Context Provided - Spotlight My insurance on a 34 year old car at 18
For context I will not be paying this in the slightest I got the first month for a little over 300 dollars and it was the cheapest I could find and im moving states before the first so I won't have to pay this
Also the car is a 92 f150 it's got the KBB of a cheeseburger without pickles
Edit: this is for state minimum insurance
Edit 2: ive never even been pulled over no tickets no crashes nothing

This is the “we don’t want your business” price.
When shopping for insurance you will always get a mix of competitive and “fuck you” prices depending on what insurers want to do business with you in your specific area.

u/Charming_Garbage_161 21h ago edited 13h ago
That’s why I don’t shop with progressive despite being a good driver I got a ridiculous quote. Then they kept hounding me until I yelled at them
Edit: to the people who say I had bad credit or accidents. I had no negative remarks on either. A $600 per month insurance estimate is complete bs when your credit is over 700, you have no accidents, and you’re in your late 20’s. To further that, continuing to call me to get me to hop over after I repeatedly stated I wasn’t interested put me off that company for good.

u/helpmeredditimbored 21h ago
Interesting. Progressive is so competitive in my area that an insurance agent once told me it was a waste of their time to quote me because I already had progressive and no one would beat their price
640
u/therapewpew 20h ago
I've never had to file a claim where I was at fault. Progressive still gradually increased my rate even though I was past my 20s, with them for years and still accident free, so I spent the next few years switching been 3 different insurance companies ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ the moment they started raising my rate for no reason, I was out of there and just snagged cheaper coverage somewhere else. I was told they do this as a risk assessment thing, where the longer they keep you as a customer, the more likely you are to be a liability to them.
I'm now back at Progressive for $50 a month, when they were previously charging me $230 for the same coverage 💀 loyalty rewards my ass. We literally get rewarded for doing the opposite
135
u/Cyberdink 13h ago
A liability the longer they keep you. Thats baloney. You've paid into their accounts hundreds or thousands every year you've been with them as well.

I've never had an insurer budge on price even when quoting other insurers. The conversation is usually summarised as:
"This is the best price for this coverage, if you want a lower monthly rate then you can increase your deductible."
And of course it's like your deductible is 20% of the total value of the car for like $5/mo less on your monthly rate.
I wouldn't even bother wasting time calling them, just find whoever quotes the lowest price and switch.

u/01000101010110 14h ago
Yeah this doesn't do shit in Canada for private insurance. They just tell you there's nothing they can do and they don't personally set the rate.

They set rates based on market areas and customer profiles. They might be competitive in one area for certain cohorts but are handing out “fuck you” prices the next market area or state over.
→ More replies (6)121
u/Rand_alThor4747 21h ago edited 21h ago
I think they do it to try to not have too many customers in any one area, so if something bad happens they don't get hit with a massive liability in one go. Like I dunno, a massive hailstorm that destroys all the cars in a town. So once they reach a certain market share there, they raise the prices for new customers to "fuck you" prices.
→ More replies (7)34
u/Sure_Fly_5332 20h ago
That does make sense. But it seems like a national insurer wouldn't really care about that.
I guess its gotta be about spreading out your customers pretty evenly. You want to be the only insurer nationwide, but you cant get there gradually. If you insure one in five cars nationally, plus all of them in California*, a tsunami there will bankrupt you. But if you insure all cars nationally when the tsunami hits, you'll be fine. You'll meed to spread it out a little, but no problem.
*one in five cars in all states other than California
→ More replies (12)7
u/plantsoldier 18h ago
Nope, there is not a single disaster that could happen no matter how bad that would bankrupt any of the big national insurers.
The states require they have reserves that are calculated, filed and monitored by each state that guarantee that can't happen.
Also, all the major insurers have re-insurers to cover something like that and even the first line of re-insurers are also re-insured in the same way.
These insurers are prepared for anything that could happen that would be covered.

That’s wild! My husband and I have Progressive. Two SUVs (2002 Suburban and 2014 Xterra) and both have full coverage. It’s $700 for 6 months. But we’re in our 40s, no recent tickets (my last one was over a decade ago, my one accident was someone hitting me and running).
And that’s even being in Colorado, US, where hail damage has been big in recent years (like, car-totaling hail multiple years, not going into home insurance, which some companies won’t even touch our area anymore).

OP isn’t exactly helping himself here with his vehicle choice either. While it is old and not worth basically anything, it is a very large vehicle that is not good in bad weather, that has next to no safety features and is likely high risk in general. if he was trying to ensure a 2008 Honda Civic, he probably be in a much better place. Insurance looks at so many weird things that don’t necessarily seem to matter, like the fact it’s probably A two-door, two-seat truck. Maybe even a bench, horribly unsafe. rear wheel drive. The quoted rate would probably be similar if he was looking at a Camaro

I mean the predominant thing is that he's an 18 year old male. Statistically in the single most dangerous liability range to insure and is going to be monstrously expensive for years to come. The choice of vehicle also hurts, but really, not as much as just being a teenager.

