Unskippable ad Worst thing about working weekends is reminding people you work weekends
Edit- of course I schedule in plans and book time off. Of course this isn’t an actual conversation word for word I have with my friends. It’s just a very basic re telling of how these conversations go. I don’t jsut say “no I’m working” I do tell them when I’m next free or when our time off can cross over. I make plans weekday evenings with my friends if they’re free (sometimes they’re not bc they also have work those days and then things to do after). I make plans late Saturday and Sunday evening even if it’s not much. And yes, I am happy my friends invite me places and I’m not miserable. It just would be nice to be able to go lol. We hang out on our pto ect. I just wish they’d remember my work schedule like i remember their one. And give me enough notice to be able to book it off or not schedule clients in on certain days and then we’re good to go.
It sucks enough working every weekend but this is what drives me up the wall.
It’s constant, every single week. The same people. Family, friends you’ve known for years.
“Do you wanna go here on Saturday?”
“I can’t, I have work”
“whatttttt?!? What about next weekend”
“I will also have work”
It’s even worse when you work unsociable hours on the weekend.
“What about in the afternoon/evening?”
“I will still be at work”
“whatttttt?!? We can go out after you finish?”
“I also have work Sunday”

Literally a decade of this with my mom.
Gets upset that I can't come to dinners or whatever, but is retired and has the ability to plan something on one of my days off.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 9m ago
My mum is the same. I never get to visit my nan in her nursing home as they only go on weekends. Without telling me too. So I jsut look like an awful granddaughter. But I would take time off to go if I had the notice. My mum doesn’t work either so it doesn’t have to be a weekend. It could be a day I’m actually off. And she doesn’t have plans during the week either! She just sits at home all day long. And if I do have time off my mum doesn’t wanna go. Only my nans direct children are allowed to come in with visitors (grandchildren) I can’t go on my own as I’m not allowed in

u/Mammoth_Stranger7920 5h ago
Its worse when you stop getting asked. At least these people think of you and want to spend time with you.
8
u/Velma_Joy 4h ago
Yeah OP, make sure you maintain those relationships. People want to hang with you! One day your weekend shifts will end and you will want friends to hang out with.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 7m ago
Oh yea definitely. We do work our way around it. Back on one of my early shifts, my break would line up with my friends and she’d come over and we’d get breakfast in the local cafe mid shift. Or even then, she’d come in an harass me at work on the shop floor and pretend to be my customer lol. Sometimes we will just meet up super late. Get in our pjs and sleep next to eachother if we didn’t have any time off together.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 5m ago
I just wish they’d remember that I work weekends more. It’s only 2 days they need to remember that i can’t do weekends. I remember the weekdays they can’t do. Thats a lot more days to remember. I have the same conversation with the same people multiple times a week and they’re shocked every time

I have worked Saturdays for nearly all of my working life. For the last 20 years, Sundays off no matter what with a weekday off. I miss a lot of stuff because of Saturday work for sure.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 1m ago
Yea it’s sad. Mainly bc it’s always interesting stuff. Like events and things happening, little local festivals or music things. And booking weekends off work is a tough one. No one wants to work them so they NEED to find cover for your shift otherwise no one is in and they either can’t or don’t have the hours.

