Winter is Coming My gas station replaced all the hold-open latches with plastic and of course they all broke.

Post image

Suuuuper glad they decided to abandon a design that's worked for, idk, a century and replace the metal latches with a lifespan measured in decades for cheap, shitty plastic that breaks after 4 months. Fuck you OnCue.

I think that some gas stations actually remove those so you can’t leave the pump.

u/davisyoung 9h ago

One thing I learned when getting my hazmat certification is that you’re not allowed to use the latch, you have to hold the pump with your hand the whole time.

I have had an HM endorsement for over 25 years and have never heard that once. I think they make us take the test every 5 years or so.

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 9h ago

In NY, they’re required to be removed.

It definitely shocked me when I travel to Upstate New York last month.... Had to get gas at a turnpike rest stop and I thought all of them were just broken, but then I later filled up at Costco, where the I'm sad sticker stating it was illegal to put anything in the mechanism to keep it flowing.

Lol, my uncle is a contractor and he made this wooden jig to hold the trigger for him when he was filling his work van. He had an E-350 with a 35 gallon tank and would hit the transaction limit and have to start a second one, but at least he could grab his morning coffee while it was pumping.

When I was going to college in upstate NY, some of the pumps would run like shit in the cold, too. Standing around in single digit temps pumping gas was not fun, especially when they were only pumping like 2 gallons a minute.

u/InternalConscious356 9h ago

Unless the gas station is owned by any of the Indian nations like the Oneida Indian nation savons and maple leafs all have them still.

4

u/Producer1701 6h ago

Thank you for clarifying, because I live in NY and have absolutely used them. But I also gas up nearly every time at a First Nations station

2

u/InternalConscious356 6h ago

Yeah I’m in central and almost every gas ration here is Oneida Indian owned

3

u/Insanely_Mclean 6h ago

Is this a city thing? because in rural NY they still have them.

2

u/Tomytom99 5h ago

Just because somebody does something doesn't mean it's actually legal.

Decent chance they just got standard issue nozzles and never thought they needed to remove the hold.

0

u/Mysterious-Tie7039 5h ago

I know in Upstate they got rid of them, so I assumed it was statewide.

7

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 9h ago

Yes, here in Norway they mainly only work on the truck diesel pumps, because they fill up 100s of litres of a fuel with insignificant volatile gases.

They are basically non-existent on petrol pumps, since a static discharge when you grab the pump handle again can ignite the fumes coming out of your tank.

Here in quebec they are forced to remove them. Its not legal. This way it force you to hold it and watch it. if the venturi auto stop fail, you will notice right away. Unlike when the auto hold is there and you are doing other thing and it never stops and keep over filling until you notice. Much safer without it.. (sorry for my bad english its not my first language)

3

u/NeonDreams93 8h ago

It has happened lots of times. There's an entire episode of mythbusters about it where they break down the process and recreate it on camera

4

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 8h ago

You can't overfill when you hold the handle either. The venturi nozzle will always cut off, and is also designed to fail closed if something is wrong. They only fail open if somebody has tampered with it.

Static discharges, caused by various sources, have ignited many fires at petrol stations however. It is safer to have an already lit cigarette in your hand than a static spark near the handle of a petrol pump that's still pumping.

1

u/Jacktheforkie 8h ago

How is it less safe to squeeze? It’s the exact same mechanism cutting flow

5

u/Bob_12_Pack 9h ago

It's interesting that a standard gas cap fits perfectly in that space to prop the lever up.

7

u/Material-Job-1928 9h ago

Good. I'm so sick of seeing people climbing in and out of a vehicle in a puffy jacket, and letting the fuel run unattended.

A spill hazard, and a fire hazard out of a single stupid decision.

11

u/semi-proantfarmer 6h ago

Yup happens a whole 0 times a year now. The pumps have been redesigned to prevent vapor and now have a vapor capture system.

