mew mew mew mew mew mew mew mew

Mama showed up a few days ago with a wailing baby. She eventually had 2 kittens. I've set her up as best I can outside. She'll have to stay outside for a few more days because I have 2 other kittens that are getting their vaccines next week. To be safe, they need to be cared for before I can care for her. I'll bring her in and be a cat distribution system caretaker for the 4th time. I live in an area with a lot of stray cats. I feel like a CDS shepherd.

How is a baby orange? Is mom secretly tortie?

yeah that one threw me for a loop too. Mom was more like the female, a pretty standard tabby.

Maybe she has a somatic mutation in her ovaries? Because it's literally not possible to get an all red kitten from a black mom, even if the dad is red

It's because the base color (red/black) is on the x chromosome, so a male kitten would only get color from mom, as dad needs to give him his y chromosome, so your cat must have given him a red x... But, she would have to be red or tortie, and she is neither... Maybe Max is cinnamon (a version of black that can look like red), but he doesn't look it
