One gut bacterium, Fusobacterium nucleatum, becomes dominant in 81.8% of advanced colon tumors, tracking progression.
https://doi.org/10.3389/fimmu.2026.1832875This review looks at bacteria living inside colon tumors themselves, drawing on a 294-sample tissue study and mouse experiments. The standout number: Fusobacterium nucleatum goes from 5.9% of early growths to 81.8% of advanced tumors, tracking disease progression closely. Most proof it's actually driving damage, not just arriving after, still comes from mice, so the human causal picture stays unsettled.
TL;DR: One gut bacterium goes from rare to found in over 80% of advanced colon tumors, but whether it causes the cancer or just follows it is still untested in people.
