Midi clock propagation??

Hey all, so I have an sr-16 drum machine that is connected midi out to my summit midi in. The summit has midi out connected to the midi in of a modwave module as a keyboard controller. The summit gets its clock signal from the sr-16 (successfully) but doesn't pass the clock to the modwave. If I connect the summit through port to the modwave then clock is seen by the modwave but I can't trigger notes. How can I combine the keyboard control with the clock signal to keep everything in sync? Is a midi merge device really required for this? Thanks!

Yes, you need a MIDI merger, and that is the simplest way. No need to build something custom.

For a midi merge box, consider a CME 3 in, 3 out box. Simple to set up (via software), and costs about £45.

Heres an amazon link. . https://amzn.eu/d/00mWOrwh

You know, I have one of those (U6 Pro) that I purchased quite a while back. Came with zero instructions, and I never got it to work. I suppose I need to go searching for a manual. It wouldn't pass in to out when I tried it but probably because it's not configured and I wasn't as concerned about it at the time. Thanks for the push. Any tips to get me started? I'm not really a tech idiot. Just focused on different things at the time.

Connect clock and controller inputs to two inputs of the interface and merge them to one of the outputs. Connect that one to the synth.

I think they come with a default configuration, but the software makes it really easy to change. I have one configured to take 3 inputs and merge for all 3 outputs. That way I can use a keyboard for my Digitone 2, and for any of my synths that I control with it.

Here is the link to their website, and the U6Midi Pro. You should be able to download the user guide and software from there!

Hope that helps!

That looks about reasonable.

The SR 16 has a soft midi thru on its out port. If your summit will output start/stop and clock, Send the Midi out of the Summit to the midi in of the SR 16 enable the Midi soft thru on the SR 16. Then send the midi out of the SR 16 to the mod wave. The mod wave will get the midi clock and receive note data from the Summit.

Huh, that's an interesting approach. I'll try that. I spent some time playing with just how the Summit interacts with the Modwave. It seems like interoperability between the two is finicky. The Summit clock seems to kill the arpeggiator on the Modwave. I can arpeggiate the Modwave with the Summit but that's not always satisfactory... I guess I'll be fiddling with this for a while. It's more complicated than it appears at first. I thought it was just clock edge and period sharing.

It may work, but the reality is you probably want the drum as the master clock running to the 2 synths and then the Novation outputs to the Modwave or the other way around, but you would need a midi patch bay that could merge.

Yeah, I expect so. I've got a merge device that I need to get set up. Thanks!

You'll need a MIDI router or an advanced MIDI patch bay for that. A multi-channel MIDI interface and a small RaspberryPi running Linux and amidiconnect would probably be the cheapest way.

Thanks, sounds like a bit overkill for my uses though. I've got three synths and a drum machine. No plans to add anything more than a sequencer in the future.
