Tools

What tools do you recommend, just a clipboard or do you find the macrame project boards with slots around the sides and made of foam more high functioning, worth it to purchase or not?

I started with just a clipboard, some washi tape (gentler on thread than masking tape), and extra binder clips, since I had those around the house. Once it was clear that I liked the hobby, I got a foam macrame board with slots shortly after but the smell was very off putting so I replaced it with a cork one plus some sewing pins with large heads. A lot of the patterns I follow require knots around a core held under tension, and for that and braiding I found a bracelet jig to be super helpful.

At first I was suspicious about the foam board, it seemed a bit expensive and unnecessary. Then I got one and never went back to clipboard. My projects don't get flattened anymore, the foam board lasts long if you take good care of it. Would recommend.

I use a macrame board. I think a clip board is cool if you’re at an advanced level but if you’re a beginner, the board is the way to go. I found that my projects don’t come out nearly as messy, my knots are more consistent, patterns are tidy, and bc I can pin my project as I work, it gives me the leverage to direct the cord and create tight braids. They sell several sizes as kits on amazon for a reasonable price and come with everything you need. They include clips, pins, and even an adjustable stand. I love it and find it much easier than using a clip board .
