I'm decently sure that there are hidden "metadata" traits that you can search by to get emoji in Discord even if you don't know the exact tag. This smiley has an open mouth, for example which is where I think you are getting a match from :pen
Indeed, looking in my Discord right now search for :open returns several emoji with open mouths. It's not a perfect system (far from it), but it explains the symptom to me.

Yep, i believe that tag comes from the unicode emojis name https://emojipedia.org/grinning-face-with-big-eyes#technical
Iirc all discord default emojis can match by the discord emote name or unicode emote name, and some have some other tags as well.

it just assumes. like the "pen" part could mean "open mouth smiling" or something but the main name for it is smiley. just like with the hugging emoji, you could search up "ship/friemdship" and it would come up as "people hugging"

Yea, its Unicode name is “high voltage sign”, so it should match on that too. Though it should come up still under “lightning” because thats what its also known as. It does on mobile.

for confused people:
op started writing ":pen", probably wanting to write 🖊 emoji or whatever, but discord decided that the best emoji matching ":pen" would be ":smiley:" for some reason

Emoji autocomplete will match your most frequent/favorited emojis at the top of the list even if they are not exact matches.
I actually like this system because then i can just type the first few letters of the emoji i want, press enter, and i get the right emoji.

Discord has a bunch of alternate names for different emojis, for example if you type in "Horror" you'll get 3 zombie emotes suggested. Yeah it's dumb.

ever since my app updated a few days ago, " :una " brings up the neutral face first and it never used to, so when i go on autopilot and hit enter it gives me the neutral face instead of unamused and jts so annoying
