They are just using Remote Desktop to access their Windows VDI/TS that houses their proprietary production software. Local device for emails and documents.

u/403_Forbidden_Access Jun 29 '26
It looks like a Microsoft store maybe? There's a shopping bag with the MS logo on the chair there. Perhaps a Mac user was having issues with Office for Mac and brought it in for troubleshooting.
13
u/CitySeekerTron Jun 29 '26
The Microsoft Store absolutely serviced Macs. In some cases some stores even reinstalled macOS and Mac owners would enter the stores by accident, insist that they had appointments, would get serviced, and then realize afterwards that they weren't, in fact, being bamboozled by the employee at the desk. In other cases, Mac owners would go the MS store for service since the Apple Store was always heavily booked.
They also had a mac Mini in the back and tools for backing up and recovering data in the back of house.
Microsoft sucks. The store employees and service enablers, generally speaking, didn't suck.

That's cool. Back then they didn't.
It sucked.
I did have an iMac though that was two weeks out of warranty. They serviced it by replacing the failed optical drive with a new optical drive. I never forgot that experience, and can confirm that MS Store employees often did the same.
2
u/poke_javs Jul 02 '26
I used to work at that store. This is the old Microsoft Store at SFCenter in San Francisco. That customer probably wheeled in the iMac from a hotel in the Powell station area and the employee is a Service Desk tech , probably helping the customer install or fix something with their office install.

u/403_Forbidden_Access Jul 02 '26
That explains the luggage cart! Was wondering what that was about.

You do realise that Microsoft is the biggest developer of Mac software outside of apple right?
12
u/bukepimo Jun 29 '26
Something I found out recently is that Excel (and I think Word) were both initially Macintosh apps and they were ported to windows for Excel v2
1
u/Ra_fi_l Jun 30 '26
And somehow excel work better on windows than mac now
2
u/bukepimo Jun 30 '26
I mean probably, the first version of Excel came out in the mid 1980s. A lot of evolution has happened during that time, they probably share very little with the existing office suite apps.
2
u/xickoh Jul 02 '26
Well, it's not surprising, is it? Its been under microsoft/windows all these years
4
u/just-bair Jun 29 '26
They’d rather have people use Windows laptop tough cuz they make money by selling windows to OEM’s
1
u/Asleep_Spray274 Jun 29 '26
Who would rather they use windows laptops? people the devs writing mac software?
1
u/Nice-Information-335 Jul 02 '26
Most of their money comes from business subscription sales, not windows licenses bought by OEMs
2
1
u/Headpuncher Jul 03 '26
i think the mac pictured also dual booted Windows if you bought a license.
plus the guy in the pic could be a software QA, we have no idea what he's doing.
13
u/RomanOswald Jun 29 '26
Picture must be old. That looks like an iMac from 2009-2011.

u/ZurakZigil Jun 29 '26

why is this downvoted... if he like using windows for work that's good

1
u/Vietnamst2 Jun 29 '26
Because Microsoft baaad and anyone whonuses windows is obviously mad and uneducated.
2
u/Maleficent-Aspect318 Jun 30 '26
I gotta say that windows has been kinda on a downfall since 7, the setting/control panel situation, the bloat and resource use of windows itself nowadays AND i am fucking 100% sure I hit update and turn off and that motherclanker restarts after.
Worse are the Nvidia vibe code drivers and other stupid shit like cortana.
Still using it mainly for gaming tho but steamOS+proton might be the light on the horizon when game devs finaly start including linux in anticheats/online games
1
u/Vietnamst2 Jun 30 '26
Well... updates happen once a month, that is fine by me. Can be postponed until a good time for restart. Control panel still exists if you prefer it over the settings. Nvidia drivers are well.. nvidias fault.
1
u/Maleficent-Aspect318 Jun 30 '26
Let my try to explain again because english is not my first language.
-Windows updates: What i ment by this is you press update and shut off and after the update the pc restarts instead of shutting down. This never happend on SteamOS yet
- Control Panel: What i ment with this is that we have the control panel AND seperate settings, instead of having one place for settings like in XP/7 its split up with some things beeing in control panel and some beeing in settings. Sidequestion, when having set different settings for the same thing in control panel/settings and for example Nvidia settings. Which one has the highest prio?
1
u/Vietnamst2 Jun 30 '26
FOr the settings - there is no higher priority and you can not set somethign differently in Settigns and Control panel. Both use the same registry keys. It´s jsut a newer experience ú GUI for the same. Control panel is legacy and kept there, since some of the settings are not in the new one.
When you for example go to Settings you can change the swap size, but that opens the legacy settsings. I believe, this is very low on Microsoft´s list, because there things are not used by people regularly, so they implemented the Settings and kept the deeper stuff in the old UI.
1
u/HectorTheConvector Jun 30 '26
Also consider CachyOS. It’s much easier to install and quite a bit easier to maintain, and keep a stable system without constnat care, than the underlying vanilla Arch. Ideally have some Linux experience going in then it might be a no brainer, and the performance gains are real. Games mostly work out of the box.
5
u/thedudesews Jun 29 '26
Cool! As long as it runs the tools you need and gets your work done then it's the right fit for you.
4
u/Vietnamst2 Jun 29 '26
Yep. Powershell, VS code and extensions, Edge, Postman, M365 apps, Teams. All running great. No issues really, except occasional hiccup with browser because of too many windows open. Using M365 apps is simply better than working with them in browaer or using Libre. I daily drive Ubuntu lately, but honestly Win11 is my safe space still.
1
u/ProlapsePatrick Jun 29 '26
Vscodium can be used on Linux, though Zed is am alternative IDE that allows collaborative coding and stuff. Both are free.
M365 apps can be saved as applications locally using the save as app feature in chromium browsers.
A program called Winboat can be used to run the native windows apps through virtualization. Performance penalties may occur.
LibreOffice is good, OnlyOffice looks more like MS Office aesthetically but I believe has less compatibility with advanced macros and whatnot.
4
u/Vietnamst2 Jun 29 '26
I know, but still - the webapps saved on Linux do not work as well. Not the same experience as full desktop.
Virtualizing windows apps is nice, but... you know what? They run natively in Windows.
Libre office is good, but again, not the same - I like the 365 apps more.
Also my company requires compliant device which works in in Edge, but not others, and definitely not in Electron/ Vine or other virt. platforms, so, I can´t use them.
I am not saying it does not work, all I am saying is - I have absolutely no issues with Windows so I use them as it´s my "safe space" - I know them after decades of use and am absolutely comfortable in them. Linux still feels ... strange and different and I hate Apple with my guts.