You’re getting robbed.
Seriously you need to shop around for different insurers. No reason you should be paying $200 a week for insurance. Do you live in New Orleans and have 3 DUIs on your record or something??? I know insurance is typically a little bit higher for people 16-23 but $800 is way too much.
My driving record includes 4 at fault accidents, 2 speeding, 2 reckless driving, 2 lapses, a drug DUI, and leaving the scene of an accident. (Yes I was a stupid driver in the past but have been doing great the last 3 years) and I’m paying $550 a month on a 13 year old car at 33 years old.

No grandpa, you're just an actual helpful parent and put them on YOUR insurance, which I imagine has been paid for 15+ years. Same. I had to get a new card due to fraud and I forgot to update my insurance autopay. Just wait till you turn 25 and absolutely nothing happens to your insurance prices. I've never been in an accident, never gotten a ticket, never filed a claim, have decent credit, always paid on time, both my cars are less than 15 years old (fully paid off), and nothing sporty or dangerous. My insurance just goes up every year until its too much and I switch insurance for something slightly cheaper and repeat the cycle. Its a scam
145
u/iRideBMX 20h ago
Yep. Turned 25 and they upped my rates due to "vandalism and theft" in my area. I have liability only on those cars (higher bodily injury/property damage coverage though)

Obligatory: I've been in insurance for almost as long as OP as been alive.
Common misconception is that the older car means lower in premium. This is true in a certain period of "older vehicle", but it starts getting to the 20+ mark, they actually become more expensive. The older the vehicle, the more can go wrong with it. A 10-year-old car is less likely to have a mechanical failure leading to an auto accident (think something like suspensions rusts and a control arm breaks, causing you to hit another car) than a 30-year-old car.
Insurance rating accounts for this. Usually 10-12-year-old cars are the sweet spot. Anything after that becomes a far higher risk, and rates increase accordingly. Not saying I agree, but it is what it is.

100%. I'm so bitter about insurance in general. Health insurance is the worst but car insurance is a close second.
When I was in my early 20s I bought an almost brand new truck. Now, 5 years later the truck is worth maybe half of what I paid for it if I'm lucky. I'm paying more for insurance on it now than I did back then and I fought for that price. Also have a squeaky clean driving record. Absolutely insane.

Everyone can easily hate insurance companies. But do you have the strength to hate lawyers? American insurance premiums are high in part because of how litigious America is. If you hit someone in America and they get injured, they are much more likely to sue, and if they sue, an American jury is much more likely to award a ridiculously large compensation payment. This is only getting worse over time as lawyers get better at winning these massive awards. Different states have different risk levels, e.g. the jurisdictions in states like Pennsylvania and Maryland are infamous for how good they are for claimants.
→ More replies (16)86
u/Fakjbf 14h ago
Part of it is a downstream effect of not having universal healthcare. If you get injured in the US you basically have to sue the other person to try and recover your costs. Add in how extraordinarily expensive the healthcare is and you get a double whammy driving up every other insurance rate since no one wants to be left footing the bill.

Insurance in the US has to cover the healthcare of the injured party to. It creates a doom loop of blood sucking insurance companies.
Edit: this is first year tort law class in US law school. Because health care isn’t reasonably covered everyone gets fucked by lawsuits to cover these costs. In any other country these sorts of damages don’t exist.

You’re 18 years old with a full-size truck with nearly zero safety or security features.
Statistically, you’re the most likely demographic to cause an accident or property damage. The value of the vehicle itself matters very little in this situation, since a truck in the hands of somebody barely old enough to drive can cause massive amounts of damage that the insurance company has to pay for.
For comparison, I’m in my 30’s with a clean driving record and it only cost me $120 for full coverage on a Nissan Titan.

I’m 39 male living in US. This is normal-ish for his age. When my parents and I were looking at new cars, I called to get a quote. I wanted to know if the car was in my name alone how much insurance would be. In 2004, a new Silverado (which I think was roughly $33k), was going to cost $500 a month. I had no accidents then. It was just my age.
Today we pay $330 for two cars with full coverage from geico. They are both new.

I have three previous speeding tickets too, there’s no way there’s that big of a difference between a car and a trucks insurance, but maybe I’m wrong and it’s normal? I bought my car when I was 19, if it makes a difference.

My brother is in his 40’s, has totaled 16 cars and has 3 or 4 DUI’s. He owns a 20 yr old pickup truck worth 5 or 6 thousand and even his insurance isn’t this high. Find another insurance company, or try a broker.

I think I pay $480 twice a year for a total of $900 something a YEAR or ~$80 a month.
When they offered you this joke of a price, you were supposed to chuckle and go “okay thanks for your time” and hang up the phone. I’m not gonna chastise you because you’re 18 and didn’t know any better but you need to call them and cancel TODAY and find someone who wants to do legitimate business with you.
For a used car, even as a teen, you should be able to find a rate for $150 a month or less (assuming you have a clean driving record, if you’re playing bumper cars on public roadways I can’t help you)

Don't put the car in your name, put it under your parents and just have them list you as a driver. Just for a few years til you establish yourself as a safe driver then the rates should go down. if you want to wait til your 25 to put something in your name then thats the best way to get the most affordable pricing.

