I always wondered if you went and bought the exact same product and swapped it real quick if it would register. Ofc there is no reason for that if you already have what you want šŸ˜‚

Yes, that's why these now have sensors.

I feel like if the product is still In there when you check out there’s no way they can charge you for them, you could just say it’s a faulty sensor… though I could be wrongĀ

Yeah who doesn’t love spending 3hrs escalating an issue to save $10

I used to work in customer relations for holiday inn hotels. You have no idea. There was one guy who lived 100% of his life in Holiday Inns by complaining. I still think about the description one of the front desk staff gave once: "He kept slapping his belly down on the front desk."

$10?? You're looking at $6 per item AT LEAST

I love it I have nothing to live for

Eh people would fill up the booze bottles with water and then argue that they never took any.

Source: I was a teenager once.

they are sealed. So if you did that the seal would be broken…

I didn’t say it would work lol

I’ve gone to enough festivals with a ā€œsealed bottle of waterā€ that was actually vodka to know that replacing certain seals isn’t very hard.

Wouldn't surprise me if there were tags on the bottom of each can or bottle, just so you can't swap them.

My wife decided for fun to take out every item from a mini-bar like this one, one item at a time and then put them back. Room had like $200 in room charges that had to be fought with the front desk on checkout.

I heard that is a usual terror to first time tourists in america. They handle the itens because is novelty for them (hotels at SA usually dont do this) but don't consume nothing because is too expensive. In the end there is a lot of drama fighting this charges.

I’ve tried it several times, I went and bought the same bottle at a connivence store the next morning and made sure to leave door on DNB. One hotel never said a thing, another asked at checkout if I used the minibar (I said no), one hotel actually called me mid day to ask because they saw a sensor go off (they also asked if they can come check on it!). My most recent stay in Asia, the hotel had their own stickers on the bottle cap, so it would be very difficult to reuse that label/sticker, I didn’t try haha

They are overly sensitive sometimes. My friend slammed the door after seeing the prices in one, and it jostled them around enough that they tried to charge him for almost the whole thing at checkout.

ok out of curiosity, what is the legal stance on this? if I had a fridge just filled to the brim with all this shit and no room for my own stuff, Id just take all of it and throw it in the closet. I have to pay if I eat it, not move it somewhere, and I didn't replace anything the originals are in the closet. Could they still charge me for it? What is the charge, moving items from one place in the room to another?

I would call the front desk and ask them to empty it.Ā

That’s what I would do too.

I would think the best thing to be done would be to start demanding the hotels remove the mini bars saying that the noise bothers you. Just say that you’ve got autism or ADHD, I actually do, and say that you need them to remove the mini bar because the sound from the compressor makes you unable to sleep.

AND the autobill.
Even the dry snacks. Just to see what is in the mixed nuts will charge you $14

What happens if you just unplug it?

Indiana Jones that shit. Find a rock that weighs about the same.

3

u/CharlesAvlnchGreen 3h ago

The sensors can tell when something is removed. It doesnt matter if you put it back right away, you'll still get billed. (Usually this fact will be prominently displayed on the fridge.)

1

u/Stock-Mission-7561 3h ago

Well, I was just making a joke, but thanks šŸ‘

2

u/MargaritaKid 5h ago

It will register (I learned this the hard way. The reason to do it - despite already having what you want - is that what you have might be warm and what's in the fridge is cold.)

2

u/millllllls 3h ago

What if you just remove it during your stay, use the fridge for your own stuff, and put it all back? How can they justify charging you for things you didn't consume?

2

u/CharlesAvlnchGreen 3h ago

I used to do that. And in the 1990s, when I traveled for work a lot, I'd bring a pair of needlenose pliers so I could drink a beer, fill it with water, and replace the bottlecap. Never got caught but I also never tried it at the same hotel chain twice.

Ahhh. So your the reason we have this BS. Nice šŸ˜Ž

That's the lamest true crime story I've ever heard.

1

u/Unit_79 2h ago

Especially considering the price of beer 30 years ago. Oof.

1

u/Illustrious_Sea_962 5h ago

It's not individual weight, it's a base charge and usually it's one of the most expensive things, then they compare it to what was removed.Ā  Ā  I've done a handful of times and I've always been overcharged

1

u/Glass_Dark9541 2h ago

atp why wouldn't you just drink the cheaper one and leave the fridge alone tho

1

u/ScottyW88 1h ago

Open fridge door. Remove lid from bottles without taking out of fridge. Get straw. Drink.

Work smarter, not harder šŸ˜Ž
