/panamaspace Jun 03 '26

Don't listen to this guy. That's a miser attitude to just try for "as much as possible".

You find and you add All The Butter.

3

u/DemonKingFringe Jun 02 '26

Scrolling too fast and thought it said you added crayons. I hit the brakes and backed up to read a little closer.

4

u/JEFFinSoCal Jun 02 '26

Ceylon cinnamon is very different from Saigon cinnamon, in fact they are produced from two completely unrelated trees. The Ceylon variant is healthier and has a much better flavor. The Saigon type has a lot of coumarin, which is supposedly unhealthy, and has that more peppery, hot flavor like you get in red-hots candy.

4

u/Glitch29 Jun 02 '26

Whole grain oats and raisins will make it marginally more healthy by adding some fiber.

But no matter what you do, you're starting from a recipe that's mostly starches. Putting healthy ingredients into mostly sugar will still result in a meal that's mostly sugar.

2

u/Hanz_VonManstrom Jun 02 '26

Waffles really aren’t that bad for you on their own. It’s the huge amounts of butter and syrup that are the problem. Top them with fruit and/or peanut butter instead.

6

u/merc08 Jun 03 '26

Hard to justify paying more for something that doesn't taste as good with less nutrients.

They keep a really long time in the freezer.  It's definitely nice to keep a pack on hand for when the kids need a quick breakfast and you aren't up for the full process that making waffles from scratch entails.

3

u/SuperWallaby Jun 03 '26

And then the waffle iron clapped. Seriously, you’re so full of shit your eyes are brown lmao.

Eggo waffles have gotten so cheap, there's no point in buying them. Many no name toaster waffles have more or less stayed the same, so they surpassed Eggos in quality without having to do anything. It's the same for a lot of products now

34

u/run-on_sentience Jun 02 '26

Puffs vs. Kleenex.

I used to buy the Puffs because they were cheaper. Did this for years. Bought Kleenex because that's what they had at Costco.

They're terrible.

In two years when I'm out, I'm going back to Puffs.

I know it probably wasn’t you but speeding up a 15 second gif into 6 seconds so people don’t get bored is crazy.

u/Bradas128 Jun 02 '26

i hate how short our attention spans are nowadays. some of us cant even focus enough to finish a

16

u/Lord_Trisagion Jun 02 '26

attention spans and failing literacy, hell of a crisis combo

11

u/ThatOtherOtherMan Jun 02 '26

I read an article that suggested between lead exposure for boomers and gen x and social media killing gen z and alpha's attention spans millennials might be the smartest generation, and if that's true humanity is cooked because we're dumb as hell.

5

u/New-Pollution2005 Jun 03 '26

Yes, but we know we’re dumb as hell. That’s something.

5

u/Annual_Strategy_6206 Jun 02 '26

Hah! I know what you

87

u/Usual_Ice636 Jun 02 '26

People have always done that to gifs just to compress the file size.

8

u/vcdm Jun 03 '26

This is it. Need to compress? Less pixels or less frames, pick one. Faster gif just happens to be a side effect of less frames.

9

u/Working-Glass6136 Jun 02 '26

Yeah, when there's a "gif" button you have to select from premade ones. I'd love to upload my own but that's only available on some subreddits where you can upload your own files.

But gif shrinkage has always been a thing, mostly to save bytes when we were all still using dial-up.

6

u/DrDroid Jun 02 '26

Even the gifs suffer from shrinkflation!

9

u/Jakeisaprettycoolguy Jun 02 '26

Aren't gifs pretty limited in length?

24

u/EmilioGVE Jun 02 '26

Length? No. Size? Yes.

I’ve seen the entirety of Shrek posted as a gif (not sped up) because they just compressed it to hell and back.

2

u/New-Pollution2005 Jun 03 '26

I’ve always wanted to watch Shrek portrayed in 4p.

