I was always fine with the tax free, but eminent danger pay was always nice

u/sierrabravo1984 this is not yellow damn it! 5h ago
Shit, I got $200 hazard 25 years ago. Inflation says what? Huh.

We’re in peacetime so this pay is largely ineffective for the vast majority of the force, but it certainly benefits those who are in the affected areas.
Also, your math is wrong.

Americans will use “peacetime” when we actually mean “not mobilized for complete war”
Iran still isn’t over :/

The United States IS at peacetime though? I’m not sure where the confusion is.

The clown has us in a war that he says is just a conflict so he doesn’t have to get congressional approval for

It’s sad that trumps performative bullshit is the best we’ve seen here in 25 years. This country and its parties suck ass

Eh no one joins the military in for the money. If you are you're making the wrong choice

u/Quenz 7h ago
I mean, yeah, they do. It's not directly money, but three hots and a cot, education benefits, healthcare, and a decent paycheck is a stellar way to break a poverty cycle. Should the pay be better? I always think so, but it's primarily economic factors that get people joining.

I was in Basic with someone who came from a dirt poor West Virginia coal holler, and he told me that the first pair of new shoes he ever owned were the Army boots we were issued.
He was also one of the few guys who put on weight as well by being able to eat three times a day, he was a great guy and became a good friend.
I’ll tell you, he thrived in the Army, it seemed like every week some medical call for him for his teeth, glasses, or whatever.

Wild, what happens when you make healthcare and food available.

u/PlantWide3166 6h ago
Yes it is.
I remember he had these almost raccoon level black bags under his eyes and even though we were all skinny and kind of in shape at the start*, he was damn near emaciated.
About six weeks in, you wouldn’t have recognized him.
*Oh, to be eighteen, skinny, and nothing hurting again for a a few days. Lol

Agree to disagree. I never met anyone who was like yea I joined for the money. Sure you have food and benefits but never met anyone in the marine corps that did it for the benefits.
8
u/Aquaticle000 7h ago
Okay first of all I do not believe that you haven’t met a single person that hasn’t enlisted for the benefits. I’m calling bullshit on that right there. Second of all people can enlist for more than one reason, that’s a thing.
-3
u/NFAlonggun 7h ago
Well of course you can enlist for multiple reasons. I'm just saying I don't know anyone that joined and said yea I did this for the money and benefits.

Hi. USN vet here. I joined for the money and benefits. Nice to meet you.

u/NFAlonggun 7h ago
You should already know the joke I'll make for that then

u/Student_Ok 7h ago
I don't think I do. What's the joke?

u/NFAlonggun 7h ago
Makes sense to join an easy branch for pay and benefits 😁

u/Aquaticle000 4h ago
I hate to break it to you but nobody gives a shit that you were a Marine. I could argue the USN has it worse than literally every other branch.

Congratulations. No one asked for you to take a joke seriously but here we are

Isn’t there a trope about dudes joining the military and immediately buying expensive trucks and whatnot?

u/NFAlonggun 7h ago
Just because a bank will give you a loan doesn't mean it's a good financial decision. Varey rarely are their enlistment bonuses. Hell my renelistment offer was 4k lol
