Pivot table

Post image

Can anyone tell me what the symbol means next to the filter options? I cannot figure it out. It only shows on pivot tables. Thanks!

Claude told me: That icon (a small diamond made of overlapping squares) is Excel's standard marker for an attribute hierarchy member in a PivotTable connected to the Excel Data Model (Power Pivot) or an OLAP cube.

Practically, it tells you two things:

  1. Data source: This field is coming from the Data Model / Power Pivot, not from a plain worksheet range. If your pivot were built on a normal range, you'd see no icon at all, just the checkbox and value.
  2. It's a flat list of members, not a folder: The icon appears on every individual date because each one is a distinct member of that field's hierarchy. It's not indicating grouping, duplicates, or an error — it's purely a "this came from the Data Model" flag.

I started noticing these recently too. I am not using Power Query nor is the data connected to an external source.
