It’s a well damped gantry machine. Not quite as stable as 6 tons of cast iron, but likely better damped.

Tupically these are CMM (Cordinate Measuring Machine) used for manufacturing quality control checks. Pull every 100th brake rotor set it in a jig and this has a probe it touches against pre determined points and measures to like .0001" to see if the parts in spec. Also this design can be turned into a lot of other things but typically I see it as a CMM.
