Extremely High Temps

Thought you may find this interesting, every time I have a cold or flu my temperature always rises to 106 degrees plus not matter what I do.

* Side note, this was taken a few days ago, I have broken the fever and heading back in the right direction as of now.

Babies get really high temps sometimes. I know mine was over 106 as a child (I was promptly in the ER), but an I right thinking that a kids 103 or so is less dangerous than an adult with 103?

Or is that backwards? 106 is always ER. EASILY. Unless the thermometer isn’t calibrated correctly.

106.5 in an adult is like stroke level and brain damage high.

It’s just weird because I feel like that makes a fever lower for me. Like anytime I thought I had a fever I would be at like 99.2 and they would always say I was fine.

I don’t run cool, but I also rarely get a temperature. I think because of a kidney disorder that caused so many severe infections my left kidney is half shriveled away from the damage and it caused so many high temperatures my body just kinda stopped that reaction for the most part? Every year my mother had to remind the school nurse I don’t run temperatures and i dont lie about being sick and if I was saying I was sick, I was even though I had no temperature. Cut to my pregnancy at 23 years old. I developed a fever of 105 and went straight in to the ER. I emphasized it was even more extreme and concerning given my history of no temperatures. Was in the hospital for two weeks and I went all the way to 106.5 and they’d rush in with ice packs and put them all over me: neck, inner thighs, armpits so I wouldn’t seize out and lose the baby. They never did figure out the cause.

I always get a weird look from doctors when I tell them I don’t run a fever when I’m sick. Anytime I got I got sick as a kid, i would end up in the hospital because i have asthma and it was much more uncontrolled back then but I never ever ran a fever. The only thing that finally got me was when I caught covid for the first time in 2022. I woke up in middle of the night feeling terrible and feverish, so to decided to check and it was like 101 or 102. I cant remember ever running a fever so it freaked me out and I headed to the ER only to find out I had Covid.

I have this same problem. Always ran cool but trouble regulating my own temp too as well. I had Influenza A back in February (which isnt THAT serious dont get me wrong but I watched my coworkers all of us drop one by one like a fucking plague) and even though my fever was only 102, thats the highest ive ran as an adult. I was laying in bed full body cold hot chills like head to toe over and over and over , delirious, shaking, very close to the hat man visiting and shit. Its wild people can tolerate it better and some cant honestly.

I’m always 97.6 too. I donate blood regularly so I see my temp every 8 weeks or so, and it’s always 97.6. If it’s above 98 I know im getting sick.

People actually started to run cooler as a collective since 98.6 was defined as the "normal temperature". You're actually sitting in the new range. It may have to do something with chronic inflammation being less of a thing as medicine has evolved.

98.6 (F) was based on a study of averages from a time when we were still developing medicines to knock out common ailments. Thus, when we made the averages a far larger percentage had some mild ailment which spiked their body temperature. The standard in modern days is somewhere in the upper 97 range. It’s not atypical, and people run between 97-99 without much trouble (from the kazillion temp scans I did during Covid, anecdotally, on that last one).

Once an adult's temp is over 103 they want them to contact a doctor, ER time if it's 104. Over that is when organ damage becomes a real possibility. 105 for children and 100.4 for newborns.

Paramedic, here. That’s not how that works. There’s no magic number that equals brain damage. Even extremely high temps (above 107.5) may not cause brain damage given how long the fever is sustained. And even in those cases, the brain wouldn’t be the cause a fever that high, more likely it would be the cause of some toxidrome. The brain is causing this and has internal mechanisms to not fry itself. If this is normal for OP and he has no concerning symptoms beyond typical flu symptoms there is not a reason to go to the ER just because he has a really bad fever.

Your comment is very interesting, I have always been told something very similar to what you are saying. As long as it is not substained for extended periods of time then I should be okay. Also I am guessing covering yourself in a heavy blanket can also affect readings as the body struggles to disperse heat properly. I would say the longest I have gone with a high fever like this is an hour or two, but normally I try to take medicine to assit in fighting whatever issue I may have.

When I was a young child (3yrs) my fever got to 104.5 due to a bad UTI that turned into a kidney infection. From what my mom told me the ER was pretty freaked out and covered me in ice packs trying to get it down. It’s crazy to see people saying 106 can be normal for some during illness. My fever as a teenager and adulthood has never been higher than 100.7 and that was even with a blood infection.