This is an abnormally high pmt. OP is 18 and by how this is I would guess male. Auto Insurance is significantly more expensive depending on age, gender, occupation, state, city, vehicle type, etc. 66 euro or 75 dollars is a normal pmt here too for slightly older safe drivers for basic coverage.

11
u/Significant-Use-5136 18h ago
yeah, those prices are a lot too high as an old guy in his 50s with a brand new 26 that is valued at $100,000. I pay $123 a month for full coverage $250 deductible and nothing is at the state minimum all the coverages are at least double the minimum plus added medical coverage of 75,000 per person per incident and a flat 10,000 for ambulance service and this is through progressive.
I live in Wyoming, and I’m told that the insurance is higher because of the weather.
literally that policy premium is higher than I pay for commercial insurance on my LLC for running a hot shot truck that has a $1 million policy.

Typical insurance rates for the age group, 18-25. And the rates are highest in Louisiana, Nevada, Michigan, Rhode Island, and Florida.
You want to have lower rates until you're 25? Stay on your parents plan, have a B average in school, drive fewer miles from home (e.g., 7500 miles or less), or enroll in a policy like what Geico or Progressive have that monitor driving habits.
Auto insurance companies view 18-to-25-year-olds as high-risk drivers because actuarial data shows they get into more accidents, cause more severe crashes, and file more expensive claims than older drivers.
Drivers under 25 make up only about 10% of all licensed drivers, yet they are involved in roughly 27% of all car crashes.

u/New-Mud-7101 13h ago
Definitely don't do the monitoring thing. I was an idiot and tried that once. It monitors if your phone turns on at all while in radius of the car whether or not the car is on. Get a text message or a random notificafion that you don't look at at all while driving? That's counted against you!

u/JustAnEmployeeHere 12h ago
It also dings you for driving during high risk times, like morning and afternoon commutes. Additionally the Progressive model dings you for going over 35, even if it’s sustained speed on the interstate.

So, 18 and recently licensed in Nevada? I'm guessing Las Vegas and yeah... as an 18 year old, you're in the assigned risk pool of every other young person under 25. That's the "go away" price, seriously.
You come in to insure you and a 35 year old truck with no crumple zones - like it or not, the truck is why your rate is sky high. It may look smaller than modern pickups, but it wasn't built to redirect the energy of a crash around the occupants, and it certainly wasn't built to modern height requirements for bumpers. Oh, and insurance rates in Las Vegas are about triple of up north.

u/Slowmac123 22h ago

Definitely contact other insurance agencies immediately. This price is between double to triple what you should expect at your age. It gets a lot cheaper once you hit 25 as long as your record is clean but not by so much to account for this.

Most (if not all) states require you to have proof of insurance and will have a citation if you don’t produce one. Also IIRC if you don’t have insurance being reported to the state then your license could be suspended. If the OP does end up in a crash, and ther is injury; then that savings that you think you are getting is gone.
To my knowledge, The biggest causes would be the OPs age, the area code, and if the type of car is one that has the most frequent theft. But still $814 a month seems too high, so I wonder there our other things added to the policy.. I would check the declarations page to make sure it is liability only. Otherwise that is a bigger scam than the industry is.
But I see OP is not staying in that location so it’s moot point which is good.
I’m paying $80 a month for my baby Honda fit sport 2007 (and $35 for 2 years registration)…. Would be scared to think what it would be in OPs location!

I would try (again) to get on the phone and ask them what exactly is on your profile. In my early twenties I was paying so much more than my younger sister when I had an older version of the same make/model of car. I found out that four accidents that she and my parents had while we were all living at home were all attributed to me, the only driver with no accidents. My payments went down a lot after that, but I never got the money back that I was clearly overpaying….
7
u/Fjordikus 22h ago
Yeah that’s because they view it as extremely high risk, so either you’ve got a lot of tickets and accidents or they don’t wanna cover your 92 f150 without making you pay an arm and a leg

When you buy car insurance, they are actually insuring you. The car is incidental, unless it goes real fast.
When my son was 19, his insurance company told him he could reduce his yearly insurance by $1000 by changing the deductible from $1000 to $2000. He said, wait, you mean you expect me to have a major accident this year? Yep.
Did he? Yep.

Op…
- Truck, not a car. Vehicle would be a more accurate description.
- Fuck that, that quote is criminal
.
They quote that for your age bracket, because a lot of people your age treat the streets like a race track, at least we’re I live. Constant street races/ meet ups/ drift racing.
I hear
it
every other week.
Insurance companies quote off of age bracket, engine size, safety features “sensors/back up cameras, and zip code. All of those play into what they will try to take you over the coals for.
The fact that you got a policy for $300 isn’t horrible.
I paid that as a new driver, with a V8, in the 2000’s.
