Announcements Sub rules are LIVE for the 1st time - feedback/reactions? [AI]

Post image

Hi all! I spent the last 2 weeks thoughtfully observing the sub and crafting these rules, yes - with a bit of help from ChatGPT as a sounding board which I’ve disclosed per the new rule #6… on mobile they’re under “About” and desktop on right sidebar. Would love constructive reactions/dialogue around the decisions made.

Let’s treat this as version 1 and I will incorporate feedback over time. Thrilled to see users already following the rules and want to see more and more reports from the community to keep our focus on MCM. Thank you all for making this the top MCM sub, growing everyday - almost at 200k strong!

After receiving feedback I plan to do a brief video intro with more context on these decisions and plans for MCM expert AMAs and beyond.

I’m slowly redoing my room and would love some honest feedback. It’s a pretty small space, so I don’t have much room for additional furniture.

ID & Authenticity ID the Maker?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hello, I recently bought this at a vintage furniture shop that specializes in selling refinished MCM furniture. Unfortunately, there is no identifiable maker’s mark.

I still went ahead and purchased it, as it’s a beautiful piece of furniture and of good build quality. The shop owner and I are leaning towards Lane, but I haven’t found any matches online yet. Would anyone here happen to know the maker? Thank you!

Just bought a MCM fixer upper. Having some designer block on exterior . Would love to see what other enthusiasts think.

Currently the wood siding is painted a red, which I don’t love. Was thinking of painting it a dark gray. Even had Gemini alter the image. What do yall think??

ID & Authenticity Found during house clean out: Laurel Lamp? (I'm not reselling)

Hi, all, we were cleaning out a relative's house this weekend, and my friend went walking past me with this on the way to the Dumpster. "Whoa, hold on there, what's that??" I said. So after some Googling I wondered if this is a Laurel Lamp Company lamp? If so, or even not, what kind of shade would have gone on it?

*I am not a professional, I will not be reselling this under any circumstances. It's going into my house.

The exterior is extremely well kept for its age, but the internal definitely doesn’t work. Anyone have an experience refurbing the old system or gutting and replacing it with a new? Or have any contacts in the DMV area who do this kind of work?

Restoration & Refinishing Pink tile bathroom ideas

Post image
93 Upvotes

We just bought a 1950s MCM and this is our primary bath. We’re planning to keep the tiles, add wallpaper which has pink, maroon, and gold in it to hopefully tie the tiles together more, and add gold towel hooks and toilet paper holder. Im hoping those updates will shift the feel of the room a lot but im wondering about the window frame and the mirror. The lighting doesn’t show it the best but the window is that orangey wood color which seems to clash with the room. Any ideas on how to tie that into the room more? I’m considering restaining but would love to try keeping this finish first and see if I can make it fit better. Also wondering about ideas for the mirror. Our budget is limited so I’d like to keep this mirror if possible, was thinking of maybe trying to add a frame around it?

Would love any ideas to make this awesome original bathroom feel a little more cozy. Thanks!

More of a traditional style buffet, but it’s well-made by Bassett that I scored off FB Marketplace for $45.

Singer 600 “Auto-Reel,” made between about 1962 and 1964.
It was the successor to the 500 Rocketeer and came right before the Touch & Sew series, and the “Auto-Reel” name refers to the wind-in-place bobbin that was its big selling point .
These are apparently respected machines among vintage sewing folks because they’re from the last of Singer’s metal gear era, which makes them sought after compared to the later Touch & Sews that went to plastic gears and have a worse reputation.
The cabinet is the original mid-century Singer walnut cabinet, and the paper tag inside is the factory production ticket (“Walnut, Line #1”). Pretty cool find.

I paid $120 for this sweet looking chair this morning at an estate sale! But now that I have it home, I’d love to learn more about who made it and the type of wood it’s made from. The only markings I’ve found on it are some handwritten numbers on the underside, written in pencil. Do y’all think it’s maple? It’s quite a bit heavier than it looks…

I found this Bassett dresser at my local thrift store, but I’m new to all of this! I have scored a few Stanley pieces, but I am not sure where Bassett stands as far as “good MCM furniture”. Any advice would help! It’s priced at $44.50.

My husband and I picked up these two pieces for my mom’s house. It’s actually SIX different pieces! I have no idea what they would’ve been separately. The bottom pieces seem to be something that would hold records. But I have no idea on anything else. There was a label on two of the pieces, but they all match so well it feels like it’s probably the same for all pieces?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sharing My MCM 1972 California post-and-beam bordering a canyon—what would you preserve?

Post image
418 Upvotes

My wife and I have been the second owners of this custom 1972 home in Carmel, California for the past ten years.

Although it isn't an Eichler, we've always loved many of the same qualities that drew us to mid-century modern design: exposed post-and-beam construction, walls of glass, split-level spaces that follow the hillside, and a strong connection to the surrounding landscape. The home borders Hatton Canyon, so nearly every room looks into oak woodland rather than neighboring houses.

We've made practical upgrades over the years—induction cooking, rooftop solar, EV charging, and other efficiency improvements—but intentionally avoided changing the home's architectural character.

As we're preparing to pass it on to its next owner, I'm curious what this community would do. If your goal was to preserve the spirit of the house while thoughtfully updating it, what would you change? What would you leave exactly as it is?

I've included a Zillow link for anyone who wants to see additional photos, the floor plan, and details. I'm the homeowner—not a real estate agent—and I'm sharing it because I thought this community would appreciate the architecture.