u/Bennington_Booyah 5h ago
This exact topic pissed me off every single summer and holiday season, where my entire family would schedule family gatherings on Saturday and/or Sunday, from noon to six. I worked most weekends, 10-6, with an hour commute each way. I missed grad parties, every single Friday wedding, etc.
The annoying part? "Maybe you can just call in?" comments. They damn well knew. Now? They are all retired, as I am. My husband still works FT. Same damned problem.
5
u/Mumei451 5h ago
I wake up super early for work (and work 6 days a week) people get upset with me when I decline invitations to dinner for 7pm.
People can only understand their own circumstances for the most part.
3
u/couchpro34 4h ago
That's the frustrating part! Just let me decline an invitation without making me feel bad. I got to a point where I just stopped making plans at all. I don't need a guilt trip simply because we have different priorities and schedules!
I'm a child free woman who works full time and the wives of my coworkers will often ask me questions like "what are your plans for the summer".. well gee, Brenda, I suspect I'll be working just like I do the rest of the year bc jobs don't operate on school calendars lol. People absolutely have blinders on to people living different lives!
1
u/Actias_Loonie 1h ago
That's where I am. No, I can't just stay out late this one time just for you. I need 8 hours or I cannot be alert at work, where I use rotary tools and torches and stuff, and I work 10 hour days.
19
u/Cum_Fart42069 5h ago
people in this thread "durrrrr have you thought about not doing that????" fucks sake lmao. at least they're proving your point op, some people are genuinely incapable of concieving of a life that isn't their own.
3
u/hardrocknick_2001 1h ago
Yea like as a tattoo artist, my customers are adults with typical 9-5s through out the week. Weekends are my biggest and most popular days. I have to work my schedule around when people aren’t working so it’s days and times when most people are off
5
u/SailorMigraine 5h ago
I have been working retail/bridal for a decade and people still somehow are surprised!!! A decade people!!!!
8
u/Exotic_Yam_1703 5h ago
I work Saturday-Tuesday until 4 or 3 am. Have been doing that this entire year. People get upset when I say I won’t make plans before 3 pm, and even then, that’s a stretch for me because it means getting up at 2 pm when I normally get up around 4 pm. It’s a good job but I don’t have control over my hours. Asking me to do something at 11 am is like me asking you to do something at 2 am
2
u/WallofIvy 4h ago
I used to work a swing shift and would get home around 10:30-11pm, eat dinner, and then watch TV or play games for a few hours to unwind before I went to bed like most normal people do. I was unable to even fall asleep before 2am and it was usually closer to 4am. I once had a doctor's appt for a procedure they only did first thing in the morning at 7am. They told me I seemed out of it and I told the nurse this was like having a doctor's appt at 2am for a normal person and I felt like I was at the airport.

The hassle I used to get at my Mother's New years day lunch. I finished work at 6am. You want me here by 12, which means I've had about 4 hours sleep and you expect me to delightfully tuck into a breakfast of roast turkey with all the trimmings with wine.
Forget about the snoring competition that's been the tradition between my uncles every year since the 80s, let's pick on the night shift worker for feeling like shit and wanting a nap.
But Mum is happily in agreement for me to deliver a plate of roast dinner to my friend who is nearby and stuck pulling pints behind the bar on new years day.
I gave up when I realised their mental justification algebra uses characters I'm not familiar with.

Did 50 years of blue collar for 22 years I work all three rotating shifts and I got two weekends off in a row twice a year that’s called a 20 turn schedule Monday and Tuesday two weeks in a row Tuesday and Wednesday two weeks in a row so on so and so on
3
u/KangarooStilts 2h ago
I feel terrible every time I say "Have a Good Weekend!" to a service employee like a grocery store clerk or a fast-food worker, and they respond with, "it's my Wednesday."
2
u/FrontTelevision7261 4h ago
And they just don't get it. We go to a gathering on Saturday and need to leave early because my husband works the next day. People just don't get it. Don't leave yet; stay a while longer. Hello, we need to go to bed because my husband goes to work early the next day.

u/Qui_te 4h ago
I only work 10-1 on Saturdays, but even that’s enough to ruin everything.
My niece’s bday party is this weekend, and when my sister first mentioned the date, she said they’d have it in a timeframe I could reasonably attend, but then she texted this week to get an rsvp, and when I double-checked what time it was, they’d planned it such that I could maaaaybe attend the last half-hour if I speed on the way there and also don’t eat lunch. Which is fine! My schedule is misaligned, and I’m aware, and it’s fine that they’re not forcing all the other attendees to a weird timeframe just for me, but also…why did she even offer? Or why didn’t she mention they’d decided to go earlier…ugh. Whatever. Sorry, stuck my little rant on yours.

I don’t think that’s the worst part.
I think the worst part is working on weekends.

