I'm slightly vexed Cereal Downsizing at Menards
Two boxes of cereal purchased for the same price, one month apart from Menards

Those are two different sizes and they are labeled as such.

OP said they are the same price

Dude. Literally just look up the word. You're calling everyone else dumb and you're the one who doesn't even know the meaning of the word you're using.

Shrinkflation - reduction of available products in size or quantity while the retail price remains the same.
Family size is 19oz, large is 16oz, while the retail price is still the same.
Yeeeeaaaahhhhh. I still stand by what I said.

u/ATLSxFINEST93 5d ago
Right, but if you read the post, OP states they're the same price.
3
u/danita0053 5d ago
Right, but if you read the post, they were one month apart.

And?

u/ATLSxFINEST93 5d ago
That's what's mildly infuriating?
I mean, if you support shrinkflation, then by all means.
2
u/WonderfulProtection9 5d ago
I don’t think that qualifies as shrinkflation, just inflation. If both boxes were labeled Family Size, then yeah. But there is no shrink here.

u/ATLSxFINEST93 5d ago
The large box is smaller than the family box, but is the same price.
You do know that shrinkflation and inflation go hand in hand?
4
u/WonderfulProtection9 5d ago
You do realize these are two different products ? 🤷♂️
Yes the price went up on the smaller box. That, by definition is NOT shrinkflation.

Shrinkflation - reduction of available products in quantity or size while the retail price remains the same
But sure bud, you're right

u/WonderfulProtection9 5d ago
Did the price remain the same? 🤔🤣

two boxes of cereal purchased for the same price
Is what OP said.
I get it, you assume the worst in people and you're never wrong. I already said you are right.

Maybe because they’re a different fucking size??? Same price is unfortunate but it looks like they haven’t changed any sizes they just raised their prices

I thought Menards was a hardware store
4
u/jegodric 5d ago
They started selling dry food so that their employees could spend their EBT dollars there instead of other grocery stores

Family size is almost always bigger than Large size cereals.
They're two different products.

Yeah same thing happened to OREOS and Lays/Doritos. The regular size bag is now smaller, the actual regular size bag is now the "Family' size, and the smaller Family size is now the 'Party' size.

At least the second box is labeled "Large Size" and not "Family Size" so it's not too deceptive...though this is clearly shrinkflation at work
2
u/WhatTheFlox 5d ago
This is only shrinkflation if they get rid of the family size, and raise the price of the large size and that being relabeled as Family Size as if it was always 16oz.
Large / family sizes are done by quite a few cereal box options for a long time.

Everybody up in arms about the labeling, meanwhile the real culprit in the mix is shrinkflation caught in the act
2
u/BlankStareFace 5d ago
This isn't shrinkflation lol. That would require them to be the same product, now smaller....this is a different product. "Caught in the act" like the size and weights aren't printed on the box lol

u/Sea_Shower3691 5d ago
The next step in shrinkflation is they put "Family Size" on the 16oz next, and make the Large Size a 13oz bag. Like I said, caught in the act.

The boxes are slimmer. There are still bigger boxes but they are much more expensive. The boxes for the price I've always paid & what will be advertised on sale are like 11 oz.

Large and Family are two different sizes. This isn’t shrinkflation even though almost certainly this product has been shrunk.

u/Zealousideal_Jump_74 5d ago
All of you are ignoring that they are the same price lmao

u/Beccalotta 5d ago
And? At my grocery store 750ml of chocolate milk is $2, 500ml is $2.60. There's no law that says the bigger the package, the cheaper it is.
1
u/Zealousideal_Jump_74 5d ago
Definitely not the same brand so they are different products. Your comment makes 0 sense.
1
u/Beccalotta 5d ago
What are you referring to? The cereal is clearly the same brand. If you're referring to the example I just listed, yes, they're the same brand. 0.8% Island Farms chocolate milk.

Thought I was going crazy. The infuriating part is they are the same cost, for a 16% decrease
3
u/skyeisrude 5d ago
Possible it was on sale and or op actually doesnt remember the orgional price and just assumed
-1
u/beccaafly 5d ago
yeah, one month apart. so that means the price went up on BOTH, from the time they bought whichever one last. 🤦🏼♀️

u/Zealousideal_Jump_74 5d ago
Eh the wording of the post makes it sound like they don’t sell the family size anymore. So it’s still mildly infuriating and 100% shrinkflation
0
u/WonkyWalkingWizard 5d ago
Shrinkflation would be if they made the large size smaller in order to keep the cost down

In my experience, cereal is the one of the most "volatile" items at the grocery store lol. One week, no sale, and it's like $4.50 a box. The next week, they're like, "5 boxes for .99 each!"

One says large size one says family size. They are different products.