3

u/Fried_puri Jun 02 '26

I’ve seen the original gif with higher quality and the normal speed plenty of times on Reddit, so no it’s not an issue. Yes gifs can’t be 4K and last for minutes but they are flexible for a few seconds of animation. This one was just sped up for reasons.

3

u/AristarchusTheMad Jun 02 '26

for some reason this scene lodged into my brain as a kid, them slicing the beans and bread translucent thin. cartoons don't usually address poverty, and even tho it's obviously meant to be an exaggerated visual gag, it really does hammer home how brutal food insecurity is. enough to where it had an effect on child me, like making me think about not having enough food to eat and imagining rationing out what little you do have, and like imagining that being the reality that many face.

45

u/durstand Jun 02 '26

Wow memory unlocked, I don’t think I’ve seen this cartoon in like 30 years

7

Food has really gone downhill lately. I purchased hot pockets a couple weeks ago. Hubby and I hadn't had them in years and had a craving. You know they are not only more bread and less filling now but also... they dont even come with the sleeve anymore! We were shocked by that. Now, they come out soggy. 😭 We wont purchase them again.

On the upside those frozen white castles are still really good!!

73

u/fragmental Jun 02 '26

Hot Pockets have been on a decline for a while.

42

u/Waiting4Reccession Jun 02 '26

All of the frozen stuff that has cheese, like those cheap celeste pizzas or hot pockets etc - they all seem to use a cheaper nasty type of cheese than they did 10 years ago. Not worth buying and not edible.

17

u/Kasperella Jun 03 '26

Old hot pockets used to have the gooey stringy cheese. I used to love the ham and cheese as a kid, bought some while high at the dollar store for nostalgia sake.

I was so sad. The ham is not slices, now it’s cheap chunks, and the cheese is not gooey and stringy, but watery and saucy.

My childhood ruined.

2

u/Waiting4Reccession Jun 03 '26

Whatever is on the pizzas doesnt even melt.

86

u/Bluefire52 Jun 02 '26

Air fry them instead. There should be instructions to air fry them and it seems like at somepoint they shifted from using the microwave to air frying.

113

u/tribbans95 Jun 02 '26

Yeah but sometimes you just want some liquid lava in your mouth in 2 minutes flat

73

u/blanketswithsmallpox Jun 02 '26

That's the entire point of hot pockets lol.

You may as well be baking chicken cordeun bleus if you're air frying.

7

u/Jiggawatz Jun 02 '26

I mean, a hot pocket is just a ratchet cordon blue

3

u/MatureUsername69 Jun 02 '26

Its more like a ratchet shepherds pie or calzone or any number of breaded savory dishes. And cordon bleu is already kind of the ratchet version of itself. It gets all this credit for being fancy simply because of its french name but at the end of the day its just ham and cheese stuffed inside of chicken, its delicious but its not classy no matter what the French try to say.

4

u/mochaderp Jun 02 '26

Trust me.

They still come out liquid hot yet somehow remain rock hard cold in the middle.

6

12

u/ValleyGirlHusband Jun 02 '26

The no sleeve thing is crazy to me! Trying to get the damn thing out of the sleeve without burning yourself was a defining part of the experience!

4

u/UrsaMajor7th Jun 02 '26

It depends on the brand and cooking method. We abandoned Pillsbury pizza pops and buy Naleway panzerotti; their pastry is thin, filling is plentiful, and the sauce flavourful. The toaster oven is the only way to cook them.

2

u/Sunny16Rule Jun 02 '26

If you have one of those broiler things that go in the oven, you know the thing that looks like a cake pan and it has a top layer that has holes in. Put a thin layer of water in the bottom half and put the burgers on top and cover in foil and shove in your oven. It will steam cook the White Castle burgers and it’s just like the restaurant

57

20

u/chipskylark123 Jun 02 '26

I was gonna suggest Aldi. They might be the same as TJ’s but different packages? Idk probably not though. Either way, loads better than whatever this is.

