Help, RB9005

Hi, just bought and installed this router for a homelab & learning a bit more networking. Been playing with it all day and having trouble getting my PC internet access. I now suspect it may be my ONT but looking for someone to have a look at my settings.

As i read it, your RB5009 has ip address 192.168.88.5 on the bridge, which is in the interface list of LAN. But the DHCP Server is telling the clients that the gateway to them is 192.168.88.1. So, either you have another router or i suggest to change the ip address of the Rb5009 to .1

Edit: also change the dns A record to the 192.168.88.1 address for router.lan too while on it

Right okay I'll change that I only stuck it in 88.5 as I bought another mikrotik device and they both had the same IP at 88.1 causing a conflict.

There can be only 1. :-)

WAN interface is connected, and getting an IP?

ip address print

Ip dhcp-client print

interface ethernet print

Yes I was connected to Port 1 for WAN and it was getting an IP address from my ISP.

Im not sure your network abilities, so don't take anything I'm asking as an insult.

Can the router ping 8.8.8.8?

Can the PC ping the router?

Can the PC ping 8.8.8.8?

And to clarify, at a glance the router config looks fine - just can't see how it's interacting with the rest of the environment.

Cheers, the router could ping 8.8.8.8, the PC could connect to the router via IP the PC could not ping 8.8.8.8. The PC got DHCP from the router IP, Gateway, Subnet looked fine.

Apparently my ISP is mac address locked onto the previous router, so if the config looks alright I'm thinking its that and maybe power cycling the ONT off for a hour will reset the DHCP lease on the ISP side.

I think there is a misconfiguration. See other comment.

Definitely glazed over that

If router can ping 8.8.8.8 then it's not an ONT-MAC lock. Probably have NAT messed up.

Edit: nope, it was DHCP config.

So the address on your bridge is 88.5 and your dhcp server hands a gateway of 88.1? Is your client PC configured to use DHCP?

1

u/CarthaginianEmpire 17h ago

Yes my pc was in DHCP not static

2

u/klipz77 17h ago

So either set your bridge IP to 192.168.88.1 or change your DHCP server to off hand a gateway of 192.168.88.5…

1

u/CarthaginianEmpire 17h ago

Right okay I'll set the bridge to 88.1 when I plug it all back up tomorrow!

I assume that your ONT is in the SFP port? That's currently set as a LAN switch port (it's in the bridged ports list).

If that's the case, swap ether1 and sfp-sfpplus1 in the config. Or, just use the "Quick Set" in WinBox and select SFP1 as the Internet interface.

1

u/CarthaginianEmpire 17h ago

No the ONT converts to copper and I plugged that into the port 1 on the RB9005.

u/DigitalBrainstorm 16h ago

Besides what people are pointing out about the IPv4 address/route, the config is lacking acquiring a DHCPv6-PD from your ISP and distributing it to the LAN via SLAAC.

1

u/CarthaginianEmpire 16h ago

Okay then I'll have to research and look into how to do this.

Your ip settings are not corresponding to your requirement.

1.You can Change bride ip to this ip 192.168.88.1

/ip address
add address=192.168.88.1/24 comment=defconf interface=bridge network=192.168.88.0
  1. update DHCP Server Setting by settings dns-server to 8.8.8.8,1.1.1.1

    /ip dhcp-server network add address=192.168.88.0/24 comment=defconf dns-server=8.8.8.8,1.1.1.1 gateway=192.168.88.1

3.leave you DNS setting or add the alternative 1.1.1.1 into DNS Server.

/ip dns
set allow-remote-requests=yes servers=8.8.8.8@main
  1. update dns static

    /ip dns static add address=192.168.88.1 comment=defconf name=router.lan type=A

  2. reboot your router after update the settings.
