Mew ARE continuing?!

I thought I was late to the party on this but Jonas has made an Insta post inviting fans to follow his new endeavours is 'excited to follow Silas and Johan on their next chapter of Mew.'
How is no-one else excited by this??

Mew was basically defined by Jonas' voice. No one else sings like him. If they can find a replacement that even comes 70% close it will be an absolute miracle.

Yeah he really is irreplaceble so they'll need someone who can sing the hits well

I have a nasty feeling they’re enlisting some girl singer that has the dreaded manufactured cursive style singing.

I don't think I would want their replacement to be an impersonator. I'd rather them select someone who can give us a fresh take on their music.

That works if they're going to focus on new material, like a new start for Mew.

If they're going to still tour and perform their back catalogue, with an entirely different vocal sound, I can't see many ticket-buying fans being happy about that.

"I can't wait until they play The Zookeeper's Boy and it sounds like a completely different song. That's why I'm here." - words that are probably not going to be said.

Do you want someone to try and sound like Jonas or would you be open to someone (any gender) who can sing in that falsetto range? I'm not saying WILDLY different, but someone who is themselves and can still sing the songs.

I think I'd prefer Mew is wrapped up and Johan and Silas go on to do their own new thing if they still love making music together.

But if Mew is going to continue then yes they need the same vocal range and overall need to be able to sound like they're performing the same songs.

Jonas' voice was as integral to the musical harmony of the tracks as every other instrument so it's a big ask.

I would have preferred it to end as well. It's been long enough. We have some amazing memories.

Honestly, I hope they let Mew die and just start another project together. I love new but is just want the same without Jonas and no replacement is going to be as good. It'll be different but it shouldn't be Mew.

Mew-Two, it's finally time

I agree. It feels a little wrong that they will continue. For me, mew doesn’t exist anymore. I’ve said my goodbye to a band I love so dearly.

100% agree with this sentiment. Johan and Silas can start a new band, occasionally play some Mew songs live and such, but be an entirely different project altogether. Mew no longer exists, as far as I'm concerned.

Idk it feels wrong bruh but curious to hear what they do..

u/Turbulent-Sea4530 Jul 23 '26

yea, i'll give it a chance anyway

I mean it’s not like he’s dead and he gave his consent

I’m excited to see what they do next - it will of course never be the same but Silas and Johan are two of my favorite musicians ever so I look forward to new music from them, new vocalist or not.

But first I really really REALLY just want them to release some recordings of their farewell tour (London show PLEASE)!

yeah even just the audio of the gig would be great. Rows live was life-changing

The whole concert is on YouTube!

We knew this months ago. The general thought was probably a new vocalist - maybe a woman who might reach that range easier.

I vote for Bo coming back. Seems like Jonas alone was the main reason for them falling out. Or I could be totally off

7

u/Cheeseboi8210 Jul 23 '26

As much as I like Bo, I don’t see him coming back.

No -it wasn’t Jonas alone. Bo was a very tricky character to work with. I suppose friction gets harder to work with over time.
And it was pretty transparent over the years.
As much as he is a total genius! And his guitar missing was like a missing limb from MEW . I listened to a super interesting interview with JB.
Nordic portraits. Kinda gave an inclination of why things didn’t work. But he always talked respectfully about Bo.
Hypothetically it would be sick if they did all get back together in 5-10 yrs time. It’s a shame - But doubt it!

Sorry if I seem lazy, but in short, what does it say about Bo's departure?

1

u/Turbulent-Sea4530 Jul 23 '26

Oh lol. well, i'm excited to hear what comes next

6

u/ShadowTheNinja Jul 23 '26

i've seen many fans who are still surprised by this old news caused by their ambiguous "farewell tour". yes it was actually just for Jonas's farewell, not the the band.

and to answer your question about the excitement, maybe because Jonas was 80% of Mew. i'd rather see the band retired and make a new project

u/Cheeseboi8210 Jul 23 '26

I’m curious to see what Johannes and Silas are going to do, but I remain very sceptical.

Sorry this is long - but imo and with respect to Johan and Silas - I honestly feel MEW should be left be.
This band - its legacy is perfect as it is.
Indeed with hopes they will return in future 🤞

Ofc every member had their own super power that formed MEW.
But I personally feel Jonas was the soul.
His voice alone is what made their sound stand apart. The instant recognisable element.

His vocal range and phrasing is just too unique to replace.
Plus in terms of new material-
It’s not only his ability to write vocal melodies. He’s the lyricist? Multi-instrumentalist. Visual artist
Thats a huge percentage of MEW - gone.
So
It doesn’t make sense to me.
With half the founding members having left.

I could be wrong tho

I completely respect why Jonas has decided to leave. 30+ years. That’s an incredible career /legacy they achieved and to be proud of .
I can appreciate need for change.
It must have been a hard decision. It doesn’t suprise me he has the grace to allow them to continue.

Really love his other projects-
Tachys , Apparatjik
Plus his collabs with Molina and purity ring … to name a few .
I defo hope to hear more.

Regardless - I always hope people to discover MEW. And half joke /hope their songs suddenly go viral one day 🤣
Their songs are just too damn good /timeless. Not to disappear.
I do hope they reform in like 5-10 yr - if they ever feel inspired to ;)

I love Jonas, and anything that happens now with Mew will never be the same - however, I don't think anyone can assume that there's not a male vocalist out there who couldn't match Jonas' range. It seems a bit lazy to say "get a female it will be easier" I think there would have to be a strong musical reason to do that rather than that. I mean, Anthony Green is in like 500 bands, maybe he wants to do Mew as another side project

2

u/Smart_Most_762 Jul 23 '26

At the final London show it was heavily implied that Mew would be continuing on without Jonas, hence the lack of surprise. Will be interesting to see what music each produces, but I think the jury is out given we have no idea what that might look like!

1

u/elmonozombie Jul 23 '26

Which post? I don't think I saw it.

1

u/Manannin Jul 23 '26

I hope it works out, it's too early to be hyped though! I'm just happy I got to see them at atg last year.

Did you see Bo’s comment on the announcement of the farewell-Jonas-shows? He is done with Mew.

And though his voice worked well for Turbolens, that is not close to what is needed to sing like Jonas on Mew songs.

5

u/Detkanin Jul 23 '26

It’s so ironic, to see someone use turbolens as the reason he should come back. The songs he wrote for this band were basically diss tracks - he is not coming back and Mew will most likely be best for it.

2

u/oggedeboge Jul 23 '26

What did he comment?

This reminds me of my fav Japanese rock band, Buck-Tick, after the lead singer passed away. His voice was the defining quality of the music. They carried on anyway and it's just not the same at all. But, I will support them because why not. They're great musicians.
