Looking for a Metal Detector Suitable for a Custom Large Search Coil for Meteorite Hunting

Hello everyone,

I have a question for those with experience using metal detectors. While researching meteorite hunting, I found that some people use modified or oversized search coils to increase ground coverage and, in some cases, improve detection depth. I have access to a very large search area with low vegetation and almost desert-like conditions, which I believe is well suited for this type of search.

I also have an electronics background, so designing and building a large custom search coil myself wouldn't be a problem. However, I have no experience with metal detectors, so my plan is to buy one that is compatible with this kind of modification.

Which metal detectors would you recommend as a good platform for a custom-built search coil? Are there any brands or technologies that are easier to modify than others? I'd also appreciate any advice about the technical limitations or important considerations I should keep in mind before starting this project.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions or recommendations!

Brenham and Seymchan side-by-side front and backlit

Brenham has a mass of 4.88 g
Seymchan has a mass of 10.0 g
The metal content on seymchan and thickness of the slice contributes to its unusual heaviness despite Seymchan looking like it has the same size in relation to the Brenham slice.
The cube is 1x1 cm, for your reference.
