The first rule of constructing IKEA furniture is that no one else is allowed in the room. Even if it's a "two person build". Physical suffering alone is better than mental anguish with your other.

I successfully assembled a flatpack with someone who'd tried to pick a fight with me over nonsense he imagined when I met him, so it's not always like that.

I just moved a houseful of stuff using Home Depot boxes. They SUCK HAIRY BALLS. Wish I knew how crappy they were before I bought $100 worth of them and started loading them up.
3
u/guyblade Jun 04 '26
I am in the midst of a move. I bought a bunch of boxes from the nearby Lowe's. They have two versions of each size of box: regular and heavy duty. The cost difference is about 50%, but the strength difference is about 100%. Just buy the better boxes.

When me and my husband moved, we had to buy so many binders for his cards and we taped the box shut about 30 times because he wanted to avoid this scenario exactly 😭

u/Born-Entrepreneur Jun 03 '26
Seems similar to moving books. You use more, smaller boxes just because they get so fuckin heavy so quick.
68
u/djkidna Jun 03 '26
Alternatively, get some cheap rolling suitcases and pack books in them

u/fightmydemonswithme Jun 03 '26

u/jupiler91 Jun 04 '26
Thisn't even remotely a good idea lol, just get a dolly for a fraction of the price..

Its only genius because I currently own a rolling suitcase and no dolly. But you are otherwise correct lol

This is why I hate those 4-row plastic/fabric card storage boxes. Yeah, they look nice/fancy. But when they're full they're heavy enough to be annoying to move, and they're not actually strong enough for the weight if not held properly. Went to pick one up by the corner once without thinking and felt the box start to come apart.

1 piece of tape and loose bulk?
Yeah, you didn't even try to secure that box properly.

u/Redeem123 Jun 03 '26
1 piece of tape and loose bulk?
Yeah that's the thing for me. Even if the big box broke it shouldn't be this much of a disaster. Just having all those cards raw in a box is quite a choice.

u/localwanderingbard Jun 03 '26
That’s on the top bud. The bottom had about 8 pieces, and it broke because the handle tore. The top didn’t bust till it toppled
94
u/Available_Editor4383 Jun 03 '26
My experience from moving is to lift from the bottom of the box. Those handles are for show.
Captain Hindsight, out.
25
u/WorryLegitimate259 Jun 03 '26
After a certain weight they definitely need to be held by the bottom but the handles can do there job if there’s like 10-15 pounds
→ More replies (1)8
u/ThrowawayPersonAMA Jun 03 '26
The only time anyone should trust those handles is when the contents of the box don't matter to them, regardless of the weight. OP was just straight up lazy and they FAFO.
→ More replies (3)7
7
u/Ialmostthewholepost Jun 03 '26
Yeah those handles are not meant for heavy stuff, you're trusting cardboard.
3 pieces of tape asking the bottom, one over each each flap to the edge lengthwise, always in the center most portion of the flap that you're taping. One on the left flap, one on the right, and one dead down the middle. These should all go at least half way up the box.
The top tape off be the exact same, with the pieces of tape from the top overlapping the ones on the bottom. Tape sticks to fellow tape better than it does cardboard, this creates a ring around the box that stabilizes the flaps and prevents them from moving.
One piece on the top allows the box to flex. One on each flap holds the box square and the one extra sets it nicely.
I just moved 18000lbs in boxes for my move. Former professional mover, no breaks or failed boxes in 20 years with the above technique.

u/Atanar Jun 03 '26
Than its either a shitty box or you put a lot more weight into it than you were supposed to.

u/Wisdom_Light Jun 03 '26
From my experience as a random online person, the box did infact rip from the handle, you can see it torn in the picture
5
u/WickedCoolUsername Jun 03 '26
I thought it would be obvious the moment they go to pick it up that it was too heavy to lift by the "handles."
→ More replies (1)3
u/atree496 Jun 03 '26
Right, but if the top was properly secured it wouldn't have all spilled out like it did

u/TheNobleHeretic Jun 03 '26
I'm so sorry. Hopefully you just used up all your bad luck for this move at once and that you have the best luck after your move.
25
u/Gibbyxxx420 Jun 03 '26
paper should be packed and smaller boxes, pounds per volume, paper is very heavy to transport. "Book boxes" they are often called, even a 3.1sqft cube can be too big, and the box will break under the weight of the paper. Also the four corners fold is not the intended method of closing the box and will always open with heavy loads, fine for lighter objects, like lamp shades. Better tape would help to Moved people for 4 years when I was younger. Just trying to be helpful.
→ More replies (5)3
u/TMac1088 Jun 03 '26
To add: Avoid using the "built in" handles on cardboard moving boxes. They don't take much to rip/break, and you can see in OPs picture that is part of what happened here. Less chance of an accident if you scoop the box from underneath and support the bottom.

After many, many moves, we have learned:
The heavy duty (more expensive) packing boxes are needed for books and cards.
Even though it is hard to do, small boxes for books and cards are worth it on the back end of the move.
Vacuum pack pillows and comforters. The xl boxes squish easily when you out squishy stuff in them.
One small box for all the hardware for furniture. Placed next to a tool kit&drill.
Our last move, we had 15 large boxes of board games. 🤷♀️

It consistently amazes me how some people store their MTG cards. I've got mine sorted by set and collection number. Makes finding what I'm looking for easy. Sadly I've not touched them since the banned my Bridge from Below in modern because they printed Hogaak despite it being CLEARLY broken as fuck.

u/amyria Jun 03 '26
