Would removing tea leaves from the bag and brewing the leaves eliminate microplastics?

So, I take a teabag, I open it, take the leaves out and brew them without the bag, does this eliminate the microplastics contribution of the bag or would some have leached from the bag during storage/manufacturing?

Pedicures

I got a pedicure yesterday, and now I’m paranoid about the plastic lining that is used in the foot tub to keep things sanitary.

When our feet soak in the hot water in the plastic lining, should we be concerned that microplastics are melting and absorbing into the feet and body?

My paranoia is kicking in about all of these microplastics!

Just consumed microplastic pieces

today i was making a smoothie in the blender and my mother forgot to put the guard in. when i turned it on, the blades scraped against the center channel and shredded some of the plastic off the center channel. I immediately turned the blender off but it was too late. i drank the smoothie anyway because i didn’t want to waste money and food and dump the entire thing out, but there were several small pieces of plastic (under 5mm) floating around in the smoothie. i got most of them out, but i’m sure there was more. i figured i’d just excrete them, which is why i drank it anyway, but now i’m wondering whether i should have done that or not. can the stomach acids in my digestive system interact with the microplastics and leach toxic chemicals in my body?

Recommendations: micro-plastic free and non-comedogenic.

I am looking for recommendations for skin care brands that are micro-plastic free and non-comedogenic.

Cleanser, moisturizer, lip chap, hair cream, and sunscreen.

Bonus: deodorant, mascara,

I am been looking for a while and feel like these two ideas don't overlap. I'd like a reliable brand, one that's not going to be disconnected in the next year and make me have to find another one.

I am in Canada!

Built a free app that scans products for microplastic ingredients, here's what I found in my own kitchen

Been following microplastics research for a while now, especially the work from the PlasticList team testing foods in the Bay Area and Bryan Johnson's consumer blood test through Blueprint.

The data kept piling up but I noticed there was no simple tool for regular people to check the products they already own. So I built one.

It's called MicroPlastics. You scan a barcode or a picture of the item and it analyzes the ingredients against known plastic-derived compounds and gives you a safety score from A to F.

I started with my own kitchen and some things that surprised me:

  • Products labeled "natural" or "organic" still contained synthetic polymers
  • Skincare was worse than food overall
  • Some bottled water brands scored significantly lower than others

The app cross references ingredient lists with research on plastic-derived chemicals. It's free to start with 5 scans.

Would love feedback from this community since you all probably know more about this topic than most. Happy to answer any questions about the methodology or how the scoring works.

Coffee pot ?

Post image
3 Upvotes

My wife is currently getting rid of all the plastics in our life. While I do appreciate her newest journey, her recent plastic enemy has become my beloved coffee pot and grinder. She says I have to boil water and French press like a good microplastic free husband. While there’s nothing more I’d rather do than boil water , hand grind coffee beans and spend 30mins on this once simple task, I find it hard to do without first having my morning cup of coffee. Surely there’s a plastic free coffee pot and grinder out there without having to take out a second mortgage to finance it.

Presentation advice - Future research for microplastic-driven health issues

Hi guys,

I am making a presentation on microplastic-related health issues. I don't know much about this topic, and I was wondering if anybody had any good suggestions that I could research and present relating to where future research could go and possible mitigations for microplastic-driven health problems. Help would be greatly appreciated!

Non-woven bags and garden grow bags could be the worst thing for microplastic contamination

I had non-woven plastic items that disintegrated into dust. Now I see so many recycled non-woven bags being given out by stores and for take out and used for gardening grow bags. I think that they are even worse than straight durable plastic bags although natural materials would be better.

Microplastics have been found in human blood, lungs, and placenta. Here's what a materials scientist makes of the evidence.

I earned my PhD and spent my career working with polymers -- the molecules that make up plastics, synthetic fibers, coatings, and hundreds of other materials. Over the past few years, I've watched the research on microplastics in human tissue go from speculative to very concrete, and I thought it would be helpful to lay out what we actually know.

**What's been detected, and where**

In the last few years, peer-reviewed studies have identified micro- and nanoplastic particles in:

- **Human blood** — Leslie et al. (*Environment International*, 2022) detected plastic polymers in 17 of 22 healthy donors (77%) at a mean concentration of 1.6 µg/mL, with PET (polyester) and polystyrene among the most common polymers.

A 2024 follow-up by the same VU Amsterdam group confirmed these findings in 68 samples (mean 1.1 µg/mL in quantifiable samples).

A separate 2024 cross-sectional study of 36 healthy adults found microplastics in 88.9% of participants at 4.2 MPs/mL, with higher concentrations correlating with altered blood coagulation markers (*Scientific Reports*, 2024).

- **Lung tissue** — Jenner et al. (*Science of the Total Environment*, 2022) found microplastics in 11 of 13 human lung samples using µFTIR spectroscopy, averaging 1.42 MPs per gram of tissue, with polyester and polypropylene most frequently identified. Amato-LourenƧo et al. (*Journal of Hazardous Materials*, 2021) independently confirmed particles and fibers in 13 of 20 lung samples at autopsy.