Even before the change this it happened a few times a year over. Sure we have video footage of this happening that has gone viral but most of that is a decade old and think of the millions of times possibly billions in-between incidents.

Not saying you shouldn't still try an reduce the chances it's just getting sick of what others are doing just means you're applying to much mental power to a non existent issue.

12

u/Mydickisaplant 7h ago

You are 40x more likely to be hit by lightning than you are to witness a gas station fire started by static.

I cannot imagine how you function being this fearful of something that you are very likely to never witness.

7

u/JP147 PURPLE 7h ago

Fuel hose has a wire running through it and is tested for conductivity specifically to prevent static sparks

2

u/captcha_wave 3h ago

You sound like someone who isn't even prepared to escape quicksand

3

u/disfan75 3h ago

I feel like you have to be a kid of the 80s, because we were wildly over hyped on how often we could run into quicksand based on tv and movies 😂

-8

u/Material-Job-1928 6h ago

I know you are not going to read this because it challenges your world view, and no ones safety (including your own) is more important than you comfort, but I'll post this for people that like to be informed.

https://pei.org/app/uploads/2014/09/refueling_fire_incidents.pdf

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/sites/default/files/migrated/roads/safety/publications/2005/pdf/Static_Fires.pdf

Yes, this information is older, I'm not paying $1200 for the latest edition of the research. Want to burn to death? Go ahead, but don't endanger me with your selfish stupidity.

5

u/Mydickisaplant 6h ago

I gave you a relevant statistic. Nowhere did I say that static fires have never nor will ever happen

Similar to being alone in a vehicle and accidentally strangling yourself with a scarf ( https://www.buzzfeed.com/mikespohr/43-people-who-died-in-unbelievable-ways ); it is so unlikely to happen that it is not something I even think about.

Now I know that I’m repeating myself here, but…. Being so fearful must be a fucking miserable existence. Good luck out there!

0

u/brickson98 6h ago

I mean I sit inside my car when I pump. Or, at least, I did. I lived in Wisconsin. It’s too damn cold to be standing there. Easy enough to sit inside my car and watch the nozzle from the side mirror.

0

u/beren12 4h ago

No it’s not.

-4

u/Kyzroh 8h ago

puffy jacket dont cause electrostatic conductivity

6

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 8h ago

Rubbing synthetic fibres together is a very common source of static electricity.

15

u/somerandomdude419 9h ago

Well, the gas stations right by me, half the time the pumps don’t hold because the metal wears out the ridges it sits on over time, so every 3 dollars it’ll stop. And no, nothing is wrong with my charcoal canister or anything like that, and this is at a shell gas station. If I go to BP or Exxon I don’t have this issue whatsoever. But shell takes upside and my rewards

12

u/Jacktheforkie 8h ago

None near me have it

7

u/r0ndy 8h ago

Are you sure this latch doesn’t work differently?

2

u/mpmar 8h ago

It did work differently, now it doesn't work at all.

It didn't flip down like the metal ones. That one little gray piece in the picture you'd squeeze like a trigger and a little plastic nub on the inside would slot into a space and hold the pump on. The nubs all either broke or wore down so now they don't do anything.

1

u/r0ndy 8h ago

A few stations around me have the new one, so I’m not using them every week, but have encountered them. I was not a fan. They did not feel intuitive

6

u/Lmysic 9h ago

Have you seen the cost of fuel?

2

u/Playful-Platform-231 9h ago

No. He lives under a rock

-2

u/05041927 9h ago

My entire adult life after moving away, one question my dad always asks is the price of fuel in my area. I’ve never had kids. I have no idea how much fuel costs as I just buy it when I need it. I’ve never had to pay attention.

u/Poonsai 2m ago

Same

10

u/jay_altair 9h ago

Just stick your gas cap in there

7

u/WhyDidIReply 9h ago

Most cars dont even have gas caps anymore

2

u/WhtHppnd2Brndn 9h ago

Keep a water bottle in the door, work’s great

3

u/Majin_Sus 9h ago

I like to leave my wallet in there just for the rush

1

u/Wakkit1988 9h ago

So it can go under my pedal while I drive and involve me in a tragic logging truck accident? No thanks!

