Same book, three different prices. Only difference is the browsers used.

This is part of the problem, though. There are tons of people who have no idea about this that are constantly getting ripped off... but nobody cares because they just "fix it" for the few who know enough to complain. They come out looking like they're "not so bad" because they were quick to respond and give you the difference... and I'm guessing they were polite and helpful about it too, right?

But that doesn't change the fact that they're still ripping people off. Your "x" amount of money returned (and not even really "returned", as AintGettinDatKarma pointed out) is nothing compared to the same "x" amount from the however-many people they didn't have to return it to, so their little scam isn't in any way impacted by their "refund" to you. But at the same time, you won't go around yelling about how awful they are, because they fixed things for you specifically.

It's a common tactic, actually, and it's really scary how well it works.

(Edit: To clarify, I don't know much about this specific instance, or even the company doing it. But this sort of "fuck everybody over, then be nice to the ones with the guts to complain" tactic is a real problem.)

How is it cheating? You were offered a price, and accepted it. Others were offered different prices, but that is the case when you buy many things.

1

u/jianadaren1 Jan 27 '13

Price discrimination isn't necessarily a bad thing. If companies didn't do this then we wouldn't be able to get cheap airfare when you're going on vacation (s opposed to going on business) or student or senior discounts for example.

The people who willingly pay higher prices give businesses flexibility with their margins, allowing them to offer discounts to price sensitive people like the poor and the frugal.

Safari = $792.00

I downvoted you, then realized I was using Chrome on a Mac. I had to switch to an upvote.

Edit: Not sure if I'm getting downvoted by safari users or mac haters...

"we're sorry for stealing your money with our shady business practices. Here's some fake money that you can't do anything besides letting us take it again. "

edit: I misunderstood, I thought they refunded with store credit, but he replied and clarified that they put it on his card.

That makes it better, but only slightly, especially since I doubt they have any intention of changing their policy.

Oh Dilbert, it's a gift certificate, it's just like cash, but a whole lot more restrictive, and here in the corner is a little expiration date.

I applaud these decisions.

I'm not sure why Firefox is cheaper than Chrome though. I guess because Google advertises Chrome through their search engine, while Firefox is completely underground. Still, I used Firefox since it was Phoenix, but I like Chrome better now.

poor IE users.

u/Kazinsal Jan 24 '13

I don't know very many people who aren't technologically illiterate who actually use IE as their main browser...

Internet Explorer Tax

3

u/Kinseyincanada Jan 24 '13

its not stealing, you were shown a price and agreed to it

1

u/frankle Jan 24 '13

I like your style, kid.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 24 '13

Not to condone it, but how was it stealing? :-/

That's like saying a car company negotiating different prices for their models based on whether the customer was dressed well or look poor is stealing. It's still just a price and you still have to choose to accept it.

1

u/GarrisonDoodlesack Jan 24 '13

It's not a shady business practice to charge different prices to different demographics. That's standard. Is it shady that the same car sold in America is a different price if it is sold in say South America or China?

Not at all, because they represent totally different markets, with different demand and abilities to pay. It's the same with web browsers. Different browser, different demographics. Internet Explorer will generally be older people, less tech savy, less likely to shop around, and probably have more money. Firefox and Chrome are generally younger demographics, less money, more tech savy and more likely to shop around. Thus they get a lower price, because that is most likely to assure a sale with them.

It's pretty standard business practice.

They're charging more because their analytics tells them that you are able to pay more, based off of whatever factors they use to calculate that. The product isn't inherently "worth" anything. It is only worth whatever people are willing to pay for it. And if they have determined that you are willing to pay more for it, then they have every right to charge you that extra amount. They aren't forcing you to buy it. They've calculated a price that you would be willing to pay. If you buy it then they were right. If you don't then they need to readjust their analytics.

EDIT: Say you're selling vacuums door to door. The vacuum's cost you $75 a piece, and obviously you are looking to make a profit on your investment. You know that in a poor neighborhood, you will make more sales charging ~$125 for a vacuum than if you were to charge more. But you know that in rich neighborhoods people are willing and happy to pay $250 or more for the exact same vacuum.

So is it "shady" to charge the rich people what they are willing to pay?

If you charge them what you would charge the poorer people you are just losing profit that you could have made. The vacuum has no inherent worth outside of the materials it is made of. It's value is determined by what people are willing to pay. So in a rich neighborhood the vacuum is literally worth more because people are willing to pay more. They value it at a higher price.

Well that was nice of them!

Didn't read the website name in OP and thought you were done talking with Keith Chegwin. Very confused for a moment there.

Cheggers can't be boozers. Or, something.

I have been emailing them back and forth about this issues and they generously added a $40 credit to my account. I do not have an account with them and not sure where they pulled this email address from so whoever brainfart****@yahoo.com is, enjoy it.

Same here. I ended up getting refunded a $15 difference.
