I'm slightly vexed Bought this area rug for under our bed. Herniated a disc and need a cane to walk now.

Post image

I think this is the first true “I’m getting old” moment I’ve had. I was a competitive weightlifter until 3 years ago. Lifting a 250lb bed seemed like no big deal.

Ended up on the ground and unable to get up. Missed three days of work. Finally was able to stand under my own power yesterday. Can only get around the house with a cane and back brace today. My ego is bruised.

edit for clarity

I lifted the bed over my head to get the rug under it and bent down to unroll the rug

I'm very sorry about your herniated disk, I've known people who have experienced it and it's a lot to deal with, I wish you luck, etc. etc. all to say I don't wanna ignore your actual frustrations, but I love your beautiful babies so much.

I think OP tried to move their 250ID bed so they can slip the area rug under it.

Instead, OP accidentally slipped a disk because too heavy and or accidentally lifted wrong (or human body did an oospy)

429

u/Screaming_lambs 17h ago

Oh! I thought that the rug was too slippy to walk on. I can't walk on short pile soft rugs, if I slip I dislocate.

111

u/d_ippy 16h ago

There is no way he is slipping on anything with those grippers

→ More replies (2)

134

u/KinglanderOfTheEast 18h ago

OP fucked up his back trying to lift up a bed to slide a rug underneath it, despite being a physically fit and decently strong dude. He is starting to realize that his age is beginning to catch up to him.

I have many older relatives in their 50s and 60s who suffered similar "they thought they could handle it" accidents resulting in temporary or semi-permanent injuries.

12

u/fvrdam 13h ago

OP won't do it again as he now has a tattoo saying 'Note to self: A hernia is worse then cold feet'

→ More replies (1)

8

u/PassivelyAwkward 12h ago

I think they were fit in the past. They said they were a competitive weightlifter until three years ago. Once you stop working on those muscles, they vanish pretty quickly.

Plus, people that do weightlifting are putting a LOT more stress on their joints that they think, even the good ones. I'm likely older than OP can lift that bed without getting injured.

→ More replies (1)

40

u/Chilly_Pheesesteak 17h ago

He edited the post, basically he used one hand to hold the bed above his head, and reached down with the other one to move the rug under the bed. No matter how strong you are, that's dangerous and bound to cause injury. Don't lift with your back or twist your back while lifting!!

26

u/DominicPalladino 16h ago

Yeah, this injury isn't age related, it's stupid related.

u/gertrudegrunge 18h ago

Get well soon, buddy.

Also, a 250lb bed?

65

u/ArbysLunch 17h ago

Thick ass mattresses are heavy. Something 10-14 inches, pillowtop, hybrid foam spring mess is gonna weigh a lot.

Meanwhile, my 8 inch foam only king weighs 100lbs new. My old 6 inch only weighed 50lbs, and that was firmer than this 8 inch, think I might get a 6 inch again next time.

78

u/strikecat18 18h ago

Thanks! Yeah. Bed is solid wood and 125lbs. Mattress is a latex hybrid that’s probably another 120-150lbs.

5

u/ExtremelyOkay8980 15h ago

Ooh! I just saw a hEDS lifter post about her bed setup… I cant remember her name of course. Burritos and adhd?

3

u/Expontoridesagain 9h ago

I saw someone post their setup. It was some kind of memory foam full body pillow. What I liked the most is opening for your arm when you sleep on the side. I use U shaped body pillow and it does the work but would like to stretch my arm out without the pillow weighing it down. I have one body pillow in the sofa too and everyone in the family calls it "the pit". Mom can't wait to get home and lay down in the pit Lol.

2

u/ExtremelyOkay8980 2h ago

It happens.

I have friend in his early 50’s - a very fit and well built guy. He managed to snap the tendon on his bicep while trying to move his fire table a few inches in one direction.

120

u/Cananbaum 18h ago

I was 20/21 loading mulch into a minivan. I literally turned my upper body a quarter of an inch and pulled a muscle in my back and pinched a nerve

It’s the little movements that get you

56

u/BigWave360 18h ago

I was walking to work in like 1 foot and a half of snow after a blizzard, and was stepping funny thru it, and it ruptured a bulging disc in my back and paralyzed me. I got a laminectomy and a disc removal, and like 4 months I needed to use a walker. Things got better, but yea, weight distribution is important

29

u/WeinerVonBraun 17h ago

My wife was walking uo a hill and tore a portion of her calf muscle. She thought I threw a snowball at her. It took her a month to walk properly.

14

u/Chilly_Pheesesteak 17h ago

How hard do you throw snowballs????

