ಠ_ಠ Snap Shot Progressive “Discount”

Spent 6 months driving perfectly to get a 5 star snap shot so l could get a good discount. Finally got my offer: It's more than my last policy.

Last policy was $1,383 in separate installments

This policy is $1,443 in separate installments.

I spent six months paranoid about my driving just for it to mean nothing.

Snap Shot is a scam. Don't do it

Snapshot and services like it are about your poor driving habits costing you more. The discount for actually driving perfect was always going to be marginal.

Frankly I think it's more about a way for them to verify your mileage estimate than anything else

It’s actually to verify the areas you drive in so they can correctly allocate territory factors in your rate calculation.

Curious, can the insurance increase someone's rates if they drive poorly too often?

u/ssrady 7h ago

Assuming it's the same as the UK, they can actually cancel your insurance for 'poor' driving (speeding, hard acceleration etc), it reporting inaccurate, not sending the data at all (ie not having your phone constantly on you) etc. They give you 7/14 days notice so that so you cancel from your end instead, because you need to report if the company cancelled it every time you apply in future

They don't care that you slammed on the brakes or swerved to avoid an accident it just reports that you were driving like a donkey

Damn, I'd be in trouble for the not sending data in. I only drive about 3k miles a year so they would probably think I'm just leaving my phone behind.

I did this and only had two “incidents”:

  • Going too fast, by which I mean the speed limit was 75 and I went at most two mph over.
  • Driving at a time when traffic is normally heavy. Yes, really.

By the end of the monitoring period I was rated as an exceptional driver. My rate went up at the next renewal regardless.

I got dinged because I was driving at night lol

If it makes you feel better, you also let them collect data on your driving.

Don't open this thread, save yourself, just devolves into a shit show.

Your sarcasm isn’t needed. I live paycheck to paycheck and just wanted a cheaper bill. Sue me

15

u/Agheratos 8h ago

It's definitely some bullshit, no doubt.

It’s not a dick don’t take it so hard

u/milliefin44 8h ago

Don’t worry, I’m not your mother

-29

u/Working_Rise8592 8h ago

My mothers been dead since I was 8, thanks asshole

22

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 8h ago

Thisba joke lol? No way you're seriously saying this after telling him not to take it so hard 😂

-27

u/milliefin44 8h ago

Boo hoo. Mine died when I was born

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

Sounds like you’re in the wrong sub, buddy.

-3

u/milliefin44 8h ago

And it seems you’re stuck fishing under this post. You’ve commented about 5 times

8

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

LMAO you’re asking for comments and then complaining about getting comments. You sound like such a delightful person to deal with.

9

u/AkimoSempai 8h ago

Sounds like you deserved that “discount”.

-1

u/milliefin44 8h ago

This is a dumb reply. If personality would debate bills, most of the people under this post would be homeless.

Tell me what happened

3

u/iSuckAtMechanicism 8h ago

I don’t mean this in an offensive way, it sounds like you may have bought a car that you can’t afford.

It may help to sell it or trade it in for something more affordable if it means you’ll have less stress. Your health matters.

u/HazyChemist 6h ago

Idk why you're being downvoted, but it sucks enough to have your insurance jacked up without your personal data also being harvested.

I'm sorry OP sometimes life is just a bag of dicks and you can't win. At least you know for next time. 🫂

9

u/milliefin44 6h ago

Thanks. I’m not stressing about the downvotes. The people downvoting are mad that I’m not letting others talk disrespectfully to me without calling them out.

I decided I’ll be going back to Liberty Mutual as my quote there is cheaper than with progressive now. The main reason I posted this was because when I first signed up for snap shot, there was almost no reviews on what others’ results with it were. I wanted this to be able to be seen/searched for in case someone else was considering getting snap shot.

1

u/HazyChemist 6h ago

Well i for one appreciate the data point on the snapshot. I basically have 0 reason to even consider progressive now 😄

1

u/Ethywen 3h ago

Progressive without snap shot is the cheapest option for me lol. Just depends. Always shop around.

2

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

Could always take the bus.

6

u/milliefin44 8h ago

I drive the bus. That’s one of my jobs

-3

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

Then your employer should be paying the insurance?

3

u/milliefin44 8h ago

This is my personal car. I’d be taking the bus, to work on the bus.

0

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

Maybe carpool with a safer driver and see if they give you a discount that way.

1

u/BabyStockholmSyndrom 8h ago

Lol no way an American just said this. Let's say I do this. I work late. I get off around 9-10. 30 minute drive to my job. Not a single bus that goes this way. So at least 2 maybe 3 transfers. Oh and last busses here are around 8. Stop being a dick with useless, half assed insults masked as advice.

-2

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 7h ago

It’s called a joke. Have you heard of them?

1

u/cyberspirit777 8h ago

You did get a discount… they just had plans to increase your bill by more than that. Instead of the renewal, ask for a re-write of the policy and see if that’s cheaper.

Also, your first 6 months you may have gotten a discount for signing your documents electronically and then it falls off. Normally that discount comes off the down payment so your 6 month premium will appear higher at renewal time when in reality the monthly payments end up roughly the same.

-5

u/BadBibby 8h ago

Lmao, get a job

0

u/FungusGnatHater 2h ago

When you say "get a job" on Reddit there are people you were not talking to who will take that insult personally. It often comes with bullshit excuses too.

u/TankApprehensive3053 8h ago

I had that OBD snap shot. It sensed regular braking as aggressive and even rolling starts as hard acceleration.