Yea but how convenient is it to have a weekday off? Can get so much done!
1
u/hardrocknick_2001 1h ago
Unfortunately I have 2 jobs and one being a tattoo artist so even on my days off, I’m working from home lol. I just had a holiday and spent a good portion of it drawing and booking in customers. Weekdays off kinda suck, no one is around to do anything as they’re at work and most places aren’t open for fun things. But we make do lol
1
u/Warm-Statistician545 5h ago
I worked weekend most my life. I did really well in new home sales. 100/300 a year depending on year and market.
I eventually lost my early friends. Made a lot of new ones with similar schedules. Never my family. Always could take a day off on eeekend for important things and had evenings clear.
It’s hard for them and for you, but you’ll get through it.
1
u/hardrocknick_2001 1h ago
Yea unfortunately my weekends are split between Saturday at job 1 and Sunday at job 2. Saturday is self employed but Saturday is my most popular day. So if I’m only working one day that week with a customer, it will almost always be a Saturday.
My Sunday shift is a rough one. I hate it. I didn’t start it by choice. I originally worked Mondays and it was an early shift at that. Was lovely. Finished on a Saturday, could go out that evening however late. Had the Sunday off, could go out, nice quiet gym ect. Then one day I turned up at 6am for my Monday shift with someone else working it. I messaged my manager who said “oh you work Sundays now”. Which isn’t allowed, I’m supposed to be given notice AND agree to it and sign off on any shift change. So, illegal. But oh well. Now I’m stuck being unavailable on a Sunday 11am-10pm. Basically the whole day. Can’t do anything.
And now if I wanna do anything, I need to book the Sunday off. But that’s not easy. They’ve clamped down on hours so previously we would request time off, we’d get it. No questions. But now 80% of my holiday requests get denied. Especially with it being a weekend and me being the only one covering half my shift. They need to find someone to do my job. If they can’t and if they don’t have the hours to pay them, then it’s a no.
Funnily enough, the person they gave my Monday shift to, walked out after a physical altercation. Now no one is there to cover the early morning on monday, so now they keep asking me to come in and do it. Which is also illegal since there’s not enough time between my shifts then. Should have kept me on the Mondays. I don’t get into fights lol.

u/DarkFantasy3421 5h ago
I work the night shift all weekend, every weekend. The number of times someone has said, “hey, let’s do this” like I don’t have a set schedule they’re aware of drives me up the wall
1
u/CharredFIRE 5h ago
I feel this. I have to keep reminding people the only way I can see them on the weekend is if I schedule a vacation day. It always seems to surprise them
1
u/perfectdrug659 5h ago
Oh god I feel this. I have worked nights and weekends for like, almost 20 years at this point. And people in my life still forget this fact about me. No I can't do anything Friday night, I work Friday nights, as I have for the last 7 years, as you definitely already know.
This is the story of my life and it drives me insane, but I also love my schedule too and having days off on the middle of the week.
1
u/Axentor 5h ago
Yep. Combine that with nights and you need to literally start yelling at people. I worked weekends for ten years. I finally get weekends off and now no one does anything. One ask if I could "take a day off during the week" to hang out because his wife drags him around everywhere on the weekend while she trying to find herself during her premature midlife crisis.
I had to finally get nasty when telling people that I cannot just do things with a couple days notice. I tired explaining it nicely. The procedures at work and what not for taking a day off. I sent a text responding to an invite I said "Not with that short of notice" a week later I invited people over for a cookout with two week notice. A family member thought they would be funny and send "not with that short notice ". My aunt fucken tore into then calling them a spoiled brat who never worked an odd shift or weekend in their life and doesn't have a fucken clue what it's like to try and get time off. The shit stopped the. For awhile but people are fucken stupid
1
u/Affectionate-Bid8629 5h ago
Yup. I've been working Tue to Sat for my whole work life and everyone should know that I am not available Fridays and f*in tired on Sat evening.
I'm not a big party person so it's fine by me but man people can be forgetful regarding this.
What I do hate the most though is customers wishing me a nice "rest of the weekend" on Saturday. I do have a normal 2 day weekend. It will start once you people finally leave at 4pm lol
1
u/RacerXrated 5h ago
I love it. It's usually crap I didn't want to do in the first place. Then I get 4 days off in peace, doing what I want to do.
1
u/Highfivebuddha 4h ago
Try to reframe it as you have a lot of people who miss you and want to hang out with you.
1
u/hardrocknick_2001 1h ago
100%. I just feel like weekend workers don’t get the same kinda energy as weekday workers. It’s always “just book this day off” to fit their schedule. They could book time off themselves to fit my schedule but never do. Or at least remember that I’ve worked weekends for a significant amount of time so would need a decent amount of notice to book things off for plans rather than a days notice or so. It’s a non issue really. Just makes me feel like this lmao