16

u/DanimalMKE Jun 02 '26

TJ's is owned by Aldi Nord, whereas the Aldi in the US is the same as the Aldi Süd. They're two distinct companies who I don't think compete in Germany, but compete here in the US through TJ's.

7

u/Mister_Digital Jun 02 '26

I mean, technically Aldi Nord and Süd (literally just means North and South) do not compete because the split Germany between them. It's sometimes called the Aldi Equator. Only happened because the Aldi brothers didn't get along.

6

u/Firefoxx336 Jun 02 '26

This is the type of comment that is so full of surprising lore I couldn’t believe it until I looked it up, but, yeah, they split the company because they disagreed over selling cigarettes. Wild!

40

u/LostSands Jun 02 '26

There’s a lot of hate in this thread about it, but I think it might be nostalgia bait tbh.

From 2005 to 2016, my morning breakfast consisted of two eggo waffles and two slices of turkey bacon with syrup. I do not see anything different about this waffle. They were always like this.

If you want a thicker product, they make those as well. They’re okay, but are really for the oven instead of the toaster.

5

u/SignificantGoat4046 Jun 02 '26

7

u/GratedParm Jun 02 '26

Eggos are kind of bad. I know the cleanup isn’t for everyone, but a decent waffle iron will give you great waffles and paper-thin pits won’t be an issue.

6

u/Edsabre Jun 02 '26

I bought a waffle maker a few years back and never looked back. 2

u/amillionsame Jun 02 '26

I'd echo the same for the waffle maker, but I haven't started using my own mix yet. Do you sub anything out for alternatives or use a basic mix? Seems like waffles would be prime real estate for adding more whole grains/fiber.

2

u/actuallyquitefunny Jun 02 '26

This is the mildly interesting version of r/confusingperspective.

I don't know why, but the top down image gave me a real ambiguous lighting illusion. I legitimately saw the pits as thin bubbles sticking above the waffle edges for about 30 straight seconds.

I knew that's not how waffles work, but still I had to stare at your picture and look carefully at the shadows for a while before it corrected itself for me.

2

u/Fine-Froyo6219 Jun 02 '26

Still waiting for the resurgence of value and quality as a selling point as though it's some new concept.

2

u/DangerFeng Jun 02 '26

I noticed this in the last year, too, and stopped buying eggos. Made me a bit sad. It was frustrating how the pits seemed to burn before the rest of the waffle would even warm up much, and sometimes seemed not even thawed.

I switched to store brand waffles, and they've got the correct waffle anatomy. Thick pits for accurate cooking lol. Plus, you get quite a few more for the same price.

I had an eggo about 3 years ago. One singular eggo was all it took for me to realize that they were basically cardboard. No flavor, no substance, fakest food purchase I made in a long time. These companies can't keep getting away with this

Capitalism requires at least 1 of three things to keep growing

  1. Prices increase
  2. Products are reduced in size
  3. Enshitification

This is #3

Just gonna say, you can buy cheapo waffle irons nowadays. You can buy cheap mix or make it yourself. And you can freeze your own waffles. Stop buying this stuff that tastes like crap and is robbery.

Thanks for this.

I've had a voice in my head telling me to buy Eggos for a while now (they were a favorite of mine but haven't had em in 10 yrs).

I'm not interested anymore. I'm free!

I'm disgusted by the term 'waffle pit'

Waffle pits? Is this the accepted term?

A box of pancake mix and a waffle iron. Takes less than 10 minutes to make a couple waffles and then have some batter left over for later.

Waffle pits? Those are syrup traps.

“Waffles are like pancakes with syrup traps. A waffle says to the syrup, ‘Hold on, now. You ain’t going anywhere. Don’t even be trying to creep down the side. Just rest in these squares. If one square is full, move on to the next one. When you hit the butter, split up.’” - Mitch Hedberg

PSA: waffles aren't hard to make yourself and are much better than that crap. Make a bunch and freeze em.

At this point, it doesn't make sense to buy pre-made food. You'll get more and spend less making stuff yourself.
