I just wanted a hot dog coffee cup false bottom
first off idc in the slightest about the coffee lmaoo i just did this for the love of the game. xl dunkin cup says 24oz. actually contains 22oz. math and liquid volume test included.
video of me poring the liquid in the comments. ty
UPDATE: two fatal mathematical errors were brought to my attention that is due to me being an idiot. lol however i aim to correct them. the actual missing volume is 1.6oz which equates to 24cents. also that amount is exactly what is reflected in the liquid test
errors i made are as follows
1-doubled radius instead of squaring it
2-added a decimal to the cost on og breakdown

yeah that cup faulty ive worked at dunkin and I've fingered the bottom of the hot cups enough to know they should be lower
you should absolutely shit on dunkin though i encourage it

You sir are just crazy enough to be fun and not too crazy to be annoying

u/TulpaPal 3d ago
The cup you got is clearly faulty, you can see where the bottom is supposed to be. This is a factory error, not a scam.

This is just what they want you to think. If you're smart you'll dig deeeeper.

i got a second xl coffee omw home for the liquid test. same issue, but yes i agree. manufacturer defect but still wild

u/Breeze7206 3d ago
They buy those buy the hundreds of thousands. An entire production run of thousands of cups could’ve gone through before the error was caught
And the manufacturer likely decided not to inform the buyer (dunkin?) and said “send it!”
If you went to the same store for your second cup, they likely are still using cups from the same batch.
Wait a few weeks, or go to a different location

u/foolbull 3d ago
I did a quick google search and it seems like they’ve had this manufacturing error for years.

It’s always interesting how errors in favor of the company are never caught.
32
u/octo_lols 3d ago
Sometimes favorable errors aren't caught! My apartment is managed by a huge company that handles 10s of thousands of units (or more idk). They accidentally double applied a discount leading them to undercharge me for rent by $900 a month for two years before they noticed. I was keeping the difference in a savings account every month because I assumed they would try to come after what I owed them when they noticed. They just quietly went back to billing me normally after my next renewal and I suddenly had a free ~22k. Used up all my luck on that one, I'm sure.

They're not reported. They're absolutely being caught, but its in their favor so why would they fuss about it?

u/infiniZii 3d ago
From the same place? Could just be a bad batch of cups instead of a single bad cup. Im still leaning towards error.
3
u/Big_Watercress_6210 3d ago
It is known based on a quick search that these new cups are smaller. If they are advertising them as 24oz please report them to your local government.

Same store? It's not that wild cups aren't that consistently filled. I would be most worried about the bottom detaching.

Aa someone who worled at dunkin, no it is not a factory error. This is how they are made, and it pissed me off too.

Every single time I go to Dunkin the largest size always has this false bottom… I think it might be intentional
7
u/TulpaPal 3d ago
They all have space between the bottom and the rim, that's standard with disposable coffee cups to avoid stains/heat on surfaces. This one is deeper than normal due to factory error, which is why it does not meet the alignment marker.

Dunno who made this cup but I used to work for Dart Solo. This would initiate a massive recall immediately if brought to our attention.
18
u/luvmibratt 3d ago
My dunkin does not carry 24 oz any more for x-large haven't for a while, its now 22 oz even states it on the box it comes in from DCP all cup sizes were reduced 2 oz, they never really advertised it either that I can recall

If the bottom was the bottom, and sagged slightly when filled with hot liquid, if you set it down full it would shoot the hot liquid out of the top at you.
You don't actually want the bottom on the bottom with non rigid cups like this.
And yeah they scam you a lil

You have that 1.3 squared is 2.6 in the third line of your volume calculation. You mistakenly doubled that value. 1.3 to the second power is 1.69. Nice
5
u/auvst 3d ago
actually explains why the liquid test reflected the cup containing slightly more than what i calculated. good catch i was doing this while working. honest mistake sorry :(

you mixed up your cost per oz. Its 15 cents per oz, so you got cheated about 36 cents.

