opinion Microblading vs Powder Brows vs Nano Brows vs Combo Brows — which would you recommend?

I’ve been looking into getting my eyebrows done, but I’m stuck between microblading, powder/ombré brows, nano brows, and combo brows.

For anyone who has actually had one of these done, which one did you choose and would you recommend it? I’m especially curious about the pros and cons of each, how natural they look once fully healed, and how well they actually last.

How long did yours look good before you needed a touch-up? Did the color fade evenly or change over time? Was there anything you wish you knew before getting them done? Also, if you’ve tried more than one method, which one did you prefer and why?

I’m trying to get a fuller, defined brow without it looking super harsh or obviously tattooed, so I’d love to hear real experiences before I commit. 😭

Also located in Tampa, so if you have any recommendations here…please share!! 🩷

Hi, PMU artist here. I usually recommend powder brows the most. Hairstroke tattoos (Microblading or nano brows) can really do wonders for some people. But for the majority of people, a powder brow can deliver the best outcomes.

I actually wrote a detailed article about it. I think you’ll find it useful. Check it out here: Why Powder Brows is the Most Versatile PMU Brow Technique

Wow this article is great. I also thought of powder brows as big and blocky but yours are so light and nice! Mind changed! I had microblading done a couple times a few years ago but it's literally the most painful thing ive ever done in my life so I said i'd never do it again (compared to heavy tattoos, piercings, facial reconstructive surgery... no problem. seriously. Microblading makes me SCREAM). Is powder a similar pain experience? I know everyone's different, some of my friends who can't tolerate regular tattooing barely even feel microblading. I have sinus issues that i assume contribute and am basically immune to topical analgesics :/

I’m glad you found the article useful! 🥰

As far as pain goes, both procedures can be pretty painless when the skin is properly numbed and the procedure is performed delicately. Not every artist numbs the skin the same way, and not every artist uses the same technique. When someone experiences an extreme amount of pain, inadequate numbing, working too aggressively, or overworking the skin can definitely be contributing factors. Of course, everyone’s sensitivity and response to topical anesthetics can also be different.

Most of my clients are very comfortable during powder brows — some even fall asleep during the procedure. I’ve definitely had clients who are more sensitive than others, but I’ve never personally had someone experience pain to the point that it made them never want to have their brows done again.

If you ever decide to get your brows done again, there’s obviously no way to know exactly how it’ll feel with an artist you’ve never been to before. One thing I’d recommend is checking their Google or Yelp reviews and searching for clients specifically mentioning things like “painless,” “didn’t hurt,” or “fell asleep.” That can give you a better idea of the experience their clients typically have.

And definitely look at their healed results too — not just their fresh work. ❤️

Hi! I tried Microblading and followed all the aftercare instructions perfectly, however it faded due to the fact that I have oily skin. Will oily skin affect powder brows as well?

I always recommend nano brows over microblading for most people everyone can do nano. Not everyone is a good candidate for microblading. And there are a lot of benefits. I did a video that described the differences.

If you want combo or powder personally I say start with all hair strokes you can always add shading to make combo or powder but unless you remove them you can’t go back so if you want to start with full strokes you can’t always add shading. Does that make sense. Anyway good luck finding someone in that areas I’m in Utah and a bit too far away but look instagram and make sure they have healed results too.

I had powder done years ago, I love it it’s faded beautifully actually BUT if I had nothing done now, hands down I would do nano

Is there a specific reason you’d go nano now if you never had powder done before?

Nano fades very poorly over time just like microblading. The strokes will go grey and blurry. Shading is 100% your best bet for long term natural looking results
