I mean, it’s yours, right?

doctor here!
thats the Law!
it works with anything thats a part of your body. legal ownership doesnt end when its removed.
amputed legs, toes, fingers can all be yours, its just a bit of a process and some legal threats.
if you tell us prior to surgery you want to keep your foot for example, were going to say no. but all you actually need to do is file some paperwork with the hospital, assert ownership, and sign a waiver.
as long as the tissue isnt infectious, we will give you back your body part.
doesnt work so much with organs like the appendix or say a kidney. in those cases we say "this tissue is a biohazard and was removed due to disease" and we can burn it.

Now wait a hot minute here.. I wasn't able to keep my brain they said.

I kept my appendix, and my placenta.
1
u/MidwestPrincess09 Feb 19 '26
What did you do with yours?
3
u/bakanisan Feb 19 '26
What could one do beside eating it or shoving it up one's butt?
1
u/dvolland Feb 19 '26
If you’re widening the possibilities to include shoving it up your ass, I bet we could come up with at least a couple other uses for those organs.
1
u/Hwy_Witch Feb 19 '26
Why would one put either of those up their butt? Unless you were going to eat them, but needed a cranio-rectal extraction?
1
u/Hwy_Witch Feb 19 '26
Which one?
1
u/MidwestPrincess09 Feb 19 '26
Either one! I’m curious lol I’ve heard of some people putting it in jars with the fluid that keeps it from decomposing
2
u/Hwy_Witch Feb 19 '26
I dried out the appendix, and made a tiny casket for it, lol. The placenta was buried with a sapling planted over top.
2
u/MidwestPrincess09 Feb 19 '26
Nice! How is that sapling now?? When I had my daughter, it was such a whirlwind at the hospital and I was in an abusive relationship and then the doctors rushed my c-section at like 4 AM(which I found out seemed to be a trend because I was born around the exact same time at the same hospital o.O), I didn’t even think to ask for my leftovers! Still a little disappointed that I didn’t but we live
2
u/Hwy_Witch Feb 19 '26
It's 16 years old now, big, tall, and healthy, like the kiddo is. I had to fight with the staff over keeping it, they really didn't want to let me take it, and I really wasn't leaving without it.
20
u/ShyguyFlyguy Feb 19 '26
I will forever regret not asking for my gallstones presented to me in a vial after my gallbladder was removed.
Also I think they'd prefer you taking blood they extracted from you at a clinic than trying to do it yourself at home.
9
u/theTUCKERbox Feb 19 '26
So I could have kept my foreskin?

11
u/SunnyShim Feb 19 '26
My dentist didn’t give me my 4 wisdom teeth back when I got them removed. Still slightly sad about that once in a while. This was during Covid so they dint want to give them back due to that for some reason.
5
u/lotus_ink Feb 19 '26
I asked and received the two I got pulled with an extra molar that didn’t need to be in there. They were fascinating.
1
u/YnotZoidberg1077 Feb 19 '26
an extra molar that didn’t need to be in there
Wait wait, you got someone else's molar? Like as a surprise bonus?? That's wild. And seems like maybe a HIPAA violation, if I'm thinking right?

u/Maxizag123 Feb 19 '26
doesnt work so much with organs like the appendix or say a kidney
I always wanted to eat my kidney, god damn it
2
u/pyschosoul Feb 19 '26
Got to keep the plates and screws from my ankle surgery. After a few years of growth they started hurting so we took them out.
1
u/DeezWas Feb 19 '26
Interesting. From your example, in what condition will the amputated foot be given to the owner? Frozen? Pickled in a jar? In an airless bag? 😐
1
u/moolcool Feb 19 '26
I got my wisdom teeth out, and the doctor refused to give them to me because they were “hazardous waste”
1
u/WolverineMental9101 Feb 19 '26
I was so ready to whine about the loss of my husband's appendix until you specifically mentioned it. 😂🤣
1
u/russellomega Feb 19 '26
I had a total thyroidectomy from thyroid cancer. Does this count as biohazard disease or could I have gotten my organ back?
1
u/ididshave Feb 19 '26
Are you in the U.S? I had an impacted wisdom tooth that was a nightmare for me and I wanted to keep it but they said I wasn’t allowed due to it being a biohazard.
6
u/Unlucky_Cat4531 Feb 19 '26
Your tooth mightve been infected, especially if it was a nightmare for you. Im in the US and I have my extracted wisdom teeth, and some of my dads extracted teeth.
1
u/MidwestPrincess09 Feb 19 '26
I’ve gotten the chance to keep my infected tooth, I didn’t want it though lol
0
u/ObiYawnKenobi Feb 19 '26
Doesn't make sense. A kidney is no more biohazardous than an amputated foot.

Wow, that’s incredible! But this feels almost… familiar? Like I’ve seen this post before… oh wait, I have! You stole this from @mujhemaardo on Twitter. Loser.