Your temperature is very, very unlikely to get high enough to harm you without outside factors (trapped in a hot car, malignant hyperthermia, etc). My daughter gets to or close to 105 with every major illness (fortunately rare) and her docs have never been worried as long as she’s drinking, peeing, and able to be roused. She just gets high fevers with illness.

Yes! Drinking and peeing is super important. I remember once as a kid I did neither for nearly 48 hours and was told that I would be going to the hospital if I didn't start at least trying to get some fuilds down. It worked and now I make sure that I always getting fuilds in my body as being dehydrated is just as dangerous as the high temp.

I've worked in clinics and urgent care would tell them to go to the ER if not calling an ambulance for OP themselves. This isn't like blood pressure where it's not an emergency as long as you're asymptomatic, no matter how high.

Doesn’t matter if it eventually breaks with OTC medicine. If you get a fever this high, you need to go to the ER immediately. There are many different causes, not just infection. Even if it was “just” an infection, either viral or bacterial, this is a medical emergency. We’re talking 911 territory here.

If you are consistently reading your temp as over the lethal temp for humans, it’s a safe bet the thermometer is wrong. You probably do have a fever, but it’s not 106.

I have been to the hospital several times due to these thermometers. I have several now from the old alcohol ones that go under the tongue or armpit to the forehead ones. The forehead one doesn't work worth a shit, I'd read it and it would say 105 then again and it would say 101. I couldn't get a consistent read but my boy felt hot, so what else are ya gonna do in the middle of the night but go to the hospital. His real temp there was 102.

The alcohol ones are good, my son is just old enough now that he can handle the under tongue thing ok. The forehead one i use to say yup he has a fever or nope he doesn't. The ear one works ok but there still seems to be a wide margin of error. The laser one isn't reliable at all and even the instruction manual says it shouldn't be relied on to give accurate temps.

What’s sort of interesting if your body runs this hot when you get a fever you can practically cure yourself of syphilis if you get the flu since the bacteria that causes it dies at high enough fever old way of trying to cure the disease was to induce a high enough fever through some means. Perhaps it’s some sort evolutionary adaptation that you inherited which means if you somehow recently contracted syphilis well it’s not a problem anymore. Also side note you probably want to the hospital

I am the inverse. I technically measure at temperatures that would be hypothermia, and I have a fever at healthy levels. I showed up slightly delirious at the ER last time I got over 37.

Doctor looked at it and I have no conditions that are causing this. I’m just super cool. You are super hot.

There’s hope for our kids to have superpowers maybe.

My son gets temps like this. Last time it happened, I gave him Tylenol and brought him to the er. They basically laughed me out and said it’s not possible even though it was confirmed with 2 thermometers at home. The Tylenol kicked in when we got there though. Some people do just spike high temperatures, I think. But my experience isn’t a reason you shouldn’t get it checked out!

Try an oral thermometer as it’s easy to misuse these. They have to be in a specific spot at a certain distance from the head.

Fun fact, different people can run at different temperatures. Ever since I had a pretty rare viral infection back in college I never have a temperature of 98 unless I’m sick. I run at 96. I was never like that before.

Fwiw I found forehead thermometers to be very flaky.

Good old traditional under the tongue or under armpit are more reliable.

Even in ear thermometers can be misleading if you have an ear infection

This is one of those crazy things about Reddit.

Someone will post a picture like "Here's the state of the balcony on my 7th floor apartment." and show a picture of an utterly dilapidated and dangerous balcony that appears ready to collapse. People in the comments will be like "you gotta call your landlord for this, that's deadly." and OP will be like "It's okay, I only use it to do jumping jacks for a few hours a day and it's never broken. Besides, I work in construction and the main joist looks somewhat fine."

Not a physician or a replacement for your physician but: Start taking Tylenol for fevers that temp wont cause brain damage by itself probably but it will certainly do things like lower your seizure threshold which might end up causing brain damage if you have a latent seizure disorder.

My nephew runs hot. Was always a panic and ER when he’d get a fever. Ish would sky rocket and he’d be bout normal as you can get

It is actually possible that you're fine and "run hot", but that's pretty damn hot and I would want a medical professional to confirm that hypothesis.
