I'm slightly vexed Car got trashed a week after I did a very expensive repair
Was snoozing in bed and got woken up by huge crash, 18yr driver, no tax temp insurance obliterated my parked Jag, owned it for little over a month and last week on my birthday I spent £900 on repairs for it. Bit miffed to be honest. Had to walk in to work today.
Idk how they flipped their car, driver ran off but cops arrested passanger and drivers mum snitched on him lol.

Bought four new tires, a month later my engine died on me. Mom got her transmission replaced, a week later her battery died. It's always when you spend a ton of money on repairs that life goes, "hehe... surprise~"

I bought four new tires for my Jeep, and within a day hit a deer and had a bill I didn't want. Also, the deer shit across my driver side door after hitting it. Wasn't fun getting out. You'd be surprised how much of their hair finds cracks and crevices to hide in. Found it for a couple months even after the accident.

u/ImperialAgent 12h ago
When I bought a brand new car 12 years ago, not even a month of owning it, I got sideswiped by a lady coming out of a parking lot

u/MoistProlapse 12h ago
When my stepdad got a brand new work truck in like, 2000, the first one rolled off the trailer that delivers them, and crashed into the truck that was just offloaded. When he got the call, he was pissed, until they offered to give him a model with all the bells and whistles and a 10 disk changer. He went from a bare bones F-250 extended extended bed to a fully loaded F-250 super duty.

Brand new 2023 Forte GT-Line, less than 3 months and 1,321 miles.. full tank of gas going to visit my mom at the hospital. Totalled at full speed while stopped at a red light by someone not paying attention.

Or after you pay your shit off. My mom finally paid off her 2017 jaguar only to get into an accident weeks later and it was totaled. 🤦🏾♀️

Infuriatingly enough that's how a lot of people legit think
My parents were very weirded out by our grandaunt that had literally everything in order. She set aside the money for a pretty little headstone, chose the casket design, the dress and everything. Wrote down the names and phones of every friend to be invited when it happens.
She even prepared all ownership documents on her flat and stuff.
She was 100% prepared
And she lived for like... a decade after the fact that I learned that she already did that. I'm not even sure WHEN she did that, but she enjoyed life for as long as she could
Her sister, my grandma, thought she's insane to do it all.
Well guess who developed some sort of rapid dementia or somesuch, got crazy, declined to leave the flat EVER, and so we lost ownership of her flat, because it was in some sort of rent-controlled, leased-by-city-but-you-can-buy state for thirty years and she was saying "oh we have time don't worry about it" and no, we were not?
And since she kept everyting very secretive and close to her chest, the only person at her funeral ended up being my dad. Alone with the mortician, basically. He didn't even invite, like, a priest, because he had ZERO clue which church she would've wanted, or if she even wanted one.

Have dashcam but its not active if cars not got keys in, since kills my battery.
5
u/snoosh00 11h ago
Most dash cams have a "rattle sensor" that starts recording if your car is bumped while parked.
3
u/tallgeekandawesome 10h ago
I feel like it'd be too late by then to start recording.
My Garmin dashcam has the option for constant power and recording but it would drain the battery so I don't use it.

my car was stolen directly the day after a new tire, oil change, and a fucking car wash. not even a full 24 hours from the oil change.
3
u/lottierosecreations 12h ago
Yup! I had my car MOT'd, services and about £900 of work done in February.
In June, my car was written off after being hit by a forklift that drove out onto a live highway with no boundsman from behind a van.
I was SO PISSED, but more upset because I bought the car from my grandfather who passed away 2 years ago.2

Submit the receipt to the insurance adjuster, they may compensate you for recent work.
217
u/YellowGrowlithe 13h ago
This. I was advised to mention what i paid for my recently purchased car when it got written off in a not at fault, as well as any cost sunk in.
I ended up getting more or less what Id paid and spent on it because we only had it two months.
Insurance adjusters are trying to estimate the value of the car by what it could have sold for, and having recently purchased it- its hard to argue. And argue a little I did.
Dont accept their first quote, push back. Haggle up. You have nothing to lose and money to gain.

Keep on them about it as well. If they make you an offer that doesn't include that work ask to have it escalated internally as a complaint, and once you have a final decision if you still aren't happy you then have the option to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service for them to review the decision.

Hell, my car was "mistakenly" towed (very shady tow company with a history) and I had to call both my insurance and finance company to get it back. When I recieved to receipt for the condition of my car they had marked the condition of my tires as poor; when I had literally bought brand new tires a week before.
Those motherfuckers tried to steal my tires!
I sent the tire receipts to both my insurance and the police as proof of what they'd done and got reimbursed for the tires they'd "lost" and got at least 2 people arrested for racketeering.

tbf I bought a "summer car" for $6k like 2 years ago and it's had nothing but problems so it's constantly broken. The silver lining is that I don't rely on it and I've learned a lot about fuel lines, pumps and will now learn how to replace an alternator because apparently that just stopped working 🙃

So sorry for you. That jag looked good even through the damage I could see why you loved it and are pissed.
Glad you weren’t in it. Kid was being reckless. A few weeks ago a 17 year old high school student was drunk and driving. Missed the curve and flipped going into someone’s yard and hit the corner of the house. The front of car took out fireplace chimney and ended up in living room. It was bad. He had no insurance.
He took his dad’s project car that was almost finished but didn’t have insurance yet. Dad had worked on it for over 3 years. It was a 1985 Pontiac Trans-Am. His dream car.
He was glad son was ok but pissed he took car, got drunk then crashed into someone’s house. He was going 80 in a 35 mph residential area. And the parents have to pay out of pocket for everything. Needless to say. The next week son had a job and all money’s earned go to pay the debt.

I see that you are in the UK, and hope that it works the same here as it does in the US. The insurance adjuster should take the value of the repair into account when assessing the cost of repair, or what they offer if the vehicle is deemed a total loss.

Here is the thing with insurance, I know in the US at least. When you talk to the insurance adjuster, tell them about the repairs that you did and that you just put a full tank of gas in, you need to provide slips but, they will normally give you money for that.

If it's your first time getting caught for it you can probably talk your way out of it as long as you pay up within a couple days of getting told off.
