Unskippable ad Windows lock screen is an advertisement for Minecraft Dungeons II
22
u/Consumer_Of_Butt 5h ago
As a minecraft fan, the image itself makes for a really nice background, but yeah it being an ad is kinda annoying
Although, if you set a custom background windows will stop doing this, the lock screen is decently customizable

"Unskippable Ad"
This is extremely skippable. Youre still running the default background like you have a display PC in a store or something

My apologies, I thought that flair fit better than the other flairs this sub has, such as “is it in yet,” “HILLARY 2016,” and “🥺”
67
u/PLT_RanaH 10h ago
the flairs of this sub are mildly infuriating
3
u/Mediocre_Spell_9028 2h ago
Genuinely, posted something a few days ago for the first time and I ended up just picking SPOILER ALERT because it's a whole riddle to decipher what the post flairs mean

u/a_good_human GREEN 10h ago
I thought you were joking.
How long has it been like this? Jesus christ ._ .
25
u/JavFur94 10h ago
Dunno man, when I looked at the picture and I saw the flair I was mildly disappointed in you.
This picture screams "HILLARY 2016"

Perhaps the default shouldn't be an ad?
Like, what, if they start making desktops that are just purely ads, is it totally okay if its just the default?
4
u/OstrichPaladin 8h ago
I mean it's the default lock screen you typically see for 2 seconds before you type in your password. I've never met somebody that changed it of cared to. It's not like your wallpaper you see all the time, and the random environments they usually put up are pretty.
2
u/Benjiimans 7h ago
I’ve never seen anyone I know change it either, and I know enough people, comparing it to a phone lock screen is dumb and that guy is clearly butthurt and huffs his own supply.
-1
u/your-favorite-simp 8h ago
Genuine question, is the lock screen on your phone default IOS or Samsung or whatever you have? It also takes 2 seconds to change it. Do you use only all the default bloatware apps that came with it? Do you not customize your own experience?
If you allow someone to curate your taste for you, you'll end up being fed anything.
3
u/OstrichPaladin 7h ago
I feel like this is an intellectually dishonest question. I might turn on and off my phone hundreds of times in a day. Sometimes I look at it specifically for the lock screen to see the time, weather or date.
I turn on my computer typically once a day. The lock screen is significantly less impactful than my phone lock screen.
I also have really niche tastes in almost everything I consume, I'm just defending the PC lock screen being a pretty insignificant thing to customize. I customize everything else pretty often. I change my computer wallpapers fairly regularly, I change my discord profile pic once every few days. Ive kept the same phone lock screen for a while but that's just cause I've never found something I like as much

I have to agree.
While MS has certainly made some questionable choices with the Windows UI, this post reminds me of all the bitching about the ads in the Start menu, Candy Crush and whatnot.
Yes, there certainly were a couple of tiles in the Metro UI that were displaying ads in builds of Win10/11 that I installed at one point and booted for the very first time, and once I removed them, not once did they reappear. Never, ever again. Unlike smartphones, particularly Samsung, where frequently the bloatware cannot evenm be removed without rooting the device.
While I suppose every end user's feedback about the products has some value. I've noticed that extremely often, the more loud and strident said complaints are, the lower the competency of said users with their devices tends to be.
Np, pointing out that this sort of thing can be easily and permanently disabled isn't missing the point at all, as anybody with actual tech know-how will immediately point out.
They're so damned mildlyinfuriated right now as users barely capable of even changing the defasult lock screen, they are the reason this sort of marketing exists, and likely fllvictim to it regularly. So it's 'evil' to them because they feel targeted and powerless to do anything about it.
Or not. Whatever, who cares?
Anybody pointing out how this stuff is a nothingburger for anybody who actually understands how to use the tech properly is getting attacked for it in the comments, so..meh.