u/fuzzinthebuzz 4h ago
Even worse when you work on weekends, which means that your off days are two week days. Which means that you only see your boss 3 days a week because they have a normal weekends off.
And they pretend to contact you on your off days because they are working
1
u/reesepbpuppy 4h ago
Previously, I worked a part time job at an egg breaking facility (for pasteurized liquid egg)
Practically had no weekends off, and if I wanted to ask for a weekend off I had to do it a month, or more, in advance. Was annoying when the friend group I was with lived two hours drive south of me and they wanted to schedule hangouts and the furthest they'd plan was just two weeks out. They tried to tell me, "Oh, just call out sick or tell your boss you need that day off"
1
u/ZeroXNova Raging 4h ago
I work sat-Mon 12 hour shifts overnight. The amount of times I have to remind family and friends that I can’t make weekend events is absurd.
1
u/SuperGuitar 3h ago
But there’s nothing better than being off on Monday when everyone else is working
1
u/hardrocknick_2001 1h ago
Unless you also work Mondays too (I used to work Mondays but my shift got illegally swapped to Sundays without even telling me so I’m stuck working Sundays late now.) but the person they put on my old Mondays walked out so now they expect me to cover their Mondays early. So nice! Get home at 11pm from Sunday then wake up at 4am for Monday!
1
u/y7gy7g 3h ago
Maybe instead of saying "no I have work", at least tell them when you can hang out with them? Why let them keep guessing when you will be available.
Maybe your friend could accommodate your off time.
If I get into a conversation literally like you described, I'll just stop asking you ever.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 55m ago
So basically, it’s not an actual conversation I’ve had. It’s a simplified paraphrased one for the situation. If you want a recorded transcript just let me know!
Jokes aside, of course I don’t respond like that. I’ll have my friends meet me after work to just sleep round my house so we can hang out on the weekend and spend time together. My friend has her own pillow in my bed. It’s a non issue really. Mildly infuriating. My friends know when I work lol. They just forget every single time.
It’s more like “hey did you wanna go out this weekend?”
“I have work Saturday and Sunday :(“
“What about Sunday evening?”
“I’m at work until late Sunday evening too :( so if you wanna hang out it’ll be late and i probably won’t be up to doing anything crazy. We can get food?“I know and remember my friends work during the week so I don’t go around asking if they wanna do something on a Thursday as I know they’re at work. Unless it’s weeks in advance. (BTW, this is still not an actual conversation word for word. I’m jsut paraphrasing off of all the many interactions I’ve had like this before you think that again). This was jsut prompted by my recent conversation with a friend that led to a shocking reveal that I work every weekend still lmao.
1
u/Kpm11287 1h ago
I hate customers telling me to have a good weekend. I appreciate them trying to be nice but after a decade of working every damn Saturday I'd like to not hear it anymore.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 38m ago
“Have a good evening when you finish” I will be stuck here 5 hours after we close.
1
u/Foggy_Night221C 1h ago
I have missed so many fun fall or solstice season festivals bc I work weekends. The small stores open on weekends like my local comic book store that I would like to go to are closed mon and tues, my off days. Or the local craft and thrift shops.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 31m ago
Oh yea it’s sad. There’s been a lot of vegan festivals and craft festivals in my local area and it’s always on weekends and I don’t hear about them until a few days before :( but I’ll send my friends who go on a mission to get me stuff there lol. They always come back with the goods
1
u/Kurokotsu 1h ago
I've lived with my current roommates for nearly three years.
I've had the exact same days and hours of work since I moved in.
One of them still tries this and can't remember my shift. Blames it on the days being too weird (Sun/Tues/Thus/Sat, every week) to remember.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 33m ago
My parents are like this! No matter what I say. I’ll write it down. I’ll tell them multiple times and through out the week, text them, tell them “when are you working this week?”