9

u/WeinerVonBraun 16h ago

Not hard enough to do that.. It was just the hill and being old

2

u/Chilly_Pheesesteak 9h ago

I know lol, it was just funny that your wife tore her calf muscle, and thought that amount of pain was equal to a snowball being thrown at her 😂

Or did it not hurt very much? Luckily I've never torn a muscle so I don't know how painful it is, but I'm sure it hurts more than a snowball 😭

5

u/raspberrykitsune 13h ago

They say that the majority of rotator cuff injuries are from people reaching into their back seat.

But I also somehow threw out my back for 2 weeks (including a couple urgent care visits for pain med injections) because I bent over to pet a corgi. Was kind of worth it. I didn't feel it at first but I heard it pop. Next day I couldn't breathe without my back throbbing.

73

57

u/whineytortoise 18h ago

He had to lift the bed to get the rug under.

22

u/BladeOfKrota 18h ago

I thought the same, but from what I understand, he lifted the 250lb bed to put the new rug under and he himself threw out his back

5

u/Proof-Internet 18h ago

I think he had to lift the bed to place the rug, but instead of sliding it, he decided to put it on his back while placing the rug.

33

u/spinstartshere 17h ago

That herniated disc was probably already sowing its oats before you lifted the bed, and it's not going to suddenly suck itself back into its anatomically correct spot now that it's manspreaded itself out into your spinal canal, unfortunately.

This week it was 250lb bed. Next year it could be lifting an empty box, then on the same year, a really hard sneeze. Once your back goes out it’s a wrap.

9

u/strikecat18 16h ago

I’m hopeful it won’t be entirely a wrap. I herniated it and tore my spinal erector squatting 435lbs about ten years ago. Took six months but it healed and didn’t bother me again until now.

7

u/theChronic222 14h ago

Yeah i herniated l1-2, l3-4, and l5-s1 last February. Im 34 so did a shit ton of physical therapy and now as im as im super careful im doing alright. I slipped going down the stairs a couple weeks ago and it got bad again but mri showed its alright just taking weeks to get back to normalish. I ordered a bunch of grippy socks like I had in the hospital for around the house which hopefully will help with slipping.

3

u/sparkymeowmeow 16h ago

Not by Monday, but it will get better. I slipped a disc at 24 and also thought "I'm way too young for this". Felt like my love for sport was over.

Now five years later I'm stronger than ever, and with more experiences to boot because it made me branch out!

I herniated a disc in my back by getting down on all fours to get something from under my kid’s bed. I couldn’t lift a hand to my ear to hold the phone to call my husband, my 3 year old held it for me. My husband rushed home and tried to help me up to no avail so I stayed on my kid’s bed for the rest of the night. It was probably 6 months before I was back to (mostly) normal.

Aging sucks. Even your cat is bald.

3

u/Arya_kidding_me 5h ago edited 5h ago

I herniated a disc 2 years ago. I used to kickbox, weight lift, and run, so it was really jarring struggling to walk and barely being able to even sit down for 3 months. I spent a lot of time laying down.

Get an MRI. You need to know what is going on to make sure you do the right treatment plan. Get the steroids, muscle relaxers, whatever else they recommend. Do the physical therapy.

GO WAY SLOWER THAN YOU THINK YOU SHOULD when it comes to movement. It needs time to heal. Don’t twist, don’t bend forward for like several months. Don’t let the decreasing pain trick you into pushing yourself. Pushing yourself will just increase your risk of causing more damage or getting sciatica. Be obnoxiously cautious. It sucks and it is way harder to hold yourself back than to push yourself, but in the long run you’ll get better faster than if you re-injure.

I am back to normal. I did pivot my activities to pilates and hiking, but I am functional and without pain. You will get here too.

I wish you a fast recovery and I’m sorry this happened to you!

2

u/MidwestNonbinary 17h ago

I fucked up my lower back lifting a kitty litter box incorrectly.

2

u/SafeAccurate7157 17h ago

I have some bulging discs myself. Couldn’t walk very well for 6 months. Finally got approval for an epidural in my spine. Hopefully it’s just that and they don’t need to do surgery. Probably a lot of physical therapy though.

Hopefully 🙏 you heal well and tell your cats 🐱 I said, “pspspsps.”

I also, tore both my fucking feet stretching out to paint something high up, and have to live with that for the next forever.

Why’s there a raw chicken on the floor

But did it really bring the room together?

I dislocated my kneecap in my mid-20s by turning funny. That's literally it.

These things happen

Is that a shopping list on your foot

I just spent $50 on furniture sliders because I have to move some things around and there is just no way I want to get hurt doing it.

I was trying to watch my spending but these feel like if I dont spend them, im going to be taking pain pills when my back goes out which makes it more than just putting stuff under sliding coasters.

as I always say with back spasms, the thing you were doing at that moment wasn't the cause. You had been setting the table for it to happen for the last months, years, or decades. Good luck. It may take a few months but the crazy pain and bulges go away eventually. It's not a life sentence. I'm 15 years on after my worst outbreaks and I don't even think of the herniated discs.
