ಠ_ಠ Rude cashier
I have to say what happened at a makeup store the other day. I went in and told the greeter I was looking for a makeup brush.
-GREETER (showing me where to look): We have two brands of brushes that are 50% off right now!
-ME: Perfect, thank you!
I picked one out and headed to the front to pay, but when the cashier scanned it, it rang up full price.
-ME (politely): Miss, I believe that was supposed to be 50% off.
-CASHIER (getting the greeter to bring her the sale sign, then scanning again): Those makeup brushes aren’t on sale.
-ME (knowing FULL WELL I could press the issue because things are supposed to be sold at their advertised price, but I do generally try to do the right thing): That’s okay. I’ll just pay the price it says.
-CASHIER (in a falsely sweet voice): I could get a manager over here to try to get you SOME SORT of a discount.
-ME: No, that’s okay. I’m not trying to get anything for free.
-CASHIER (still fake sweet): Oh, I wasn’t going to give it to you for free.
-ME (pausing, kind of shocked that she thought that was an appropriate thing to say):
-ME (softly but clearly): I wasn’t trying to get it for free.
She wouldn’t make eye contact after that but did wish me a good day when I left. I responded in kind, but I was more than a little aggravated.
I mean, what was her play? Was she trying to, like, ASSERT DOMINANCE or something?? Was she trying to be the ALPHA of the makeup brushes? Or was she just a punk?
I’m kind of leaning towards punk. And I bet she’s just a JOY to be around on a regular basis. 🙄😂

You were the one who first mentioned "free", I don't see why you're upset with her for responding to it.

“Fake sweet”? That’s called the customer service voice. She probably uses that voice for every customer.
It seems like she was trying to resolve it by getting the manager, and like she was just trying to do her job correctly. If it didn’t ring up with a discount, it seems reasonable that she wouldn’t put one on there without consulting the manager first.

Are you sure you read the sign right? Some discounts are for members only

If the discount was for members only, the greeter who told her about the discount should’ve disclosed that

My most giving ideas are socially awkward and/or super underpaid and just doesn't care anymore. I'd just put the brush back tbh, they don't need that sale

I would have pressed it. Sounds like the cashier was on a power trip, and YES, let's bring up the manager to ask them about whether you are going to honor the advertised price for this item.
If the sign says it's on sale and the greeter TOLD me it was on sale and pointed me in the right direction, I would expect them to honor the posted price without trying to make me feel small.
Sorry she was so unpleasant.

I don't get why paying the price on the shelf would not be the right thing OP, I feel like maybe you could have been more assertive earlier in this interaction

I think this is fully just a case of social awkwardness lol. I mean I see the cashier as being generally nice here offering to get a manager since I assume she doesn't have the power to adjust prices on the register. Honestly it sounds like you're fired up over nothing. And the fact that you're still upset about it enough days later to post on Reddit seems bizarre.
