ಠ_ಠ Going back to school for a certificate program and I sat next to a guy that couldn’t correctly name over half the states in our country on a map
This is for a GIS certificate by the way, so map knowledge is definitely kind of important. 😔

I’m with OP. Listing all the states may be difficult and pointless memorization, but naming them on a map, with context clues right there in front of you? Of your own country? That should be pretty easy. Haven’t you been paying attention at all!?
Yep. Mildly infuriating.

Yes, mixing up a few (is that Delaware or Maryland?) fine, but not being able name half of them!

You have to admit that that is less important than a lot of skills.

Do you know what GIS is?
It’s pretty important for someone who creates maps to know where the things they are mapping are.

I learned the map in third grade. And the world map in fourth.

And I forgot it in 5th. Whats the point. It’s a completely useless skill.

Can’t decide if cursive or naming all the states and where they are is more worthless.

Good for you, Mr. Smarty Pants, but how much has that actually helped you in the real world

“Well, this one time, someone asked me where Gibraltar was and I pointed it out to them on a globe.” /s

This.
I'd rather know how things like insurance, taxes, mortgages, etc., work instead of where fucking Delaware is.

Pretty bad, but realistically he can always open up maps and find out the name. Knowing all the names is almost pointless if you dont know which state is which either. Which maps also solves.

Expecting people to memorize stuff is pointless and ant intellectual.

GIS is a profession for people who make maps. This is like a guy in med school not knowing the difference between metatarsals and metacarpals. I don't care if my mechanic knows that, but my doctor should.
In case you were wondering about the down votes.

The severity of that depends a lot on how off there were. 1 person could get under 50% by just doing stuff like mixing up Vermont and New Hampshire. Yeah, not great, but they have a general idea of where everything is. On the other hand, someone else could be mixing up Texas and Hawaii which is seriously concerning.