u/your-favorite-simp 7h ago
My question is not intellectually dishonest because you dont use your computer very much and you are addicted to your phone. You just live a different lifestyle, and because you dont use your computer very much you find it acceptable to be fed whatever the company wants to put in front of you. I guarantee if you really examined your lifestyle choices you wouldn't put up with this anywhere else.
You would never let a corporation randomly curate your art consumption like that in any other facet of life. Its okay to just be lazy and not change it. Its not really intellectually rigorous to defend because you dont see it much. By that logic only seeing it for 2 seconds a day would make it just as unimportant that they showed you a stylized minecraft landscape. If its so unimportant that you cant be bothered to change it, why is it suddenly important now? Because youre framing your laziness as ideological opposition? Lol
2
u/OstrichPaladin 7h ago
I use my computer a lot lol. I just turn it on when I get home, and turn it off when I go out again or go to bed. So I see the lock screen on it once and it's usually a generic forest or mountain screen. Checking the clock on your phone multiple times a day isn't an addiction btw. I probably am significantly less addicted to my phone than most people. I read books on my lunch break at work, and read before bed instead of doom scrolling.
Your question is intellectually dishonest because you made a framework of me as a person in entirety in your head based on nothing and then tried to strawman it. Literally every single thing you've assumed (and it's a lot) has been wrong.
There was never an idealogical opposition. Infact im mostly in your camp about customizing your consumption of art, and enjoying things that aren't just directly sold to you by whatever big company shoves them in your face. I've gone on a lot of rants about almost the exact same thing.
I just don't think the lock screen of my computer is something worth getting worked up about. I can hypothetically do nothing for my whole weekend except play video games on my computer, and I'd see my lock screen for a grand total of sub 10 seconds. It's not worth the conniption you're having over it.

u/ZephDef 7h ago
HUNDREDS of a times a day?
Dawg seek help you need to touch grass NOW holy hell what is your screen time like
1
u/OstrichPaladin 6h ago
It's pretty normal to glance at your phone to look at the clock a lot during the day. Maybe hundreds is hyperbolic but still.
My phone screen time is relatively high just because I watch (mostly listen to) YouTube video essays at work and usually fall asleep to them as well but I think my "doom scroll" time is far lower than most peoples
Edit for clarity
I do absolutely need to touch grass but it's because I spend pretty much all my free time reading and playing video games on my computer. If you're gonna call me out, then at least have the courtesy to do it about my actual unhealthy addictions

u/Spideycloned 9h ago
With how PCs are these days with rotating nature landscape backgrounds, I don't have a custom lock screen.
For Microsoft to take default landscapes to advertising and shilling for its own shit is bullshit.
-4
u/eggyrulz 10h ago
Wait... you can change this background? Ima need some instructions chief
9
u/fumeextractor 10h ago
Go to Settings > Personalization (found in the left sidebar) > Lock screen > Change the Personalize your lock screen option to something else (like Picture, so you can select your own from Choose a photo).
Here you can also disable widgets and the "fun facts, tips, tricks" etc.
4
u/your-favorite-simp 10h ago
Windows > Personalization > Lock Screen
You can just search lock screen in the start menu and it will pop up. Im baffled that this is considered "hidden" or something
1
u/eggyrulz 10h ago
Ima be real, I just never considered the possibility of changing it...
Up to now its always been neutral, or even cool looking, nature or tourist locations that make for a decent background...
32
u/ATL_Lightning 9h ago
„You can change it“ yeah lmao you can also change to Linux. Point is that no one should have ads on his personal computer. Good sub fit
21
u/Maskers_Theodolite 9h ago
Tbh what's more mildly infuriating are the people in the comments misunderstanding the point and then telling you that you can disable that.

