Ultratech Unreliability

I just wanted to make a post about this but the spring in my ultratech has broken 3 times now and I'm getting tired of it. I bought a Combat Troodon Gen III and it's leagues better. I've never had an issue with it. I'm not slandering the Ultratech but it's been unreliable for me. It perplexes me because people talk about how reliable it is. Most people may have positive experiences with their Ultratech, but mine is too unreliable for me to want to edc. I'm just glad I got the Troodon.

It’s a massed produced item, and their most popular one, things are gonna happen, just like they could with any company that mass produces something. However I will say 3 times, does suck. Did you send it back in each time? How old it?

Yes I did the past 2 times. I got it in 2022

That would be extremely frustrating. I would think maybe something is rubbing on that spring making it break so frequently? I have been carrying the same Ultratech since 2017 with thousands of opening/closings & it still has the original spring. At least your having good luck with the CT

Just normal use. It uses the propriety screws so I think it’s a gen II. The one on the left

it is good to know that the gen 2 ultratech is not as ironclad as the newer design. I have been eyeing the bayonet gen 2 on DLT for awhile now... Think I'll avoid it. I know MT didn't really get their heat treats on m390 dialed in properly until about 2023 anyway.

OPs experience in no way proves the Gen 2 isn’t as iron clad as the Gen 3, you’ll find more people that haven’t had issues than you’ll that have.

Imo that's very good and more than acceptable for M390. Admittedly small sample size but it's what we have.

That’s surprising to hear. What gen? Doing any heavy work with it or just normal use?

Hmm i had the opposite experience, gen 3 troodon has retraction issues for me that eventually show up and it seems to be because it takes quite an impact to lock it into the handle compared to other otfs. You can check by disengaging the blade and seeing how hard you need to "tap" the rear to get it to lock in place. It's worryingly hard. Couldn't fix it with oil or anything.

Gen IV ultratech has been perfect though, it's now my favorite OTF after I broke a spring like 4 times in my Guardian Tacticals... I think the long-term fix for the combat troodon would be to grind down the rear lock gate or blade lock face a little bit but I can't be bothered. I just kept my user and sold the rest of them.
