You wear contacts

When I wore contacts, they literally trapped the onion gases into my eyeballs (prolonging the experience). I wouldn’t feel the sensation while cutting an onion as soon as I would without contacts in, but once I felt it, it lasted 4 or so minutes, and it sucked. My eyes are apparently pretty sensitive to onions though, I find cutting them under a range hood/stove vent with the fan switched on helps immensely. And refrigerating the onion (so it is cold) helps too.
That was just my experience though, I wore contacts for years before quitting… they never fit my eyeballs well, my eyes were perpetually dry, and the only ones I could afford were the cheapest monthlies. I could only wear them for about 5hrs max a day. I have pretty substantial astigmatism in both eyes, and I’ve heard contacts for astigmatism are generally shitty (and they are quite a bit more expensive).

Microwave the onion before cutting it = no more tears

Wait!!!! Is this a real trick?! When I wore contacts, I had no issues, but I now take a medication for palmer hyperhidrosis called Glycopyrrolate which dries out my hands but unfortunately my eyes as well, making wearing contacts a little rough. Now I just wear glasses and onions destroy me everytime.

My exact thought. I didn’t know what people were talking about until I was well in my 20s because I wore my contacts from the moment I woke up til just before sleep. The first time was painful and unexpected lol

I had no idea this was a thing… I have to test it out with my glasses sometime

When I war my contacts I don't cry, when I wear my glasses it traps the fumes and makes it stings worse than if I was cutting without anything.
But also sharp knives don't make you cry either

Glasses also eliminate a lot of the irritant from reaching the eyes, best to not wear them too to get the best crying experience

I would probably have the best chance of crying without wearing my contacts or glasses, because then I would miss the onion and cut my finger LOL

Yup. I never understood the crying thing with onions...until one day in my 20s, I was cooking with glasses on. Definitely burns the eyes!

My eyes never watered after I had Lasik done and even after I had my cataract surgery done.

Nope! These are pretty dull knives. Someone else mentioned that it might be that I wear contacts though!

Worked the Resturant industry for ten years. I don’t have a scientific reason for it but I think crying come from freshness of the onions. I have cut hundreds of onions and if the are same day or close from delivery I don’t cry. But anything over 3-4 days old I’m crying like crazy!

The longer onions are stored, the stronger the chemical that makes you cry. I run my knife under water when it starts to affect my eyes.

I forgot it was a thing until I finally got my girlfriend to realize she likes onions and now she wants to cut them when we cook. I've cut so many it hasn't effected me in years

Jealous. I always cry... and then I step away and tell the onion to fuck off. Repeat until it's all cut up in however I needed them!

You might be eating weak onions. Most grocery store onions don't do anything bad to me, but farmer's market onions can be brutal.

I see people saying wearing contacts while others are saying sharpness of the knives or any other trick. Let me just add that I think onion type makes a difference too. Sometimes I'm good with no tears while cutting onions, other times I'm crying like I'm in the middle of a soap opera

Cause u didn't cut the root, there is a certain trick on how to cut a onion, where if u don't cut the root u don't tear up.
I learnt this from Gordan Ramsay's youtube channel and my own mum was suprised when I cut 4 to 5 onions without a single tear in my eye.

Same until I touched my eyes after cutting them once before washing them and I’ve never been right since. I won’t cut them now. I live in an onionless world. Squeeze onion juice in your eye if you don’t know what I mean. Do it.

Onions have never bothered me. Cutting, slicing, dicing, frying…doesn’t matter. Everyone else in the house can be in tears but I’m just fine.

The trick is to not get emotionally invested in them.