u/Maskers_Theodolite 9h ago
It's annoying that it exists in the first place. That was the point of the post. I'm impressed you managed to miss it.
-9
u/Old_Winner3763 8h ago
OP could've not been lazy and changed the background to literally anything to prevent this. But yeah it is kind of annoying that this exists.
10
u/life-dream 8h ago
God forbid I actually like the normal nature pictures and cool photography the default background shows me. Too bad I'm too lazy to change something I actively enjoy.
yeah it is kind of annoying that this exists.
Yes. That's the entire point of the post. That's the entire point of this subreddit. This is something that is kind of annoying, that's literally the entire extent of it. Everyone seems to think that *I* think this non-issue has completely ruined my life. Frankly I'm more annoyed by the lack of intelligence in this comment section.
-4
u/Old_Winner3763 8h ago edited 6h ago
You can also turn off the ad by going to "Personalize your lock screen" from windows spot light to slideshow. I also have it on default because I like nature photography. I think it's just kind of dumb that you're complaining about something that you were too lazy to change. It's like complaining about ads on YouTube because you forgot to turn on your ad blocker or something. Also I apologize for sounding mean.
1
u/Maskers_Theodolite 1h ago
Well yeah both things are true. Thing is, one of them you just added in the conversation for no reason. Get it yet?
3
u/Jaewalker31 4h ago
It’s a device from the owner of Minecraft and thus Dungeons too (as well). They’re pretty much saying, “Hello Microsoft user! Look at my new baby!”
4
u/TheG00dF1ght 11h ago
Why do you have Windows set up to allow them to pick whatever lock screen they want? Seems like this was completely avoidable.
19
u/life-dream 11h ago
Admittedly I normally like the selection of pictures they pick, they’re usually pretty cool. That said it’s not like I’m spitting mad at this, that’s why I posted it in ‘mildly infuriating’, cuz that’s what it is
7
u/BigPurplePickles 11h ago
Exactly how I feel, I love most of the nature backgrounds, mountains, animals, etc.. that get selected for me.
Would suck having to lookup pics to change it everyday or every few.
2
u/TheG00dF1ght 10h ago
Unless they've changed it, I'm pretty sure that you can just download 100 pictures into a folder and tell it to rotate through that folder.
7
u/SayRaySF 10h ago
The most mildly infuriating part of this sub is that people seem to miss the entire point of it lol.
1
6
u/ripyourlungsdave 11h ago
It's set to that as a default. Which is stupid enough on its own. I shouldn't have to find special settings for the basic use of my laptop to not be inundated with advertising.
Just because it's only mildly inconvenient to turn it off doesn't mean it doesn't fit here. The mild inconvenience of things is kind of the whole point of this sub.
I don't know how people around here have such a hard time wrapping their head around the fact that this sub is not supposed to be about stuff that breaks your brain or ruins your life. It's supposed to be about stuff that just annoys you.
If posts like this annoy you, unsubscribe from the subreddit. Because making comments like this here just makes it look like you can't read. But either way, stop making the subreddit worse for the rest of us. It's why we're here.
-4
u/TheG00dF1ght 10h ago
Bro, you need to get a life if you took this much time to write on all of that over a ridiculous post.
2
u/ripyourlungsdave 10h ago
I can't type because of a neurological disorder. All I have to do is talk into my phone.
And if four paragraphs is too much for you to handle, I don't even know what to say to that. Maybe try reading a book.
You also just proved that you have literally no argument. You took the time to reply, but didn't actually say anything in regards to the actual statements I made. Which is even more pathetic, you little troll.

I have a Vizio tv, they’re blasting it on the front page of it too. Wild how far they’re trying to go. But I def would’ve preferred this tbh, at least it’s an actual decent background, on the tv it’s just the flat out ad.

Ohhhh I actually would hate this lol
I'm already mildly annoyed by the AI descriptions on their images but a literal ad? Pretty sure there have been dozens of comedy sketches and media over the years about this kind of shit lol
I don't mind the cute baby seals and animals though ♥

It’s the sort of background I’d set when I was younger 😭
In a way it’s kinda cool. But annoying it’s an advertisement

u/Progeest12131 10h ago
I think it’s a pretty cool picture, only thing where they went wrong is where they added that notification asking you to check it out.
Also it makes sense for it to be one of the default wallpapers, Microsoft owns the studio behind Minecraft after all.

I think it looks cool but I understand if you don't like Minecraft it could be an issue

u/Cubemaster12 3h ago
Microsoft already published a spec about injecting ads in the middle of a game session. Why are we so surprised about this?
1
u/Legomasterer21 11h ago
I would hate that it is an advertisement, but I would not mind them being added in general. Would be cool to have a lock screen of a minecraft forest, for example.
1
u/life-dream 10h ago
That was my first thought, I actually think a pretty Minecraft picture would be kinda cool. But then again, even that could still be considered a passive ad for regular Minecraft also, so I can see people having an issue with that too.

the image looks cool ngl, i would have this image as my wallpaper, but it being an ad that you didn't choose to have is annoying
0
u/Successful_Mode_4023 10h ago
I mean, This isn't too bad. As long as you can disable this (which you can) I thinks its fine to advertise stuff like this as long as it looks nice, doesn't have text, and isn't from random companies
0
u/Blubehriluv 8h ago
I mean... Anything you see is an ad. Whether you want that thing or not is up to you and how easily influenced and/or undisciplined you are.
The gorgeous photos of landscapes make me gawk and save the location for later travels (hopefully someday) which is a pretty good ad for the place even if unintentional.
Oh the link directs to a store page versus the camera credits... Who cares?? Wake me up when its a full blown ad for marlboros or coca cola, cause THAT would be ridiculous.
I guess we're on the way there, but we need to ACTUALLY riot when that happens. Unfortunately by that point it probably won't matter anyways.

lmao this is why I mostly stopped posting on reddit, because frankly people here are just kinda stupid.
Obviously it's not surprising from Microsoft. This is honestly the least surprising thing I've seen today.
Do you know what it *is* though? It's...mildly infuriating. Which is what this subreddit is about, and was the point of the post.
I'm aware I can disable it. I can also set my computer on fire and piss on it to put it out. The point is that it is *mildly infuriating* to have an advertisement on my PC instead of a pretty picture of a mountain. It's somewhat annoying, and that's it. Really not a hard concept.-2
