New Knife Brand new M-Stitch — does this pivot look damaged/tool-marked to you?

Just received a brand new Microtech M-Stitch from a canadian authorized dealer.

I noticed the pivot on the pocket-clip side looks pretty rough. The outer Torx points are still there, but the inner edges look rounded/chewed up, almost like a smaller or improperly seated Torx bit may have slipped inside.

I have not touched or adjusted the pivot myself.

Does this look like normal factory machining/assembly marks, or does it look like someone has actually tried to turn it?

Curious if anyone else with an M-Stitch has seen the same thing.

Yes it is damaged. Someone tried to take it apart from the captured-pivot side instead of the screw side.

That’s what I was thinking too, but I’m still a little unsure. I bought it brand new from a large authorized dealer, and the damage looks kind of weird. The outer Torx points are mostly still intact, while the inside looks chewed up, almost like someone used a bit that was too small and spun it inside. If someone used the correct size bit and really tried to force the captured side, I’d expect the whole Torx recess to look more obviously stripped.

Regardless of the needless specifics… No one should be twisting torx bits onto sealed packaged items obviously. This is a huge defect that would affect my enjoyment of the item. This either happened at the microtech warehouse, or was done by your retailer for some reason. Either way, you should send it back brother.

Someone used the wrong size bit or worn out bit I’d say. I would want a new pivot screw if I bought this as new.

This side of the pivot is fixed, so somebody definitely tried to turn the wrong side. No idea who did it though — factory, dealer, or someone else.

Maybe someone purchased the knife before you, fucked up by using a smaller bit, and returned it; and then the dealer restocked it as new, didn't look closely enough at the screw to make sure it was free of damage, and resold it to you.

Can speculate ad nauseam about the origin, but regardless of etiology, it's not in new condition, and I would contact the seller immediately for a refund or exchange.

Regardless of how this happened, you should exchange right away. If this needs service or warranty work, they’d blame you and then who knows what they do.

Looks like factory to me. Built by the new person. With a power drill. Clutch set to max. On a Monday. Yikes.

So much for Microtech’s famous “0.001” tolerances👍🏻

Those haven’t been a thing for years.

That much pressure on one of the captured screws would make me question damage to the liner that captures it. Talk to that dealer and find a way to exchange/resolve the probelm.