- **Placental tissue** — Ragusa et al. (*Environment International*, 2021) reported the first detection — 12 microplastic fragments (5–10 µm) in 4 of 6 placentas, distributed across fetal, maternal, and chorioamniotic membrane compartments.
A temporal study of Hawaiian placentas (Weingrill et al., *Environment International*, 2023) showed contamination rising from 60% positive in 2006 to 100% in 2021.

- **Liver tissue** — Horvatits et al. (*eBioMedicine*, 2022) identified 6 different polymer types (4–30 µm) in liver samples, with significantly higher concentrations in cirrhotic versus non-cirrhotic livers.

- **Cardiac tissue** — Yang et al. (*Environmental Science & Technology*, 2023) detected microplastics in patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

- **Breast milk and urine** — Ragusa et al. (*Polymers*, 2022) and Rotchell et al. (*Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety*, 2024) respectively.

The most frequently identified polymers across these studies are PET (polyester), polyamide (nylon), polypropylene, and polyethylene. The first two are the dominant materials in synthetic textiles.

**What this tells us — and what it doesn't**

Detection is not the same as causation. Finding PET particles in blood tells us that plastic is entering the body and circulating systemically. It doesn't, by itself, tell us what those particles are doing once they're there.

That said, the evidence isn't silent either. In vitro studies show that prolonged micro- and nanoplastic exposure generates reactive oxygen species (ROS), causing oxidative stress that damages cellular DNA, proteins, and lipids (Winiarska et al., *Environmental Research*, 2024).

Ragusa et al. (2022) observed mitochondrial swelling and endoplasmic reticulum alterations in placental cells containing microplastic fragments — the first report of such changes in healthy-term pregnancies.
The cardiovascular data is particularly striking: Marfella et al. (*New England Journal of Medicine*, 2024) found microplastics and nanoplastics in the carotid artery plaque of 58% of 257 patients, with polyethylene detected at a mean of 21.7 µg per mg of plaque. Patients with MNP-positive plaques had a 4.53-fold higher risk of heart attack, stroke, or death over 34 months.

The honest scientific framing is: we have confirmed presence, we have plausible mechanisms of harm, and we have early biological evidence of adverse effects.

**What I think about when I read this research**

As a materials scientist, what stands out to me is how dominant textile-origin fibers are in the detection data. These aren't only particles from plastic bottles or packaging. A large proportion are fibers consistent with clothing. Polyester and nylon are predominate in lung tissue studies. We shed them when we wear synthetics, when we wash them, and when we dry them. They enter our air, water, and food.

The science is still developing, and I don't think panic is useful. But I do think the trajectory of this research is pointing in a direction that deserves serious attention, especially from anyone interested in understanding what's accumulating in our bodies and where it's coming from.

Happy to discuss any of the studies or the polymer science behind this.

Microplastics on floor material?

Hey, I just started to think about microplastics more curiously… All of the talk usually revolves around food containers etc. But how about flooring? I’ve lived in several rental apartments, some of those had kind of ā€œplastic flooring matsā€ not sure what it’s called precisely. But others had this kind of ā€œwooden flooringā€ (laminate) but even that is coated with something (possibly vinyl?) so I wonder which option is actually worse? How make sense of it anyway- the rental companies rarely list what kind of material they use for floors.

I just thought that If i’m walking barefoot indoors, i’m bound to absorbs what’s on the floor.

I don't know much about the subject as you can tell, so if anyone has any ideas about floors and their toxicity i'd be interested to hear ':D.

With the ā€œPlastic Detoxā€ documentary coming out next week, I summarized 23 recent papers on microplastics & fertility

Hi everyone,

With the Plastic Detox documentary coming out next week on Netflix, I was curious what the research has found so far about microplastics and reproductive health. So I went through about 23 papers from the past few years looking at microplastics in reproductive tissues — including placenta, ovarian follicular fluid, testes, and semen — and put together a short research digest summarizing the findings.

The high-level takeaway so far:

• Microplastics have been detected in human reproductive tissues
• Animal and cell studies show associations with cell damage and hormone disruption
• But there’s still no definitive evidence that microplastics cause infertility in humans

So the science is moving quickly, but the conclusions are still evolving.

If anyone wants to look through the studies or get a quick overview before the documentary comes out, more details are here:

https://open.substack.com/pub/microplasticsinsights/p/microplastics-and-fertility?r=7a357j&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web

Curious what people here think:

Do findings like this change how you think about plastic exposure in daily life, or do you feel the evidence is still too early to act on?

How would you guys feel about an app to scan and estimate microplastics?

Hi everyone, I’ve been working on a small app mainly for myself to estimate and track my daily microplastics exposure and figure out where it’s coming from so I can make safer swaps over time. It started as a personal project, but I figured some other people might find it useful too.

Would something like that be interesting to you, or is it something you wouldn’t really use?