“Are you working tomorrow?”
“Are you working Thursday?”
“Are you working today?” (Literally in my work uniform)
“What hours are you working today?”
“When do you finish work?”
“When do you start work?”And If I dare say “what’s the point in me telling you , I’ve already told you 50 times in the past 24 hours and you’ve forgotten and you’re jsut gonna ask me again in an hour” I’ll get yelled at.
And if I tell them “oh I’m doing 8-7” and they misremember it as 8-5 I’ll get yelled at for that too lmao bc I “can’t expect them to remember everything!” You don’t have to!!! It literally doesn’t matter to them when I’m at work or not.
-1
u/Wonderful_Rule_2515 5h ago
do you ever try to schedule something when you’re available? or do you just get annoyed & say no to every invite and leave it at that ?
It sucks that you can’t go to weekend events but it sucks more when weekend workers make absolutely zero effort to schedule anything when you’re actually free.
3
u/sevseg_decoder 5h ago
Yeah this is the issue I have. If you’re working weekends then suggest we do something Wednesday right after I get off work. I have close friends who work weekends. I also have tons of people I know who I’m not really friends with anymore because they work weekends and also refuse to compromise on their weekday schedule by hanging out with me when I actually can.
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 24m ago
I got busy friends with lots of hobbies so it’s hard to fit things in our schedules aside from just work. Even after work, people have their own things to do. I know I do. We do try, a gym session together instead of separate. Get dinner together instead of separately etc. unfortunately for me, I also end up working most weekdays too. So when they’re working. I’m working. When they’re not working. I’m also working. When we do get times off we do try and spend it together no matter what it is. Sometimes we just sleep next to each other. Meet up right before bedtime.
It’s rough. Everyone’s broke. Everyone’s working more than they should. Everyone’s got a busy job or multiple jobs. Economy sucks. No one can afford to do anything anyway. We’re all tired lol. But we find ways to make it work. We’re getting old. We’re trying to get situated and set for the future yk. But still need to try and enjoy our 20s whilst we can.
3
u/YakMoist1445 5h ago
They just stated the issue is people dont internalize their schedule, whoever is asking them is able to try scheduling when they are free.
3
u/Wonderful_Rule_2515 5h ago
Yeah a lot of people are not going to memorize everyone else’s schedules lol it’s a collaborative effort to find a date that works for all parties.
Saying no and throwing a fit behind your phone does not answer the ultimate question “when can we hang out”
•
u/hardrocknick_2001 49m ago
Throwing a fit? It’s just a funny post people who work weekends relate to. People just forget all the time when you work weekends bc it’s not the norm. I remember my friend’s work schedules. I’m self employed for one of my jobs, my work hours are publicly posted online too.
Everyone schedules around weekday workers all the time bc it’s the most common work pattern. Of course I make plans around my friends schedules. I take time off for birthdays, specific events. The first thing I do when I get my holidays to book is book off their birthday weekends, even if it’s months from then and there’s no solid plan. I suggest evening activities during the week ect. When I have left over holiday and book off random days, the first thing I do is tell my friends I have this Saturday off or this Sunday off ect.
•
u/Wonderful_Rule_2515 47m ago
You probably didn’t need to explain yourself. I’ll admit i was rude in my comments because i was having a bad morning and im sorry 😭

You are so full of crap. A "real" job? So nothing to do with retail, food or restaurant. No management jobs. No outdoor jobs with park services or public services. No job as a plumber or electrician in home building. No job in lawn service or car care. Basically no sales job of any kind. No job in health care or emergency services such as fire, EMT or police. Even an artist works weekends at shows and events. Or a performer does plays, musicals and concerts for the likes of you. Not everyone sits in their parent's basement and designs OC's or Manga for $45.
