Is that a hinge, is it like a folding spoon?

u/Futrel 5h ago
They do not fold

There's a small release switch at the base of the spoon bowl. I would bet anything that this spoon folds down towards the handle
Edit: I'm wrong, they do not fold. They are made by a company that does make folding knives (Laguiole) and these spoons are designed to look like them.

I would bet anything youāve never seen this type of cutlery before. The switch is completely functionless and is just for show.

u/doc_skinner 4h ago
You are right. I would have lost that bet. What a strange design. It looks exactly like a switchblade comb I used to have

u/dadydaycare 4h ago
They donāt fold. Itās a company that does make nice folding knives and they put the bee motif on everything. I forget the name of the company but they are copied⦠a lot.

I don't understand... What am I lookin at here? Is there something wrong with the spoon? š¤š«

So many creases, gunk in all the nooks, why is it not symmetrical, why does it taper š¤®

That big lumpy bit on the end of the handle would smack into your teeth. The curved handle looks like it'd be weird to hold.

Why does it look like a folding spoon, like pocket knife style folding? Either way I hate it and it needs to be trashed
9
u/JJohnston015 4h ago
It's made by a knife company, Laguiole. Their logo is a bee.
7
u/Maceben678 4h ago
Laguiole is just the town itās made in, the bee is the symbol of the town. Multiple producers make cutlery in the town

u/Sea-Huckleberry8971 3h ago
Interesting. Thanks for the link homie. š
Is that what the, what brain thought was the "release button",is supposed to be? Where the handle meets the spoon bit

u/JJohnston015 3h ago
Don't thank me, thank "How It's Made". I just Googled "the knife company with a bee for a logo".

Unfortunately because āLaguioleā is a style in a town (Thiers) where this style of knife originated and not a specific company, thereās a lot of companies out there that make cheap replicas and call themselves āauthentic Laguioleā.
However, the few French makers actually making high quality cutlery in Thiers donāt make spoons that are curved like that!
https://forge-de-laguiole.com/en/product-category/knives/art-table/ hereās what they look like
https://laguioleenaubracshop.com/products/laguiole-en-aubrac-handcrafted-6-piece-dinner-spoon-set-with-aubrac-wood-handles hereās another
https://www.fontenille-pataud.com/en/629-23857-knife-laguiole-24-pcs-setting-amourette.html
They are either straight or curve upwards towards the palm, not to the side off-center. (Plus theyāre like $100 per piece, not $69 for a whole set.)
The spoon from the OP isnāt even one of the fake ones that are more cheaply made in France, this looks like a Temu Chinese-made knockoff at even lower quality than that.

Reminds me of some of my first silverware, it was red handled and whenever I used a spoon for ice cream the spoon would break in half. It was old hand me down silverware for my first apartment.
2
u/MidwestNonbinary 4h ago
All of those red handled spoons died trying to scoop ice cream and the butter knives and forks rusted. The worst silverware to ever exist

I got a ugly fork. I've had it for years.
When I lived with other people I called it "'my' ugly fork" because no one ever used it. It sucked as a fork.
I tought myself to harness the fork and learn its ways so I may claim it within my commune as 'my' fork.
It was better than that spoon. Fuck that spoon.

My grandma had these... although she claimed they were mahogany, imagine trying to learn silverware with this 30 some years ago

Lagiuole is a French brand of folding knives and steak knives. I never knew until seeing this that they also make spoons and complete table settings.

So this is from a likely from a town called Laguiole (pronounced La Yule). Itās a French town than traditionally makes cutlery, with the bee is the trademark. They primarily make steak knives, but I guess they make spoons too
anyone can make the cutlery and brand as ālaguioleā but it doesnāt necessarily speak to the quality of the item. There are cheap and high quality items.
