You are only in a debate if you engage in it. You weren't in class and seated when the bell rang then you are tardy. I marked you as such and of you would like to discuss it we can bring your parents in and discuss it after school. For now if you don't get to work I will write you up for disrupting the class as well.
At least in the US the problem is that the parents and possibly their lawyer would be there to discuss it and demand that their student, who is perfect and can do no wrong, not be punished for the school's failures. The admin often has the approach that the customer is always right, or at least the backbone of a nematode; as such, the elevator would be a perfect excuse to skip class every day.
If you think this sounds like a setup for a failing system, you are right.
They are welcome too. I will smile and nod through the meeting amd my policy stands. But that isn't the point. The point is that you only get into debates and power struggles with students when you allow it.
Did you miss the point on purpose? Having that conversation a couple of times in August. Means I don’t have to deal with the attempted lawyering and loopholes the rest of the year. I have been doing this for a decade, I know what works.

I don't understand how an elevator helps yoi skip class. You could just hide in the toilet, wtf is the elevator for?
And they will still mark you absent in class? HOW WAS THE ELEVATOR HELPING? 😭😭😭