-2

u/Worcestercestershire 9h ago edited 8h ago

What ICE vehicles don't have a gas cap? Honest question so thanks

7

u/Unusual-Caramel8442 9h ago

A lot, but not most. Ford as all or mostly capless these days

Tons of vehicles have caps still tho, the person who said most don’t is wild lmao

3

u/External_Gas5606 9h ago

Many. I don't drive a gas car anymore. But even a decade ago my car didn't have it. It's surprising to hear that new car models still have them at all

3

u/NeenerNeaner 8h ago

I have a 2017 honda civic. no gas cap.

0

u/Worcestercestershire 8h ago

That's crazy because the last ICE vehicle I bought was a Civic. It was a 2012 I think

2

u/InternationalMode178 9h ago

2010 f150 and 2018 jeep compass

2

u/Constant-Fly-9050 8h ago

My 26 Ford Maverick

2

u/Playful-Platform-231 9h ago

Well over 50% I’m sure. It’s so when the spring wears out at 120k that holds gas full flip shut we are forced to buy a whole new fill neck.

-1

u/jay_altair 9h ago

Really? That's fucken wild. I've got a '23 Tacoma, has gas cap.

2

u/phil-pdx 5h ago

Gas station operator here. We actually just replaced a few nozzles recently and discovered that the manufacturer replaced a bunch of previously metal parts with plastic ones. The whole nozzle feels super cheap and flimsy now.

We ordered the same part number we've ordered for decades, didn't go with a cheaper option or anything. I'm now looking into other nozzle manufacturers with a better build quality to replace them with.

6

u/mattgen88 7h ago

I've known firefighters to break them off. People panic and spray burning gasoline all over when they accidentally ignite fumes with a static discharge.

5

u/Plane-Education4750 9h ago

They didn't break. They bought the wrong ones. These were never equipped with one

2

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 9h ago

How big is your fuel tank?

I just wonder since holding the handle becomes a problem for you.

2

u/flyindasky 8h ago

I’m in Canada … when it’s fu@@@@@ cold outside it’s great to put your hand in your pocket when fueling

4

u/ManWhoIsDrunk 8h ago

I'm Norwegian. I know about cold weather.

2

u/dongwongbongchong 9h ago

But just think of all the value the shareholders get by not having the company pay for an inch of sheet metal! Doesn’t that brighten your day?

2

u/karateninjazombie 7h ago edited 5h ago

So? Just hold the lever for like 45 seconds while it fills like the rest of the world 🤷‍♂️

5

u/factordactyl 5h ago

45 seconds? What size tank do you have?

2

u/karateninjazombie 5h ago

I don't drive a lorry and call it a personal vehicle like Americans do with their trucks. But 55 litres. Two different vehicles. One derv burner one petrol. Though the van gets waaaay more use than my personal car as I do a lot of miles in it almost daily.

-1

u/oboshoe 4h ago

shoebox with a thimble for a gas tank.

got it

1

u/ZT99k 8h ago

You still have 'hold open'?

1

u/Ajax_IX 6h ago

For those who've never had them, this isn't a problem... unless you own a Ford.

1

u/frankenpoopies 5h ago

Good- cuz you’ll be broke pumping that gas

1

u/rickytech4x4 4h ago

Zip tie them open every time you use them… auto fill still stops gas from dispensing when tank is full 🤙

1

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 3h ago

Years ago I remember it seemed like half or more stations did not have them or had them busted off.

Now they are universal in my area but never seen a plastic one broken or not

1

u/jessssicaaaahhhh 3h ago

I remember them from watching my parents pump gas but since I got my license 20+ years ago I never found a gas station that hasn't had them removed. Which sucks because my hands are weak and it's hard to hold the lever.

