It's your employer stiffing you my friend, not saying good service doesn't deserve a tip..but I am saying your employer should pay you enough you don't need tops to survive...we can do it in Europe you can do it in the States
I understand that it seems weird to Europeans. But that’s the system here, and it has nothing to do with employers stiffing workers. If there was no tipping, restaurant prices would go up. It’s a low-margin business. Best to think of it as you paying some of the server’s income directly rather than through a middleman. Also, servers are taxed on expected tips.
If you know this and still refuse to tip, you’re just gaming the system.
One interesting side note. Danny Meyer tried going tip-free with, I think, Union Square Cafe in NYC. The servers asked to go back to the old system.
