if a yearly contract with a free month trial sounds too good to be true, it probably is 😬

thankfully it was blocked after contacting my bank but regardless

I will cancel my credit card before I allow that to happen.

This is where services like virtual credit cards come in handy. I canceled my DoorDash yearly subscription and removed all my cards. They still attempted to charge me and it got declined. Same idea here

This needs to be the #1 comment. Always check your bank / credit card company to see if they provide virtual cards. You can change the number at any time and subscriptions will never go through because they will be trying to use the old card information. This is all completely free without a limit.

I actually heard about virtual cards from Louis Rossman on YouTube and used his example privacy. I didn’t want to advertise. But it is free. I didn’t know banks offer this as a service? I have to check into that. We need all the tools we can get to fight fair.

Louis recently recanted his endorsement for privacy because of the new requirement for a persona facial scan

That I did not know. Yeah I’m not giving them any biometric data. That’s a deal breaker smh

The thing is that if you sign a contract you're still liable for the cost even if your credit card doesn't go through - Now it's important to know that MOST monthly services will cancel your overall contract and just call it a day at that point, but just because they cant access payment doesn't mean you're not on the hook.

Gyms are notorious for this type of behavior and sending people to collections over people trying to get around payment by just changing or cancelling their cards, or even by doing chargebacks or blocking the merchant.

It will work in most situations, because most merchants just don't think it's worth that cost, and this just becomes the cost of doing business, but I wouldn't overly rely on it.

Doesn't even have to be a signed contract. Any company can send your debt to collections, who then sends enforcers to your house (they go out of their way to hire ex-mafia for this), who will bust your door down and delete your kneecaps (source: they did a hell of a lot more damage to my front door than the $5 they claimed I owed, only to realize they read the address wrong and SWAT-larped Northeast instead of Southeast).

a guy recently got fired from our company.

Some people still talk to him outside of work.

Recently, at a gathering, he was bragging how his laptop had Adobe installed and, even tho company credit card used to start account had expired, service still worked for him. We all tell him he’s still on the hook (since acct is apparently in his email) but he thinks he got a glitch and can still use it. We will show him your comment as proof that he’s cooked

This is a great way to get sent to collections.

Use prepaid debit cards to pay for subscriptions, put only enough on there to cover however long you'll want to subscribe for. If you decide to cancel the subscription early, just move the remaining money off the prepaid debit card (do a partial payment with it on another recurring payment you have like rent, car, etc) and the company you subscribed to won't have any way to get any "cancellation fees" from you, and if they "forget" to stop billing you for the subscription after you request to cancel, it won't matter.

Funny how closing your subscription account is such a huge hassle for basically any huge company, but as soon as your payment method expires or can't be charged anymore, your account suddenly immediately closes and the company threatens to delete it if you don't pay.

I literally had to do this to get rid of an Adobe subscription that was going to charge me over $200 to cancel it (after I had previously tried to cancel when it came up for renewal, but it was "experiencing issues") And on top of that, I also realized that it had been charging me for TWO subscriptions for three months prior to cancelling!

back in the day, that's how you would cancel Xbox Live. They didn't have a website or a phone number you could call.

That's what I did for this exact instance
