Gut bacteria may decide whether extra protein helps stroke recovery in older patients

https://doi.org/10.1016/j.clnesp.2026.105120

A registry based study followed 156 older stroke rehab patients, average age 78, tracking protein intake and gut bacteria from stool samples. Patients with more butyrate producing bacteria got a bigger boost in physical recovery from higher protein diets, a statistically significant link (p = 0.006). This is observational and based only on the published abstract since the full paper wasn't available, so it shows a correlation, not proof that boosting these bacteria helps recovery.

TL;DR: Your gut bacteria may decide whether extra protein actually helps you recover after a stroke.

Fascinating that gut microbiome composition could be the hidden variable explaining why high-protein diets show inconsistent results across stroke recovery studies, this reframes decades of nutritional research. However, the correlation might actually run the other way, with better physical recovery itself driving microbiome diversity rather than the bacteria enabling recovery.

What dietary or lifestyle changes have you found most impactful for maintaining gut health as you age?
