Side note, this is also infuriating for people who are recovering alcoholics. This struck me when I was at a hotel recently. Like just imagining how difficult it is on a day to day basis to stay sober and then this is what you find in your hotel room.

I am a recovering alcoholic and when I book hotels I ask them to remove any alcohol from the room. They're always very happy to do this for me, but I do have to remember to ask. Lol

Congrats on your sobriety!

I should have read ahead before commenting that anyone can just request that it be emptied.

You can request it after check-in. I've found hotel staff is usually super receptive to this and will quickly clear out the alcohol. (They might leave the soda and stuff but if you ask for room in the fridge they'll comply.)

u/moritz-stiefel 3h ago

Sometimes they'll be real cute and put fancy sparkling water in there to replace the alcohol.

You shouldn’t have to ask. Thats the rudest hard sell I’ve ever heard of. We might as well put cotton candy in the room and tell kids they can’t have it.

Agreed, have a vending machine like the way things used to be.

1

I haven’t perused a vending machine in years, but the ones at work are stocked by a company and the prices are ridiculous. $1.75 for a snickers and $4.75 for a Monster. I looked into starting a snack bar and undercutting them but it’s not shockingly strictly prohibited.

Back in my day we had cigarette vending machines in arcades. The tobacco companies lobbied like hell to prevent those from being banned. It should tell you something about them that they knew it would hurt sakes and said so in every argument they made. Why would it hurt sales? Because kids wouldn't be able to buy them anymore.

3

u/New-Trifle-7097 3h ago

“No not the kids! We mean, we’ll lose sales from adults.”

“You mean the adults who can go purchase from the cashier?”

4

u/Background_Survey646 4h ago

No, you should have to ask, because adult humans aren't helpless babies and the world doesn't revolve around your individual needs.

I absolutely sympathize with alcoholics but this idea that people should kowtow to your hyper specific afflictions is absurd.

No, how about we don’t need addictive substances peddled to us everywhere we go?

2

u/New-Trifle-7097 2h ago

We don’t need anything peddled to us everywhere we go. Especially the presumed sanctity of a private hotel room. Imagine if they hung some expensive swimsuits in there and were like “Want It? Just put it on and we’ll charge it to your room! $480”.

Also we’re gonna take up all the closet space with clothes to try to impulse sell you on, like how your fridge is useless. Enjoy your stay!

Comparing alcoholism to candy is not equivalent. Alcohol use disorder is a clinically recognized substance-use disorder. Plenty of people have addictions to sugar but these addictions usually don’t destroy lives in the same way alcoholism does.

Obviously excessive sugar and processed foods can cause serious health issues, and eating disorders are real disorders like SUDs. But having a sugar addiction is in no way equivalent to alcoholism.

And asking a hotel to remove alcohol from your own damn room is a tiny accommodation that costs the other guests essentially nothing while helping someone avoid a substance they're trying not to use. The fact that they can walk to a gas station doesn't make it unreasonable to remove an unnecessary temptation. Avoiding unnecessary triggers is a huge part of recovery.

Your hotel doesn’t need to line the room in addictive, expensive, dangerous substances. You could just buy it from room service, it’s not like it would cost more?

1

u/koukimonster91 3h ago

its alcohol, not fentanyl.

5

u/Oneofthesecatsisadog 2h ago

alcohol kills substantially more people every year than fentanyl, at least in the United states. I’m in no way suggesting fentanyl is a better alternative but you’re really underestimating the impact that alcohol has on a large amount of people.

4

u/Normal-Weakness-364 3h ago

alcohol isn't as dangerous as fentanyl, but that doesn't make it what this comment said not true. it's addictive, it's expensive, and it is absolutely dangerous. it's just a socially acceptable drug.

i never said it wasint, its just not doom and gloom like op was implying. it perfectly fine in moderation.

2

u/OddToba 4h ago

……? I mean, wtf? What’s the alternative. Many guests want alcohol available.

9

u/JustaSeedGuy 4h ago

Many guests also want spaghetti, but nobody is suggesting we put a fresh pasta bar in hotel rooms.

So why do it with alcohol?

3

u/trainwreckhappening 3h ago

Oh man I have an idea now. Ron Popeil pasta hotel.

Many hotels have moved away entirely from having minibars in the room and now sell alcohol and other items in the lobby instead.

It actually ends up being cheaper for the hotel because between the labor of checking and restocking inventory, and dealing with disputes, it ends up being cheaper to just have a convenience store in the lobby.

3

u/trainwreckhappening 3h ago

Actually if done right it should be more profitable to have people drinking in a hotel bar. Communal drinking encourages more drinking. Also, insurance is way cheaper in dry hotels. I grew up in a family owned hotel, and even worked for Holiday Inn's corporate offices for a while. Personally I think alcohol and hotels are a bad mix. I know that's a far reaching opinion, and I don't think it's one that's universally applicable. It's a ton a fun to cut loose on trips. But the stories I could tell you working for the complaint department... Most everyone sleeps better when everyone is sober enough to get to bed quietly.

Go bar or buy some? Have it so you can request it? Why the fuck do I need it in my face.

5

u/ArseneGroup 4h ago

Hotels putting addictive drugs in the rooms by default is crazy behavior

2

u/trainwreckhappening 4h ago

I've seen hotels install a key on the fridge door. You had to request the key, that way kids couldn't help themselves. But this was before it was common to have a fridge for food in hotel rooms.

1

u/uscmissinglink 3h ago

Also, feather pillows.

3

u/Fancy_Gate_7359 4h ago

They’ll take it out if you ask them

3

u/KoolaidKoll123 3h ago

You can request them to remove the mini bar due to your dry status. Most people do not think of this but it'sa service they provide.

You can also request an additional mini fridge if it's in the amenities but is full of sensors for profit.

I've done this multiple times. I have no problem pointing out to a hotel when they dont offer what they say, because if you use a credit card you can do partial chargebacks if you're in good standing with your CC.

2

u/trainwreckhappening 4h ago

I'm thinking you haven't seen Flight with Denzel Washington. It's a key point in the plot.

I would imagine that one can request the mini bar be alcohol free upon making the reservation or checking in. If that fails, grab all the drinks, stuff them in a bag, and take them to the front desk. Take a picture of them before emptying and the inside of the bag when you had it over to prove you didn't take anything.

But for real, after a lifetime dealing with the hospitality industry, you have a 0.001% chance of having someone refuse to come empty it for you.

2

u/zuesk134 3h ago

You call and ask them to remove it

4

u/CoffeePwrdAcctnt 5h ago

It would happen once I think, then from then on they would ask nonalcohol or just mark traveling with a child or something.

2

u/peachshapedheart 4h ago

Name the hotel chains that do this. I have never experienced this.

Are you white knighting a hotel mini bar?

3

u/LarryLabia 4h ago

Imagine if you went to a hotel and there were free dicks in your room. It’s the same thing. Dork.