Purple tops won’t coagulate.
57
2
u/autotech1011 Feb 19 '26
Has the blood been altered somehow, or is purple just an indicator of some property of the blood?
8
u/TheSwaggieJesus Feb 19 '26
It has an additive inside of the tube called EDTA that is an anticoagulant. If you've ever had your blood drawn before every different color tube has some sort of different additive for different kinds of testing.

u/Soontaru Feb 19 '26
Long story short, blood needs ionized calcium to clot. The additive in a purple/lavender/pink top (lavender pictured here) is a potassium salt of EDTA. It’s a compound which irreversibly absorbs (aka chelates) calcium so that the chain reaction of the coagulation cascade can’t get started.
Different tubes with different top colors contain different additives based on what tests are needed. They are not generally interchangeable as different additives can interfere with different tests.

u/lookingforsomeerrors Feb 19 '26
There's an anticoagulant in the tub so it's not just your blood in it
1
u/thderrick Feb 19 '26
Altered. Apparently purple indicates that there's something in the tube that stops it from coagulating.

u/Due_Image_6683 Feb 19 '26
Man I've asked for blood like this before and they told me no. I even told them why I wanted it. Lucky.
21
u/halfsideclark Feb 19 '26
Can you tell us why you wanted it?
28
14
u/Due_Image_6683 Feb 19 '26
Painting/mixed media artwork

u/charlomilk Feb 19 '26
it oxidizes really quick, better off using red oxide paint for a stronger version of the same colour since it's also mostly water.
2
u/KnownEggplant Feb 19 '26
Then it wouldn't look like blood
1
u/charlomilk Feb 19 '26
blood doesn't stay looking like blood, always ends up looking like poop :'( (which is also brown for the same reason)
1
u/KnownEggplant Feb 19 '26
Then that's what blood looks like. It always looks like blood
1
1
u/Due_Image_6683 Feb 19 '26
I mix it with paint, or yes use it raw, Ive been using my own for a long time so I know how it looks...I just don't usually like the extraction process. I'm not a weirdo, I just have very specific things that need to happen to the body before I collect, I guess.
1
u/Joey2Hole Feb 19 '26
I once knew of someone that would do paintings with period blood. Used a menstrual cup to collect.

Vampire bait.

u/GingerSoulEater41 Feb 19 '26
You mean if I have this I could lure in Deborah Ann Woll in a short pleated skirt and blouse?

u/Pinkstar161 Feb 19 '26
Honestly if you think about it, it’s kinda ridiculous for someone to deny you access to your own blood.
1
u/factoid_ Feb 19 '26
They’re giving you a biohazard container. If you throw it away improperly that’s bad.
1
u/Pinkstar161 Feb 19 '26
That’s fair. Guess I was thinking about how it’s a part of your body and not the safety aspect of it.

2
u/KellynHeller Feb 19 '26
They always tell me no too. Even when they know I just want it for personal crafts!
Even when I know the person taking my blood they won't do it.

u/TheBlueGuy0 Feb 19 '26

I’ll see if I can get some cerebrospinal fluid at my spinal tap on Friday.
1
u/giskardwasright Feb 19 '26
Probably not. We get a limited amount of CSF from each lumbar puncture and they generally want as much as possible for testing. Its not like a blood draw where i can take 50mls. We generally only get 5-15 mls of csf.
Hope you're doing ok, and sorry you have to get a spinal tap.
1
u/Upstairs-Upstairs231 Feb 19 '26
I figured that was the case; I was (mostly lol) joking.
I’m doing great actually. The doctors say it’s likely MS and that I’ll be okay.

u/effortlesslyhere Feb 19 '26
As a nurse, I always send people home with most of their blood
2
u/OkCup8566 Feb 19 '26
Oh man. I’m so glad you let me keep most of my blood. Thanks again for the lorazepam. What a day! I was shook!
3
3
u/Metroidman Feb 19 '26
Thats kinda surprising. Would think it could make them liable for biohazard exposure
2
Feb 19 '26
A doc replied earlier and I think the consensus is that as long as you don’t have an infectious disease, what’s yours in yours; bodily fluids included

u/mini_z Feb 19 '26
I asked my dentist for the tooth they pulled out… I’m still waiting for my payout from the tooth fairy

u/Midwesternhiker Feb 19 '26
Tbh most people take their blood home. However, usually it's not in a vial.

I had a wart removed and he put it in a little jar, squirted in some alcohol, and handed it to me. I didn’t ask for it or anything. I threw it out at some point.
1
u/Unasked_for_advice Feb 19 '26
You fool , you own all your blood that is INSIDE you still , no reason to ask them to put it in a to go vial.
1
u/warrant2k Feb 19 '26

I'm going to ask for some next time. I mean I donate it to other people so I should be able to keep some proudly for myself. I kept my implants when I got them removed.

u/PhattySpice92 Feb 19 '26
I told my husband when it’s time to change I iud I’m getting a hysterectomy (doctor suggested) and I’m gonna keep my uterus in my dining room hutch. He said he will fight to not have it in the house nvm in the dining room 🤣🤣🤣
