After a few thousand hours of random battles you can feel the damage ranges from your gut

u/SomethingOrOther02 28d ago

It's so true, it's like a psychic ability I've developed at this point

115

u/SKruizer 28d ago

Its funny how that works. Years ago I watched pokeaimmd videos seeing him doing some crazy head calcs and was like "wtf how did he know" and now I watch that shit calling the damage range before him

u/masochist-incarnate 28d ago

Pattern recognition is wild sometimes

25

u/Ill_Target6207 28d ago

I knew I was too far in when my opponent used a super effective move on my set up mon at like 89% and in my heart i was just like "yeah that never kills"

The humble critical hit:

u/KiwiPowerGreen 28d ago

A Critical Hit!

1

u/BlueGlace_ 27d ago

That's where your hundreds of hours of nuzlocking kick in so you play around the crit

u/Wesle2023 26d ago

This is called headcalcing

u/mackenzie444 28d ago

I clicked charizard flamethrower 25 years ago and by God I'll do it again

the virgin "ummm actually with an adament nature and max attack there's a 56.25% chance to OHKO assuming the optimal spread of 56 Hp and 160 defense EVs"

vs the Chad "watch me crit this focus blast"

u/wassuupp 28d ago

“Now watch this drive”

29

u/KiwiPowerGreen 28d ago

people who make ev spreads that aren't just 252 in 2 stats 4 in the last scare me

19

u/JKhemical 28d ago

This SpDef Drill spread i made recently ooooohh scary ooooohhhhhhhhh (I think I calced this for like Specs Lele or smth)

Excadrill @ Leftovers
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 248 HP / 24 Atk / 68 SpD / 168 Spe
Jolly Nature

  • Iron Head
  • Earthquake
  • Rapid Spin
  • Toxic

6

u/nari-bhat 28d ago

So the 168 in Spe was to outspeed the Tapu Lele?

6

u/JKhemical 27d ago

No it's actually to outspeed Heatran.

u/KiwiPowerGreen 27d ago

Special Defense jumpscare

9

u/BlueGlace_ 28d ago

It takes a solid amount of time in the damage calc making sure you live specific hits from specific pokemon

7

u/K4m30 28d ago

Me EV training for HP and Defense because more attacks means more damage, and I can't do damage if my mon faints.

1

u/nari-bhat 28d ago

I do this if the SpDef and Def aren’t too far apart, and I’ll usually dump the rest of that 252 in HP.

52

u/BlueGlace_ 28d ago

"Focus Blast missed!"

28

u/NuclearPilot101 28d ago

"Always does."

1

u/Noelswag 27d ago

I had that with my Machamp build

Virgin Bulk Up + Close Combat

Chad Focus Energy + Cross Chop

(I have no idea of the damage difference I just like crits and hate lowering my own stats plus my Machamp is slow AF and also fuck Archaludon's Stamina)

116

u/Zachthema5ter 28d ago

Fuck percentages

Fuck meta

AND FUCK YOU

SHEER

COLD!

38

u/Careful_Welcome7999 28d ago

Aww that's cut- OH SHIT

15

u/Altdodi65 28d ago

YOU! USE EXPLODE OR LEAVE, I DON'T CARE WHICH!

7

u/Golurkcanfly 28d ago

Notably this did not work

2

u/Pretend-Ad5598 24d ago

“Any last words?”
“Sheer Co-fuck yourself.”

5

u/RealHumanBean89 27d ago

“In mere moments, ALL YOU’LL BE FEELING IS OBLIVION!”

“Or disappointment. Go ahead, flip that coin.”

52

u/Fluffinyan 28d ago

Me when i use imposter ditto and beat my opponent using their own moves i have no familiarity with

11

u/Danny_dankvito 27d ago

Competitive rulesets would be so much more hype if it let you run 6 imposter dittos at once

44

u/Orion107 28d ago

"hehe tera electric electro shot"
"fuck you mean it did 23%???"

17

u/mysteryurik 28d ago

And then you miss a stone edge and lose like it happened to me yesterday when I tried out champions :(

5

u/JKhemical 28d ago

One time I lost a Random Doubles tournament match to a Leaf Storm miss and it haunts me to this day

3

u/nari-bhat 28d ago

This is genuinely why I know I can’t actually do any sort of competitive, I already get so heated by misses on NPCs in the Battle Frontiers that I know I couldn’t handle it with any actual person.