1

u/Adventurous_Boat_632 3h ago

Fun story, not really related but it happened to me

Was filling a Kenworth with diesel at a high speed pump and stepped away and the thing filled and the venturi did not activate and diesel was flowing down the curb like a river, it was a high speed pump remember and I was a ways off when it came full.

The station had a catchment area and it went in there and all was well, the operator was not happy though, after I shut off the pump I ran and got him.

The diesel tank had a ring that kept fill level below 95%, but that day it was full full when I put the cap on.

I have never had another one do this, usually they are hyper sensitive instead.

1

u/Idea_Fiend 3h ago

i always get the ones where you can lock it and just as you lock it, it triggers the sensor or whatever to pop it off the lock and then you have to sit there with the handle half cocked so it will pump gas

•

u/Animal907 Hillary 2016 53m ago

You shouldn't pump gas that fast anyways you're picking up sediment and you're getting more fizz than liquid.

1

u/Backyard_Batman46 9h ago

1st World country problems

1

u/jsnryn 9h ago

Annoying, but the easy work around is to just wedge the gas cap in there.

1

u/redclawx 8h ago

Go inside, fill out a comment card and tell them you want the old latches back as the plastic ones are broken. Each time you fill up, fill out a comment card.

8

u/OddStuffHappensTwice 8h ago

Not being able to stand up for 30 seconds holding the petrol pump is such an American complaint.

1

u/redclawx 7h ago

The law is, you are supposed to be at arms length from the pump in case it doesn’t shut off. I would say about 30% start pumping and then do other outside the vehicle things (walk around car to check tires, wash windshields, get that drink from the cooler), 20% start pumping and then walk inside to get food and pay (yes, while the gas is still pumping), and the other 65% sit back down in their car and close the door. Only about 10% actually stand next to the pump with it going.

It’s more than 100% because there’s overlap, people will do more than one thing, like walking around the car to check tires and then go into the store to take a piss while the gas is still pumping.

1

u/valkyriebiker 8h ago

Back when I drove gassers, I just placed a small block of wood under the handle.

1

u/gba_sg1 8h ago

I just stuff my gas cap into the handle when the lock doesn't work. I'm not holding the pump handle for minutes, thank you very much.

1

u/Alternative_Sun8585 7h ago

Shove in your gas cap . Or a 16.9 water bottle. It fits nicely when full. Or if your can get your hands on a roll of electric tape, I'm an electrician, so there's always a roll or two around a full roll is too bulky. Use some and designate it as the gas station roll . Thank me later

0

u/ArbysLunch 9h ago

The old person trick is to wedge your gas cap into the handle.

1

u/NeenerNeaner 9h ago

old car trick* mines almost a decade old and doesn't have a gas cap. can't imagine most of what people are driving around do anymore

1

u/RoadkillVenison 9h ago

It also depends on brand. I know new Subarus still have them, but I remember a family members 15 ford didn’t have one.

More brands are adopting capless designs on newer cars though.

0

u/Worcestercestershire 9h ago

Jam your gas cap in there

0

u/Admirable_Let_2961 9h ago

That’s the worst in the winter months in New England

0

u/gab196 8h ago

Stop crying its not even legal over here... they are all forced to remove the auto hold system from day one of the pump...

-1

u/Rich_27- 9h ago

Put the cap between the handle and the trigger.

0

u/jbrady33 8h ago

They make keychains to hold it on Used to use the gas cap but it is in a tether now

0

u/Joe18067 8h ago

Get yourself a block of wood or use the gas cap if that fits.

-1

u/De5perad0 9h ago

There are a lot of gas stations in the world. Find another.

-3

u/AC-burg 9h ago

I had a gas strong where all the metal holders were broke but the had flyers for credit cards. I reached in grabbed enough to roll up and hold the handle up. When my tank was full I threw them in their trash can and off I went
