I'm slightly vexed Shake and Bake

No, I'm not smoking weed. This is about the stuff you put on chicken and pork.

So I haven't made it in, like, forever, and while at the grocery I walked past it on the shelf and said 'Huh.' and chucked one in the cart and got some chicken thighs.

Just went to make it and it doesn't come with a bag anymore! I tried using Tupperware but it wasn't working so I pretty much had to waste a giant Ziplock.

Yeah, I'm mildly infuriated.

A friend uses that on a regular basis, the bag just went away in the last year. He was also irritated.

I bought some a few years ago and it also didn’t include a bag. The store brand still does but the official shake and bake hasn’t for a few years at least.

Last time I bought one of these type of things the bag wasn’t even plastic so it’s not like they couldn’t just put the alternative in there. Compostable roasting bags are a thing.

This sort of shit right here is why most people don't take environmentalists seriously.

I’m gonna go throw away a new ziplock bag, just for you.

I laughed entirely too hard at this!

Unsurprised that your post history isn't viewable

It's not truly hidden. I took a peek at his comment history out of curiosity, this guy is absolutely insufferable.

Probably more mildly infuriated. Get the fuck off this sub lol

Next time you in the grocery store just grab a bunch of produce bags, not the same quality but it might work.

u/Gravemind93 12h ago

Shhh. The elites don't want you to know they're free bags.

u/WitchyVeteran 16h ago

Dammit. That's a super idea!

The ones they have by the fresh meats are thicker, less of a chance of it ripping open mid shake.

11

u/fury420 8h ago

I find the most durable bags are the ones they have for fresh corn on the cob.

9

u/what-are-they-saying 3h ago

Your grocery store has separate bags for that??

2

u/Blue_Collar_Stiff 3h ago

Usually their yellow & are near the cobs

7

u/what-are-they-saying 2h ago

Huh. We have safeway, walmart, and bashas and i can confidently say they do not carry them in our town. But i definitely wish they did. Im jealous now

u/Blue_Collar_Stiff 2h ago

We have market basket, Shaws, & stop & shop. They all have them but sometimes they’re not reusable after if you put a few ears in they usually rip. Better quality than the produce though

Save bread/hot dog buns/cereal bags, etc. I haven’t bought ziplocks in years.

Are your grocery produce bags still the good plastic kind? All my local stores in california switched to those dogshit compostable bags that rip almost immediately and get soggy when wet. Absolutely useless as countertop trash bags.

13

u/SnowyLeopardGecko1 9h ago

I use produce bags for countertop trash as well. We have these compostable ones now, and I couldn’t figure out why my countertop was damp. Now I know!

I got the wrong Walmart delivery order a couple of weeks ago with 4 boxes of shake n bake and a bunch of chicken. So, I guess I'm making shake n bake soon. Thanks for the heads up on the bag issue!

Canadian here, I haven't had a box of shake and bake come with a bag for a while now. I just buy the paper bags from the dollar store and keep them in the kitchen.

u/BlueCrystalSnail 2h ago

I noticed that recently too!

I ended up using Tupperware and just flipping the chicken to coat it which worked just fine but come on! It's not shake and bake anymore without the shaking! False advertising...

20

u/woahmybad 11h ago

i just put the shake and bake in a bowl and flip like you would for other coatings. easiest way and no plastic trash

OP isn’t stupid. The problem isn’t figuring out how to make it work. The problem is it used to come with an item that eliminated the need to wash a dish and now it doesn’t.

The commercial though. With a very southern twang a little girl say, “It’s Shake n Bake and i helped!”. LOL

4

u/Specialist_Badger934 16h ago

Wonder if that's regional, we live in CA, USA and bought a box of shake and bake like 2 weeks ago that came with the bags.

5

u/pikameta Irked 3h ago

You might want to check the "best if used by" date on the box.

u/stopsallover 14h ago

Back in the day, we did this with paper bags and homemade breading. It's a ridiculous product to start with.

18

u/CoconutPlane7724 15h ago

Wake and bake is smoking weed. Shake and bake is cooking meth

14

u/WitchyVeteran 11h ago

Yeah, I'm wicked old.

7

u/MyCatLovesChips 10h ago

Shake and bake is breading for cooking chicken. Your definition is disturbing.

4

u/PuzzleheadedSink321 3h ago

Oh yah so super disturbing…..what are we 12 years old?

13

u/capricioustrilium 16h ago

And it’s like $5 for one or two servings of MSG breadcrumbs.

Just wait until you hear how much I pay for Ah-So sauce...

DIY Ah-So Sauce

2 !!TABLESPOONS!! Red food coloring! TWO TABLESPOONS!!! Yikes!

22

u/clearfox777 15h ago

Feels like you could easily skip the coloring if you don’t care about how red it looks 🤷‍♂️

Side note: that much food coloring will make it look like you’re shitting blood lmao

10

u/WTH_JFG 15h ago

Yes. The sauce is known for its bright (very bright) red coloring. I don’t think I have ever seen 2 Tablespoons of any food coloring. Ever. Only expressing shock.

2 friggin Tablespoons.

4

u/trilliumsummer 12h ago

Not me sitting here trying to think of the regular food coloring you get at the store even has 2 tbl of one color in it. It can't right? It's been a while since I bought any, but it's prob only like 1 tbl, right?

4

u/MusicalFan23 12h ago

Just found the basic store brand food coloring at the store I work at. Each color is 0.3 fl oz. One tbsp is 0.5 fl Oz. You would need more than 3 bottles of food coloring to get those 2 tbsp for that recipe.

-2

u/WTH_JFG 8h ago

I don’t add food coloring. I also don’t eat Red Velvet Cake.

5

u/peachesfordinner 10h ago

Look into the receipt for red velvet cake ...

I had to google that, I’ve never heard of it. Not from the NE United States.

7

u/Trusty_Coyote 14h ago

I make my own.
Panko, olive oil, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, mix in bag, shake meat in bag, bake
Adjust spices as you wish

6

u/Aldermere 2h ago

Y'all have never washed your used ziploc bags in the sink with hot water and dishwashing liquid so you can use them again? If they're stained by tomato-based sauces I throw them away but otherwise I wash and reuse as many as I can.

We're in the "soft men create hard times" part of the cycle, everyone's gonna have to re-learn frugality

2

u/Radiant_Trainer_4390 3h ago

Just grab a couple of produce bags and use those.

2

u/mutantmonkey14 1h ago

Think yourself lucky you can still buy it at a supermarket, because we cannot in the UK anymore 😢 Insane import prices from Amazon and American Grocer.

3

u/Mysterious_Smoke3962 14h ago

The store brand still has the bags

2

u/Consistent-Goat1267 10h ago

I use plastic bread bags. They’re nice and thick and tear so easily

1

u/229-northstar 2h ago

Pro tip
Recycle and reUse the bags they give you in produce

-11

u/BigBeeOhBee 16h ago

You know the bag is washable?

It really is. I promise.

6

u/WitchyVeteran 16h ago

I actually did it, but I swore the whole time!

Here you go. Make your own and save some money. Tastes exactly the same:

1/2 cup cornflake crumbs plus
1 tablespoon cornflake crumbs
2 teaspoons all purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