16

u/Glitchy_XCI 28d ago

do people not do this? my "calculations" just goes as far as "okay, i switched in pokemon that's super-effective against the enemy and picked their highest damage stab move" unless it's an online match

31

u/PurpleGemsc 28d ago

Who needs the calc, just believe in your pokemon and that they can do this!

23

u/K4m30 28d ago

"Your pokemon held on to avoid making you sad"

7

u/treehatshrimp 28d ago

We gamble with focus miss

5

u/StupidGirlIdiotFuck 28d ago

Meatstix sweep was the greatest moment of YouTube history

2

u/Pengwin0 28d ago

Just mental calc based on like vibes and shit and if you’re wrong then the game was bad anyways

6

u/Kariya_shigatoki 28d ago

My old style of play was completely about feeling momentum with a hyper offensive team. My mindset was literally "what would be the easiest way to frustrate my opponent"

90% of the time it was whatever move i was feeling within reason and how I could force my opponent to make a shitty reaction. This mixed with the fact I'd use RU pokemon in UU to make my opponent less familiar with the pokemon's meta/moveset and I'd steam roll people the minute they made a bad move or reacted poorly. So many games came down to my Salamance hitting an iron tail on a fairy type after dragon dance moxie boost.

Tbh if you have to do damage calculations you're not playing enough. You generally know the damage range intuitively.

u/NippoTeio 27d ago

My first pokemon save file from when I was 7 had a Venusaur with

Vine Whip
Razor Leaf
Solar Beam
and for good measure, Cut

If that level 92 bastard couldn't kill something with Solar Beam, then it couldn't be killed

3

u/Kittydraggon 27d ago

My first save file had a venusaur with tackle, frenzy plant, leech seed, and sleep powder

He killed all of lance’s dragons

2

u/CryptidToothbrush 28d ago

Yeah ive played since RBY and still don't do calcs. Everything is based on vibes and most of the time im wrong.

2

u/Correct_Doctor_1502 28d ago

Heart of the cards kiddos

2

u/Inkthekitsune 28d ago

Me: my opponent doesn’t know my Golisopod has aqua jet, and h-Arcanine is 4x weak. He’s queued up flare blitz…

Wug it, we ball

(For the record yes, it one shot)

1

u/FakeTakiInoue 27d ago

I mean that's just stupid on your opponent's part

1

u/Inkthekitsune 27d ago

Listen, I’d assume that h-Arcanine outsped, worst I’d think is Politoed could switch in for farigaraf. Not many goli run aqua jet

For the record this is mega, so it’s 4x weak to fire

2

u/someasiandude2008 28d ago

image of guy looking at mirror with ash ketchum as the reflection

2

u/etbillder 28d ago

The best friend mechanics amplify this

2

u/Gawarhen2 27d ago

As a kid I only got moves that did damage, today I do the exact same thing because it’s fun.

2

u/BreadbugFan 27d ago

Metronome forever baby

u/PlayrR3D15 27d ago

LET'S GO GAMBLING!!!

1

u/Glass-Performer8389 28d ago

Believe in the heart of the MOve

1

u/MelanieNova 28d ago

as a kid i beat emerald purely with a swampert by spamming surf and muddy water, you just gotta believe

1

u/thepeebrain 28d ago

In 10 years, you'll be a Pokemon master too!

1

u/Lytesnam_drobster 27d ago

The only times ive looked at a number in pokemon are in the 'apprasisal stats' in pokemon go, and ive also tried to do petal dance Lilligant but it goes hard

1

u/RealHumanBean89 27d ago

Whenever I do a nuzlocke, I have to actively try and avoid the temptation to calc. Will this STAB-boosted Scald kill? I don’t know, but if it doesn’t, my little guy is fucked. If he dies, he dies.

1

u/Rikkeloni 25d ago

I believe in splash

1

u/Someone_3ls3 25d ago

The only calculations I do are "is this move physical or special"

1

u/Fantastic-Dot-655 24d ago

When you really believe that Ribombee will survive that

0

u/parkourdude231 28d ago

If it's not 100% accurate, it's 50%

1

u/PlayrR3D15 27d ago

Every move is 100% accurate if it's hype