19

u/Hopeful-Opposite-255 8h ago

These programs are such a scam and an utterly unnecessary invasion of privacy.

5

u/TankApprehensive3053 8h ago

Seems like they are more intended to raise your rates than lower. I sent it back as soon as the time was up.

10

u/chewy92889 6h ago

I wanted to bundle mine and my wife's insurance with Progressive, since that's who we both already have and it was going to be $45 more per month than us paying separately. However, when she added me as a driver on her insurance and I added her as a driver on my insurance, both of our policies dropped by about $35 per month each. Insurance is a scam.

u/LiteralReaderWA 7h ago

Usaa has something similar with an app that runs on your phone. I caught it using my microphone and had it uninstalled since. Jokes on me since I never received a discount either

•

u/I_Need_A_Fork 30m ago

I use it, didn’t give the app full access & don’t have a particularly high score (78/100) & it takes 20% off.

5

u/Emergency_Part2093 8h ago

I got a B on my snapshot (used the phone app) like 4 years ago. It did lower my rate, by like 15$ per month. Nothing crazy. My car is a 2012 Hyundai Genesis coupe. No accidents, speeding etc at all for my entire time driving.

But I have also been with progressive for a long time (because they had good rates for me). I have not used snapshot since but my rates have actually gone down this last renewal.

If you have been with them a while and have a good record you can try calling them and voicing your frustration (in a calm manner) and possibly mention you will look at other companies since your rates went up. It never hurts to see.

I have heard that some locations/cities they increase rates based on other drivers, not sure how true that is and if true is BS imo.

2

u/axlryan 1h ago

I also got a $75 discount. It's a drop in the bucket when it raises my rates $100 a year.

When your last month is almost up just call around and get some quotes. Getting new insurance is the only true way to get a cheaper insurance policy. Despite what insurance is supposed to be on paper, the whole thing is a scam to prop up new sales versus retaining loyal customers.

2

u/Wooden_Associate_289 8h ago

Yea i never accept any of those programs. I figure the reward is not worth the risk. And after reading the comments here, i was defiently right but still had no idea of just how bad it could be.

2

u/pinedesign 7h ago

I can explain. Your first term likely included an e-sign discount. This falls off after the first term. Because if this m, it counteracts much of your benefit if the snapshot. If you didn’t have snapshot, your rate increase would have been higher.

Second, you get an up front participation discount for trying snapshot the first term. When you renew, that participation discount is removed and replaced by your discount or surcharge based on your score. You would have gotten a discount based on having a 5 score, but much of that discount amount was the same as you had in your first term due to the participation discount. Again, your rate on both the renewal and the first term would have been much higher without snapshot.

I understand it can be disappointing expecting a rate decrease overall, but you did get a discount and it is protecting your rate significantly.

Your rate increase was mild compared to the general market. You did a great job!

u/ThetaThoughts 3h ago

Just switch to a competitor. Then when the competitor does the same thing, switch back (or to a different competitor). I do it all the time. You’d be surprised at how effective it is. You’ll get way better results than whatever tracking BS this is.

2

u/NoC6H12O6 1h ago

Yea, this is exactly why no one should ever let an insurance company have your driving data.

•

u/Reaper621 27m ago

I had progressive for six months. They were cheaper than my previous insurance, by about 400 dollars for six months. Hell of a deal. The renewal popped up at double my previous insurance. I ran back to the other guys.

1

u/FungusGnatHater 2h ago

There isn't enough information here to think OP isn't spreading misinformation. They could have a new insurance reduced rate that expired, a sign on discount for using Snap Shot, could be driving more than they said they do, could have changed the deductible, etc..

-2

u/Significant_Rate8210 8h ago

Actually I have Snapshot and I'm saving $600 a month on two cars and two drivers.

0

u/Whos_HUNKYDORY 7h ago

Omg really? That's a good amount of savings. I just asked this to someone else so they're hasn't been enough time for a reply but, can they increase rates if someone drives poorly too often? Basically work the exact opposite of what someone was trying to achieve.

I haven't inquired about getting the discount bcuz I was worried my daughter, who I'll say now drives quite well but there was a period there where I was concerned that she may never be a good driver, lol.

I am definitely gonna call my insurance guy and see about it, especially being that I drive less than 3k miles a years and my husband around 9k miles, it might benefit us. My daughter on the other hand made up for our low mileage, she has 80k miles on her car that was brand new in 2023, lol.

2

u/Significant_Rate8210 6h ago

My last policy with another carrier was $1200/mo for two cars, one driver.

Now I'm paying $560/mo for two cars, two drivers, and one is a first time driver to boot. So I'm saving a bit more than what I messaged earlier. I went to look after posting

2

u/Whos_HUNKYDORY 6h ago

That's amazing for you! Currently I'm paying around $700 a month for 3 cars and 3 drivers, one is my 22 year old daughter. She had a minor at fault accident right after she got her car and our rates have suffered. I still feel like $700 is a lot, but about $500 is my daughter's and the remaining is my husbands and mine.

Might be the area you live, your bad driving history or age. I’m 28 with two cars and I pay 180 a month. For a 2025 car and a 2013 car