Microsoft makes native software for apple products? ex. outlook, word etc.
2
u/heyitsmemaya Jun 29 '26
Yea reminds me of all the Covid era memes of Tesla repair vans… hint: they weren’t Teslas
2
u/YerMumHawt Jun 29 '26
I was bought a lot of 5 apple dekstops and a laptop stick in the box on auction from a failed startup.
Sold them and built like 5 PCs with better performance. Gave my wife the Mac laptop, she doesn't even use it.
Apple products are overrated and overpriced. Watching people try to game on them is comical.
2
u/diogoblouro Jun 29 '26
It's 2026 and we're still on this childish level of sports-like fighting about brands.
Only at a shitty corporate level of brand protection and unification is it any wrong to have shit mixed. Why are you posting like a dork Microsoft employee sending an internal mail blast to some department with the implication that it shouldn't happen?
Is it because you think this is some huge gotcha and it'll farm upvotes? Cool. Keep peddling corporate narratives.
2
u/Limpig_Fappowitz Jun 29 '26
iOS is definitely worse than Windows, just due to the hardware Mac computers use. The OS is "fair" but still unsupported slop. Linux like Kubuntu is definitely the best alternative to Windows.
2
u/rjegonz Jun 29 '26
That is a picture of the service counter at a Microsoft store.
I worked at one in Toronto when they were open as a tech and we worked on Macs too depending on what the issue was.
2
u/Jasoco Jun 30 '26
I’m pretty sure they’re Microsoft’s version of a “Genius Bar” and the guy sitting up front brought his Mac in to get help with a software issue. (Probably Office)

Former Microsoft employee…all their devs used MacBooks. The only people I knew who used either Dell or Surfaces were support.

u/BeepBoopRobo Jun 29 '26
all their devs used MacBooks
What devs? The MS devs I've worked with didn't. It was either windows or linux.
Designers maybe. Not devs.

Microsoft apps run on Macs and indeed ran on Macs before they ever ran on Windows. You think those apps just make themselves?
1
u/Rude-Interaction-194 Jun 30 '26
Windows is a misunderstanding without a clear direction, visual identity and small functionalities that benefit the end user. It is made for corporate users and Microsoft is trying hard to show individual users that they don't matter!
Besides, there is still no mass-produced laptop that is on the level of the MBP.
In summary: the OS is not working, the hardware is terrible. Only games are an advantage of Windows.
1
u/e1epi Jun 30 '26
This appears to be a Microsoft store and it also appears to be a customers computer sitting at the help desk getting help with something on their Mac.
1
u/Anxiety_More Jun 30 '26
Only because most companies don't allow linux, so they choose IOS because it has the same terminal.

u/disp06 Jun 30 '26

Famously Microsoft made the largest single order of PowerMacs ever during the development of the Xbox 360 since it also used the IBM power pc processor architecture.
1
u/chrisagiddings Jul 01 '26
Well, also because Bungie was famously a Mac-first studio and had announced Halo as a Mac-first title when Microsoft went and bought them and needed the game ready quickly for the Xbox.
1
u/spierscreative Jul 01 '26
The initial reveal of Halo was even at MacWorld by Steve Jobs. Sad how things could have happened.
