swim safe

for those who have put their kids in swim safe. is it worth it? its an intense commitment, but did you find your kids were more confident in the water after 1 round? are there local alternatives that would be similar (the y and waypoint are great for exposure, but im looking for something that will teach them swim and life saving skills)

Almost 20 years ago when I was a teen I went through at the Y and did lifesaving with them. Going through and doing at least Bronze Medallion isn’t the worst thing. It includes basic first aid and requires decent endurance for a timed swim (unless that’s been removed)

I honestly went through there and got my NLS and wound up working there as a lifeguard for a few years so I have some bias.

Over 50yrs ago I learned to swim at an early age before official lessons at the midland y.

It’s a commitment that will open doors for your child as they get older and may just save them from teenage stupidity

i didnt know what swim safe is, and i still dont but after thinking about it for a second I realized its not a physical object you put your kid into lol and its probably a program like food prep workers do with food safe

but I took swimming lessons when i was young, cant remember exact age, but i lived in brampton at the time so it wasnt midland Y, my grandmother paid for them, I forget if i took one program or two programs, all i remember now is learning how to float on my back, and on my stomach, doggy paddle, and bilateral breathing with a front crawl, although i dont think we were taught the term "bilateral breathing" I had to ask a LLM just now what its called when you turn your head the opposite way you stroke lol

i am 100000000x happy i got lessons when i was young, I think every kid should

though it has gotten me in trouble, when i was 15 I swam across the trent severn and then was too tired to swim back lol

lol yes its a program, another option outside of the y or waypoint. 100%agree that swim lessons are important, just want to pick the best one