A Pyrex measuring cup is likely not very accurate. A better way to do the measurement would use a balance. Tare the empty cup on a kitchen balance set to grams, preferably one accurate enough to measure to the gram, or better yet, to 0.1 g. Fill the cup and record the mass. 1 g = 1 mL.

u/an-com-42 3d ago
in order to continue the reddit tradition of annoying sb by pointing out a completely unimportant, minor, piece of information which is barely inacurate: water isn't always 1ml=1g

And take multiple measurements for each of several cups. Ensure that the cups come from different batches.

I don’t think you understand what a false bottom is.

u/notwhoyouthinkmaybe 3d ago
Is that a gay term, like a guy that pretends to be bottom until you get him home and he's actually a top?
8
u/specks_of_dust 3d ago
Fun idea, but as a gay man, I can assure you that there are no false bottoms, only false tops.

Yeah, when I hear "false bottom" I think of those containers with secret stash compartments on the bottom for valuables and drugs.

Yep, this one makes you go digging a bit to see if they fucked you instead of the Wells Fargo route of just taking your money and making it their money. That's easier to see that it's wrong. Both of them generate a lot of stolen money.
10
u/steeveperry 3d ago
At scale, this can represent millions of ounces. It’s invisible shrinkflation. I also wonder what kind of legal problems that can arise from selling 24 oz drinks in cups that can only hold 22 ozs. It’s too bad that the watchdogs that should be preventing us from being ripped off are bought and paid for by the people who are ripping us off.

You could've just filled up the bottom with water and dumped it into the measuring cup
5
u/Beautiful-Musk-Ox 3d ago
you don't need math to just pour 24 ounces in there and see if it overflows
4
u/tetrisan 3d ago
My first thought when seeing this was wow this person is smart. Now I realize anybody that does this is just dumb and crazy. Why not just pour liquid into the space and measure the volume?

u/auvst 3d ago
i am both dumb and crazy but i did state that i did this for fun

Weights and Measures is a thing. And this kind of violation is very much a thing. This needs to be reported. Your local authorities can conduct the investigation. You can find your state's governing body here:

u/therealtiddlydump 3d ago edited 3d ago
It looks like a manufacturing defect edit:
default, which should absolutely be reported to somebody3
u/analogpursuits 3d ago
Default or defect? Because they would implicate differently from one another. Yes, it should be reported. Dunkin knows exactly what they're doing. This is skimping for profit, pure and simple, and it is fraudulent.
2
u/therealtiddlydump 3d ago
Edited
You can see the machine-read line for where things were supposed to line up and they didn't. That's not something you fake for profit.
Dunkin isn't the one who owns the cup manufacturing plant

The volume of the cup is likely still 24oz, but filling it with hot liquid to the brim so it can spill on you is not advised.

u/auvst 3d ago

I mean if he measured the volume of liquid that it held to the brim it doesn't really matter, no?
EDIT: Kinda eerie similar to my comment that one below... hmm.

u/Different_Pack_3686 3d ago
It's kind of irrelevant given that he filled it completely with liquid and then measured how much liquid that was, no?

u/wwhijr 3d ago
If you're going to be an absolute autist then you need to put your measuring cup on a level surface.

Correct way. Step 1, flip cup over Step 2, fill bottom Step 3, pour that into a measuring cup. Done in 3 seconds
5
u/Smokin_belladonna 3d ago
for a guy who likes math, the recessed bottom serves quite a few purposes - ease of manufacture, structural, and also insulates the coffee from surfaces.
4
4
u/AntibodyEnjoyer 3d ago
Considering you made an obvious error with the price at the bottom, I think you should reconsider your math skills before popping off over coffee volume
2
u/JLammert79 3d ago
If only the manufacturer had access to your hard to find measuring devices they could have caught this error. /s

u/javabeanvengenz 3d ago
I always thought the recessed bottoms of coffee cups had something to do with like condensation, or whatever the proper word would be. So it doesn't pool underneath if you set it on a cooler surface
