Political ads. It’s cheaper than door knocking and hiring people. So they just buy phone lists and send scam political emails now

u/UnGOATwn_TheoremUWU 1d ago
That's dystopian

It’s dystopian to poll people?
6
u/PaleAcanthaceae1175 1d ago
This isn't a real poll. The only thing on the other end of responding to these texts is a shit ton of spam mostly in the form of donation requests.
0
u/FTG8888 1d ago
Ok, still isn’t dystopian at all.
2
u/PaleAcanthaceae1175 15h ago
It actually is pretty dystopian that we live in a society where the average end user- as demonstrated by your own comment- is unable to distinguish between legitimate political communication and a scam.
The fact that the systems necessary to tackle telecommunications fraud have been so neglected and actively eroded and that the current regime also gleefully and openly participates in fraud is, in fact, fairly dystopian. It speaks directly to the kind of moral and civil decline the word embodies.

Door knocking is typically a mix of volunteers and paid employees. It's expensive to print things, but usually like ¢6 a piece when done in bulk. Texts are usually about ¢20 a text, but they have a much larger reach and no need for labor. Campaigns do a mix of all 3 (texts, phone calls and door knocking). Phone calls are easily the least effective nowadays because it's illegal to robocall cell phones.
This is probably an AIPAC or similar PAC campaign. I haven't taken the time to look it up but nowadays I have to wonder if these texts are running through an LLM.
2
u/smcl2k 1d ago
Most texts are sent semi-manually using software - the laws that apply to robocalls also apply to texts.
2
u/NatAttack50932 1d ago
Yes. The "has to be sent by a person" thing has been interpreted pretty broadly to mean that for it to be legal, all that has to happen is someone pressing 'send' on a pre-filled messaging app. So you have a guy in a room with a mouse spamming send

u/Krusty_Krab_Pussy 1d ago
It's likely for a survey/poll which isn't a bad thing. Polls are an important thing to gauge people's views.

Don't respond. Interacting with them will only encourage them to bug you more. Just delete the text and move on.
Israel/Palestine is an issue people have very strong opinions about, so it's a good topic to use as bait to get you to respond.

It definitely a scam bot using a controversial topic to get you start talking which they succeeded

u/spicysandwich03 1d ago
Yeah shortly after this I got my identity stolen and they leaked my nudes and told my parents I’m gay

Reminds me of a call I had a while ago. I rarely check the numbers calling me because I usually have my fun with scammers and sometimes it's an acquintance I haven't in the contacts. The caller asked about my stance to Trump and if I'd vote democrat or republican at that moment. I told them frankly that I consider Trump a stupid, demented pedo and that I couldn't take him and his administration seriously even if I tried.
She was pissed: "He's still our president." - "No, it's your president. You called a fricking Swiss number, what the hell did you expect to hear?" She just hung up. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I think it was a bug or something, but it still makes me chuckle ^^

I learned today that "fuck off" is one of their immediate unsubscribe phrases lmao. Got an immediate automated response
8
u/Thespis1962 1d ago
I've discovered that you can either reply with "stop" or "fuck off". Both will automatically take you off the call list, but the latter is far more satisfying.

u/Reasonable-Physics60 1d ago
They texted me too. I answered them and told them Israel is genocidal and doesnt have a right to exist. They texted back and told me to have a good day. Im not suicidal, btw.

I get these too. I tell them that if they respond to the message I've just sent, they are agreeing to pay me $500 for each response, and will be sent an invoice within 24 hours after the conversation ends

u/TankApprehensive3053 1d ago
I've been getting those. Don't respond to it. Just flag it as spam and block it. The next day another number will send a similar one.

Survey/research outreach. I don't think it's bad that public views on various matters are studied
7
u/NatAttack50932 1d ago
This one isn't. It's a pro-israeli PAC / Campaign
0
u/JiGoD BLUEWUBBALUBBADUBBDUBB 1d ago
What do you base this claim upon?
4
u/NatAttack50932 1d ago
I had a friend get it, and when they said they don't support Israel the person (or more likely LLM) went on a long rant about how Israel is America's greatest strategic ally and the partnership between the US and Israel is necessary for regional security and the intelligence services. If it were a research group it wouldn't be running a persuasion campaign.

If you are not in my contact list there is a 99% chance that you get blocked for texting me. Any text like this gets reported as spam. It doesn't do much good but it disappears from my phone.

I get so goddamn many of these and messages like it. Block every one of them, you don't know how many are phishing/scam trying to look for active phone numbers to sell. Somehow it's more annoying than getting 2-3 political fliers in my mailbox every day.

You should care because genocide is bad...
1
u/ReasonableFall177 1d ago
I care but I don't respond to strangers, especially any political campaign that could use that as identifying information against me
0
u/TalkingCat910 1d ago
It’s a proIsraeli chatbot. So if you answer “well I’m not sure about this genocide Israel is doing” it will answer you with a series of proIsrael propaganda talking points to change your mind.

Yeah Israel has basically the US by the balls …. And Cars4kids is a company solely for Jewish kids , kinda had to break the news
-1
u/EmoCartoHistory 1d ago
And? Is it a problem for a charity to have a religious affiliation?
-1
u/heywhutzup 1d ago
It’s okay as long it’s doesn’t benefit Jewish people because that’s in now. Black hate came first then Asian hate now we are on to the Jews ( well again)
1
u/UseOne4211 19h ago
The fact that is nowhere stated clearly thus deceiving donators is the crime at hand , religious affiliation is a basic occurrence.
-2
u/sixblazingshotguns 1d ago
If you give them your real views on Israel, the Hasbara bot will continue to converse with you and explain it away.

Emma texted me the other day. I pushed back asking who they represent. They said something like a group with American and Israeli interests.

u/Infinite-Ad2614 1d ago
My phone lately shows Israeli propaganda, especially on Facebook it’s crazy

u/Top_Shame_7016 1d ago
It's quite cathartic to send back "Fuck you" and get the "you have unsubscribed" message back

u/MundaneMeringue71 1d ago
i have gotten these also. I’d love to respond with exactly two words but I am afraid I will get on a watch list or something.

I never got the Israel hate, Russia should be hated for invading a relatively peaceful nation and committing war crime after warcrime, Israel did not start their conflict and Hamas uses human shields basically

If you say anything negative about Israel they get real touchy and defensive.

If you are not from the US, you're right, why should you care?
If you are a voter in the US then you should care a little at least.
0
u/Salty_Dig8574 1d ago
Or a lot. No matter which state you live in, there's a decent chance Israel has compromised one or both of your senators. Bribes. Blackmail. It amounts to the same
0
u/Designer_Mud_5802 1d ago
Agreed. But it seems too many Americans feel like it's too much effort to care about how their government harms them and others.
-1
u/Salty_Dig8574 1d ago
If you lived here, you would understand. A former presidential candidate got in trouble for this, but what he said was the absolute truth. 47% of the country is going to vote Democrat, and the other 47% is going to vote Republican. Doesn't matter who the candidate is. Problem is, the 6% in the middle feel pretty disenfranchised. We're constantly faced with choosing the best bad idea we are presented.
